Notes: Summary The permeability and reflection behavior of cross-linked collagen films in dilute salt solutions have been investigated by measurements of net volume flow, isotopic exchange of THO and of Ca45, and osmotic pressure. Complementary measurements of swelling, membrane resistance, membrane potential, and streaming potential are presented. Measurements were performed in the pH range of 5 to 1.5, at temperatures between 25 and 52 °C, and in the presence of KCl, 10−2 m or CaCl2, 10−3 m. Under the conditions adopted, the membrane carries a net positive charge and undergoes large changes in degree of swelling (Donnan effect) and structure (crystal → amorphous transition). The results indicate that when pH is lowered the filtration coefficientL p decreases in the crystalline state (pH 5 to 3), increases during the conformational transition (pH 3 to 2), and decreases in the amorphous state (pH〈2). It appears thatL p is affected more by such properties as structure and porosity (i.e., mechanical resistance to flow) than properties related to the charged character of the membrane. The reflection coefficient σ increases when pH is lowered until pH ∼3, and decreases upon further lowering of pH. Such behavior is described in terms of the competition between swelling (due to both the Donnan effect and the melting transition) and fixed-charge density. Values of fixed-charge density derived on the basis of a theoretical expression for σ were found to be in good agreement with independent titration data.

Notes: Abstract Solvent-induced crystallization of quenched isotactic polypropylene (iPP) films in dichloromethane, cyclohexane, carbon tetrachloride, and chloroform has been investigated. WAXD, density, and DSC measurements indicate that smectic iPP films undergo a complex rearrangement of the structure in these liquids, leading to a process of crystallization. Transport properties of the dried samples, after the solvent treatment, show that the first stage of crystallization involves, in addition to the smectic phase, a fraction of amorphous phase, while further crystallization regards only the smectic phase. The morphology of the crystallized samples has been investigated by transmission electron microscopy following permanganic etching. No change in the basic morphology is found, although local organization showing splaying and branching appears clearer in the solvent crystallized samples than in the starting smectic sample.

Notes: Abstract The drawing behavior of syndiotactic polystyrene was analyzed at different temperatures. Amorphous films were used and, depending on drawing temperature, strain-induced or thermal-induced cold crystallization was observed. This phenomenon, when present, greatly affects the drawing behavior. The dynamic-mechanical behavior of drawn samples was analyzed, and the obtained results indicate that the glass transition is affected by drawing, and that the effect depends drastically on the drawing temperature. Particularly interesting is the dynamic behavior at high temperature where the elastic modulus is weakly affected by temperature also near the melting point.

Notes: Abstract. The thermal crystallization from the glassy state of different samples of Poly(ethyleneterephthalate) (PET) was investigated with different techniques, such as infrared and x-ray analysis and polarized optical microscopy. The different samples of PET were obtained by ageing the glassy PET films at room temperature and at 60 °C; the behaviour of these films was compared with that of the fresh sample, put at the crystallization temperature as soon as prepared. The temperature of crystallization was 120 °C. All the techniques, investigated to follow the crystallization phenomenon, show that the fresh sample crystallizes with longer times than the others. This result was correlated with the initial structural organization of the glassy amorphous films.

Notes: Summary In the present paper we report the physico mechanical properties of elastomeric systems obtained vulcanizing mixtures of cis and trans polyisoprene. The presence of the trans polymer strongly affects the physical behaviour that is typical of a biphasic system, where a plastic component is segregated in the elastomeric matrix. The experimental results are reported and discussed giving particular attention to the structural features and to the general problem of the physical behaviour of elastomeric systems.

Notes: Summary Films of amorphous syndiotactic polystyrene were exposed to dichloromethane vapour at varying activity, up to a=1. Infrared analysis and wide angle X-ray scattering were used to follow the development of ordered structures, induced by the vapour. It has been found that characteristic bands in the infrared spectrum appear after activity a=0.45, whereas X-rays show that the sample is still amorphous. The appearance of the crystalline reflections occurs at higher activities and a continuous improvement up to a=1 in the X-ray pattern is observed.
