Notes: Abstract Five infants presented with a congenital anterolateral, unilateral bowing of the tibia. The fibula was normal but a bifid homolateral great toe was seen, associated with hand malformations. Plain films and CT disclosed a short tibial duplication, with distinct corticals. We do think that this abnormality represents a new entity, and may be related to a genetic anomaly. The long term follow up of our patients shows a spontaneously favourable prognosis without any association with pseudarthrosis. The only therapeutic problem is a limb length discrepancy.

Notes: The hydrodynamics of a pilot plant multistage mixer column extractor was studied for the toluene/water physically equilibrated system. The effects of rotational speed, and continuous and dispersed phase flow rates were investigated under a variety of operating conditions. Dispersed phase axial holdup profiles, determined by a noninvasive ultrasonic method, showed a strong nonuniformity. Depending on the operating conditons, holdup profiles can change from a concave shape to a sigmoidal form with a maximum in the bottom of the column. Sauter mean diameter and drop size distribution profiles are strongly affected by rotational speed. Significant, but weaker, are the effects of continuous and dispersed phase flow rates. Continuous monitoring of the holdup profile in the proximity of flooding leads to the formulation of proper criteria for the prediction of flooding. These criteria are appropriate for models allowing for axial variation of the holdup along the contactor.

Notes: The hydrodrynamic behavior of a 1.0 × 10-1 m dia. Scheibel column packed with a material preferentially wetted by the dispersed phase has been investigated with and without mass transfer. Drop size and size distribution and dispersed phase holdup were measured as a function of flow rates, agitator speed, packing pad height, and mass transfer direction in a 24 factorial design. Flooding rates were measured and found to be dependent on the impeller position.

Notes: The transfer of acetone between the toluene phase (dispersed) and the aqueous phase (continuous) has been measured along the length of a four-stage Scheibel column packed with material preferentially wetted by the dispersed phase. (A Scheibel stage is defined as one mixing section plus one packing section.) The column concentration profiles were obtained by applying a new technique developed for this investigation.A parameter model-fitting exercise has been developed to select the most appropriate mathematical model that quantifies the extent of backmixing in the dispersed and continuous phases and evaluates the stage efficiency.Overall dispersed phase mass transfer coefficients were estimated using the drop size and holdup data presented in Part I, and these have been compared with the published correlations based on single drop mechanisms.
