    Notizen: The spontaneous Raman spectra of the chalcopyrite structure crystal CuAlS2, which is promising for nonlinear optical applications, has been investigated at 8 and 300 K. The main aim of this study is to compare the absolute spontaneous Raman scattering efficiency in CuAlS2 crystals with that of their isomorphous analog, zinc-blende structure GaP crystals, known as one of the most efficient materials for Raman amplification. Observation of a high value of absolute scattering efficiency S/L dΩ (where S is the fraction of incident power that scatters into the solid angle d Ω and L is the optical path length with S/L dΩ=9.5×10−5 cm−1 sr−1), together with relatively narrow linewidth (Γ=5.1 cm−1, full width at half maximum at room temperature and Γ=1.5 cm−1 at 8 K for the strongest Γ1 phonon mode of CuAlS2 at 314 cm−1) indicate that CuAlS2 has the highest value of the stimulated Raman gain coefficient gs/I where I is the incident laser power density. The calculated value of this gain is gs/I=2.1×10−6 cm−1/W at 300 K and 5.0×10−6 cm/W, at 8 K for 514.5 nm laser excitation, and is larger than those for the appropriate vibrational modes of various materials (including GaP, LiNbO3, Ba2NbO5O15, CS2, and H2) investigated so far. The calculations show that cw Raman oscillator operation in CuAlS2 is feasible with low power threshold of pump laser. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: By using a CuInS2xSe2(1−x)-doped glass as an intracavity saturable absorber, passive mode-locking of Nd:YAG and Nd:YAlO3 lasers is obtained. Ultrashort laser pulses are achieved with duration of 16 ps (for Nd:YAlO3 at 1.08 μm) and 36 ps (for Nd:YAG at 1.064 μm), respectively. The intensity dependent transmittance and transient absorption change measurements are performed on CuInS2xSe2(1−x)-doped glasses at 1.08 μm with the use of laser pulses of 15 ps width. The bleaching relaxation time is found to be ∼11 ps. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: CuInSe2 single crystals have been studied employing photoluminescence (PL), optical reflection (OR), optical absorption (OA) and wavelength derivative reflection (WDR) techniques at temperatures from 4.2 to 300 K. Exciton-related peaks were observed in the near-band-edge region of the PL spectra: several narrow lines, with full width at half maximum (FWHM) of about 0.3 meV, and two wider peaks (FWHM about 0.7 meV) at 1.0414 (A) and 1.0449 eV (B). The A and B peaks were also observed in the OR and OA spectra and identified as A and B free excitonic states. The narrow lines were attributed to bound exciton recombination on intrinsic defects. A third exciton resonance (C) was observed in the WDR spectra at 1.2779 eV. The crystal-field and spin-orbit splittings were derived to be 5.3 and 234.7 meV, respectively. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Prolactin is secreted from the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland in response both to suckling and to stress. We recently observed that 1-methyl-6,7-dihydroxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline (salsolinol), produced in the neurointermediate lobe of the pituitary gland, as well as in the medial basal hypothalamus, can selectively release prolactin from the anterior pituitary. Therefore, it has been proposed that salsolinol is a putative endogenous prolactin-releasing factor (PRF). Here, we report that one structural analogue of salsolinol, 1-methyl-3,4-dihydroisoquinoline (1MeDIQ), can block salsolinol-induced release of prolactin, but does not affect prolactin release in response to thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH), α-methyl-p-tyrosine (αMpT) (an inhibitor of tyrosine hydroxylase), domperidone (a D2 dopamine receptor antagonist), or 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), a precursor of serotonin). 1MeDIQ profoundly inhibited suckling-, immobilization-, as well as formalin-stress induced prolactin release without any influence on corticosterone secretion. The 1MeDIQ-induced reduction in prolactin response to immobilization stress was dose-dependent. These results suggest that salsolinol can play a pivotal role in the regulation of prolactin release induced by either physiological (suckling) or environmental (stress) stimuli.

    Notizen: Suckling-induced prolactin release is a widely studied neuroendocrine reflex, comprising a neural afferent and a humoral efferent component. The information on the brain structures involved in this reflex is fairly limited. The present studies focused on this question. The following hypothalamic interventions were made in lactating rats and the dams were tested for the suckling-induced prolactin response: (i) unilateral or (ii) bilateral frontal cuts at the level of the anterior and posterior hypothalamus; (iii) administration of 5,7-dihydroxytryptamine or (iv) 6-hydroxydopamine into the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) to destroy serotonergic and catecholaminergic innervation of the cell group, respectively; (v) lesion of the medial subdivision of the PVN; and (vi) horizontal knife cuts below the PVN. Bilateral posterior and bilateral or unilateral anterior frontal cuts caused blockade of the suckling-induced release of prolactin. Likewise, most dams receiving 5,7-dihydroxytryptamine in the PVN did not respond to the suckling stimulus. Immunocytochemistry revealed that, in those rats which did not show a rise in plasma prolactin, there were almost no serotonergic fibres and terminals in the PVN, while in dams which exhibited a response, numerous serotonergic elements were evident. 6-Hydroxydopamine treatment did not cause significant alteration in the prolactin response. Lesion of the medial, largely parvocellular subdivision of the PVN, or horizontal knife cuts below this cell group, blocked the hormone response. The findings demonstrate for the first time that: (i) interruption of the connections between the brain stem and the hypothalamus interferes with the prolactin response to the suckling stimulus; (ii) serotonergic fibres terminating in the hypothalamic PVN are involved in the mediation of the suckling stimulus; and (iii) within the PVN, neurones in the medial, largely parvocellular subdivision of the cell group take part in the transfer of the neural signal, eventually inducing prolactin release.

    Notizen: Subcutaneous (s.c.) injection of formalin into rats is frequently used as a painful stressor that produces a three-phase nociceptive response. We have shown previously that s.c. administered formalin (0.2 ml of 4% solution per 100 g body weight) unexpectedly attenuated the increase of plasma epinephrine levels in rats exposed to exteroceptive stressors (handling, immobilisation). To clarify the mechanism(s) responsible for this phenomenon, the effect of formalin applications on epinephrine plasma levels was investigated in various experimental conditions. Subcutaneous application of formalin combined with exposures of animals to an interoceptive stressor, insulin-induced hypoglycaemia, significantly attenuated the stress-induced increase in plasma epinephrine levels, whereas plasma norepinephrine levels remained highly elevated. Moreover, administration of formalin to unstressed animals also manifested signs of an attenuated epinephrine secretion. Interestingly, intraperitoneal administration of formalin did not reduce the elevated levels of plasma epinephrine. We suggest that formalin attenuates epinephrine secretion from the adrenal medulla most probably via irritation of s.c. somatosensory receptors. We hypothesise that the irritation of the primary sensory afferents fibres might reduce the activity of the sympathetic preganglionic neurones innervating adrenal medullary chromaffin cells. Further investigations are required to establish whether the observed reduction of epinephrine secretion from the adrenal medulla is controlled by either spinal or supraspinal neuronal circuits.

    Notizen: Abstract  In the following work the results of temperature dependence refractive indices measurements, thermooptical coefficients and dispersion in a wide range of temperature are presented. For measurements of refractive indices the least deviation method was employed. The measurements were carried out in the temperature region of 20–800° C for BBO crystals and 20–600° C for LBO crystals. It is revealed that the character of the refractive indices change in these crystals is different although the refractive indices of both crystals decrease while temperature increases. Whereas the temperature dependence of refractive indices in Ba B2O4 is practically linear, the same temperature dependence in LiB3O5 has more complicated character. It contains some particular features of refractive indices dispersion and thermooptical coefficients.

    Notizen: Abstract Thin polycrystalline films of CuInxGa1−x Se2 (0⩽x⩽1) were fabricated by pulsed laser evaporation. Results of measurements of the optical properties, photocurrent polarization indicatrices, and spectral dependence of the photoconversion quantum yield of In-p-CuInxGa1−x Se2 structures are discussed. A window effect in the photosensitivity has been observed, and it is concluded that it is possible to use CuInxGa1−x Se2 thin films as photoconverters of solar radiation.

    Notizen: Abstract Using crystals of the compounds CuGaS2 and AgGaS2 and solid solutions based on them, the IR reflectance spectra and the Raman spectra have been studied in polarized light. Values have been determined for the frequencies of the longitudinal and transverse optical phonons, the damping coefficients, the IR intensity, and ɛ 0, and ɛ ∞. The concentration dependences of the indicated parameters have been constructed, and the character of the behavior of the optical vibrations in the solid solutions has been established.

    Notizen: Abstract AgInSe2 thin films on glass substrates have been prepared by pulsed laser deposition. Rectifying heterojunctions with a pronounced photovoltaic effect have been fabricated for the first time by placing such films in optical contact with layered III-VI (InSe, GaSe) semiconductors. The maximum photosensitivity of such heterostructures is 10–103 V/W. It is concluded that the prepared structures can be used as wideband selective photoreceivers.
