Notes: We have found that fracture of silicon wafer specimens without introduced flaws takes place with the ejection of many small particles that emit infrared radiation, which has been imaged with a sensitive CCD camera. The particles are of order micron dimensions, preventing surface-barrier separation of carriers excited by the bond breaking at cleavage. Furthermore, larger ejected particles can subsequently crack, allowing further ejection of small luminescent particles. The results show that a simple theory of spread of a pre-existing flaw can be a serious oversimplification of complex phenomena occurring at the onset of brittle cleavage. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The dependence on time t of the room temperature luminescence S(t) emitted by Si crystals cleaved in vacuum, is strongly affected by relatively low electric current densities passed through the specimen at the initiation of cleavage, even though the luminescence continues long after the cracking is complete and the current has stopped. Above approximately 30 mA cm−2, there is no further effect. An empirical expression has been obtained for S(t), having one adjustable parameter that varies with the current density. The effects do not appear to be possible unless cleaved surfaces attain temporary high temperatures, and point to the complexity of bond rupture phenomena. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Conventional treatments have not slowed down the ever expanding low back pain (LBP) problem. Traditional treatment has most probably contributed to the growth of the problem. Therefore, in a search for new solutions, ‘functional restoration’ has been devised. In connection with chronic LBP the term has been associated with a full-day program lasting from 3 to 5 weeks. it includes multidisciplinary treatment of patients in groups with intensive physical and ergonomic training, psychological pain management, back school, as well as teaching in social/work related issues. The key concepts are ‘acceptance of the pain’, ‘activity’, ‘self-responsibility’, ‘multidisciplinary’ and ‘quantitative functional evaluation (QFE)’. The latter is aimed so that the participants can feel the physical improvement, encouraging them to be able to go back to work, or at least to lead a more active life style. Several controlled studies suggest a lasting effect in terms of regaining their ability to work and improving pain behavior for a good part of disabled chronic LBP patients. However, it is noteworthy that randomized studies seemingly show poorer results than studies not employing randomized controls.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Der Bericht betrifft ein Neugeborenes mit abnormalem Wachstum des Schädels.
Notes: Summary Intermittent abnormal growth rate of the head was observed in an infant. Air studies revealed the presence of a cisterna veli interpositi with a typical connection into the cisterna venae magnae Galeni. Two months later another air study (pneumoencephalogram) revealed the lateral ventricles to be slightly larger and an increased distance between the roof of the third ventricle and the floor of the lateral ventricles with an abnormally wide distance between the lateral ventricles. No air filled the area of the previously shown cisterna veli interpositi. A transformation of the cisterna veli interpositi into a cyst was postulated and verified at surgery. The intermittency of symptoms was explained by a ball-valve type of connection between the cisterna veli interpositi and the cisterna venae magnae Galeni. The possible reason for the final obliteration of the outlet of the cisterna was discussed and also its therapy.
