Notes: [Auszug] The calculated chemical lifetime of N2O in the troposphere is in the range of 100-200 years2. Only in the stratosphere, above 15km, does the lifetime become short enough to cause a sig-nificant latitudinal gradient. At 25 km, the measured mixing ratio in high-latitude summers can be one third to ...

Notes: [Auszug] Figure 1 shows the cross-section through a rotationally sym-metric object of constant density that has a hollow interior. The object is created by rotating the figure through the horizontal axis (not shown). The gravitational potential outside the object (referred to as the 'apple' because of its ...

Notes: Summary Restriction fragment analysis was conducted to investigate the mode of inheritance of mitochondrial (mt) DNA in F1 progeny of two P. deltoides x P. deltoides, three P. deltoides x P. nigra, and two P. deltoides x P. maximowiczii controlled crosses, and in Populus x canadensis by using 16 restriction endonucleases and two heterologous probes of cloned mtDNA fragments of maize. Five restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) of mtDNA differentiated P. deltoides from P. nigra, whereas three RFLPs of mtDNA separated P. deltoides from P. maximowiczii. In all cases, F1 progeny of P. deltoides x P. nigra, and P. deltoides x P. maximowiczii, crosses had mtDNA restriction fragments of only their maternal P. deltoides parents. P. x canadensis had mtDNA restriction fragments of only P. deltoides. F1 progeny of intraspecific P. deltoides crosses also had the same mtDNA fragments as their maternal parent. The results clearly demonstrate uniparental-maternal inheritance of the mitochondrial genome in F1 interspecific hybrids of P. deltoides with P. nigra and P. maximowiczii.

Notes: Abstract This article is about a different representation of the geometry of the gravitational field, one in which the paths of test bodies play a crucial role. The primary concept is the geometry of the motion of a test body, and the relation between different such possible motions. Space-time as a Lorentzian manifold is regarded as a secondary construct, and it is shown how to construct it from the primary data. Some technical problems remain. Yang-Mills fields are defined by their holonomy in an analogous construction. I detail the development of this idea in the literature, and give a new version of the construction of a bundle and connection from holonomy data. The field equations of general relativity are discussed briefly in this context.

Notes: Abstract Atmospheric opacity values in the zenith direction are given for a wavelength of 1.1 mm (278 GHz) at the summit of Mauna Kea in the Hawaiian Islands. A total of 75 days is covered during the period 1983–1986. Observations were made on a quasi-continuous basis, with opacity measured every 20 minutes around the clock for significant periods of time. A conversion from opacity at λ=1.1 mm to the equivalent preciptable water vapor column is given from the measurements of Zammit and Ade, from which opacities at other wavelengths may be derived. The data presented here supplement those in an earlier paper covering 34 days in the fall of 1982.

Notes: Abstract It is proposed that the gravitational field can be described in an invariant way by its “holonomy set” involving paths in Minkowski space and points in the Lorentz group. The differentiable manifold of gravity does not enter as a basic object but is constructed in a manner depending on the field configuration. Thus there is no diffeomorphism symmetry in this description of gravity, nor is the topology of space-time fixed at the outset. It is therefore proposed that the “holonomy description” of gravity provides a much better starting point for the analysis of quantum gravity. Striking similarities with Yang-Mills gauge theories emerge which shed light on the problem of whether gravity is or is not a gauge theory.

Notes: Petrov-Galerkin methods have been proposed by several authors to eliminate the inaccuracies and oscillations obtained with Galerkin methods when applied to diffusion-convection problems at high Péclet numbers: the difficulty is to select the appropriate test space for a given trial space. We investigate here choices of test space which either exactly or approximately symmetrize the associated bilinear form and so retain the optimal character of the approximate solution. This is the key to high accuracy and superconvergence, and optimal recovery techniques are proposed to obtain the maximum information from the approximations. Examples are given to show how the position and thickness of boundary layers may be estimated with relatively coarse meshes.
