Description / Table of Contents:
Summary The crop contents of 360 ring-necked doves shot during the period between October 6, 1963 and April 10, 1965 were examined. The study showed no definite correlation between the weight of the crop contents and the weather conditions prevailing at that particular time, whereas it indicated a certain dependency of the quantity of the ingested food on the age of the specimens examined. The analyses of the crop contents revealed that the ring-necked dove is decidedly many-sided in its food preferences, except in periods of food scarcity as well as during the sowing and harvesting seasons. Weed species found predominently were chickweed, clover, knotgrass, camonile, vetch, ranunculus and shepherd's purse. On the other hand, berries were practically not taken at all. Fruits as well as blossoms of the copper beech, pedunculate oak, pine and the common wild cherry could be identified. Root vegetables — specifically potatoes and beets — had been taken by the doves in large quantities in the late Winter and early Spring, after they had started to decay as a result of winter frost. Cabbage leaf remains, except those of white cabbage, could be determined primarily in the crops of those animals, which had been shot in the months of December and January. Beans and peas, otherwise preferred food species of the ring-necked dove, were found only in a single specimen. On the other hand, the leaves of different grasses occurred more often — in 4% of the crops investigated. The author gave the grain portion of the crop-contents special attention. At seeding time (February to April) an even 84% of the examined crops contained grain seeds, by far mostly barley but also wheat and oats to a considerable degree. At harvest time the presence of grain could be established in 80% of the crops. Once again these were predominately barley and wheat, however no oats, but in some cases rye. Besides, the sowing of winter wheat and winter rye during the months of October and November was clearly indicated by the crop contents of the doves shot in these months. The animal fraction in the examined crops appeared to be relatively insingnificant. Grit with pebbles was to be found mainly in the months of March and April and the latter only simultaneously with the occurrence of grain seeds. The findings of seven fungus-sclerote and of oak-galls(Neuroterus sp.) may be regarded as exceptional. The evaluation of the material obtained as a result of the crop examinations the ring-necked dove as detrimental in the large majority of cases. The author considers the only responsible and effective means of the holding the populations at an economically tolerable level to be a vigorous and well organized harvest of the doves with a closed season in the months of May and June.
