Notes: Abstract Antitumoral interleukin-2 (IL-2) therapy is frequently associated with a neurotoxicity that manifests itself in neuropsychiatric disturbances and, more rarely, with neurological focal signs. With the aim of documenting the involvement of cognitive functions after IL-2 treatment, we studied 20 patients using evoked cognitive potentials (P300) and computer analysis of the EEG signal. A comparison of the tests performed before and after the subcutaneous infusion of IL-2 showed a significant lengthening in mean P300 latencies and a percentage increase in the EEG frequencies contained with the delta and theta bands, especially in the frontal regions.

Notes: Abstract Paclitaxel is the prototype of a new class of chemotherapeutic agents with an antimitotic effect that is related to its ability to interfere with the microtubule system. It causes peripheral neurological toxicity by means of its activity on the axonal microtubules. To define the clinical and neurophysiological characteristics of paclitaxel neuropathy 23 patients undergoing paclitaxel therapy at a dose of 175 mg/m2 were studied. The patients were divided into two groups, with only one group receiving pretreatment with potentially neurotoxic drugs such as cisplatin and carboplatin. The results showed a high incidence of mild neurotoxicity in both groups. Treatment was discontinued due to severe neurotoxicity in only one patient pretreated with platinum-compounds. The clinical and neurophysiological data make it possible to define paclitaxel neurotoxicity as a distal axonal neuropathy with a summatory effect in patients pretreated with cisplatin; the possible reversibility of paclitaxel neurotoxicity requires further confirmation.

Notes: Poly(ethylene terephthalate) was crystallized from the glassy state at 120 and 200°C. The structural organization of samples, after the primary and secondary crystallizations, was analyzed by density, X-rays, infrared and transport properties of dichloromethane vapor. The values of crystallinity derived with different methods do not agree, indicating that the crystallized samples cannot be considered simply biphasic. Since the fraction of the impermeable phase is much higher than the fraction of the crystalline phase, it suggested that the presence of mesomorphic form, impermeable to the vapors at low activity. With this hypothesis, the complete composition of the crystalline samples, in terms of fraction of crystalline, amorphous and mesomorphic form was derived. A value of density of the mesomorphic form of 1.39 g/cm3 was also derived.

Notes: Sorption and diffusion of dichloromethane vapor in amorphous poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) were investigated, with the aim of studying how aging phenomena, at different temperatures, influence the transport properties. It has been found that aging produces the appearance of non-Fickian behavior in the sorption curves as well as the reduction of the diffusion coefficients. Furthermore, aging at 60°C reduces the sorption of vapor at low activity, and this led to the hypothesis of the presence of ordered domains in the aged samples. In this case, the process of solvent-induced crystallization is favored, and it appears at lower activity. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Abstract. The thermal crystallization from the glassy state of different samples of Poly(ethyleneterephthalate) (PET) was investigated with different techniques, such as infrared and x-ray analysis and polarized optical microscopy. The different samples of PET were obtained by ageing the glassy PET films at room temperature and at 60 °C; the behaviour of these films was compared with that of the fresh sample, put at the crystallization temperature as soon as prepared. The temperature of crystallization was 120 °C. All the techniques, investigated to follow the crystallization phenomenon, show that the fresh sample crystallizes with longer times than the others. This result was correlated with the initial structural organization of the glassy amorphous films.
