Notes: The research program at the inelastic x-ray scattering beamline at the National Synchrotron Light Source is focused on the study of elementary excitations in condensed matter with total energy resolution on the order of 0.1 eV to 1.0 eV. Results from selected experiments are reported to demonstrate the capability of the beamline as well as the information that can be obtained from inelastic x-ray scattering experiments. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A polarization analyzer has been designed for soft x-ray resonant diffraction experiments at the S K edge. The Bragg angle of graphite (0001) at the S K edge is 48°, which makes it perfectly suited as polarization analyzer. Two graphite (0001) crystals (12×12×2 mm3) are mounted on small tangent-arm driven spring loaded stages with their diffraction planes in the horizontal and vertical plane for σ and π analysis of polarized x rays. The diffracted x rays are detected by small peltier cooled Si detectors with dimensions 1×12 mm2 with the longer dimension in the direction of diffraction, so that the detector can remain fixed. These two polarization analyzers and an additional detector for the directly diffracted beam are mounted on a stage, so that the polarization of the diffracted x rays can be determined just by moving the appropriate analyzer into the beam. The tangent arm and the detector allow us to scan ±50 eV around the S K edge. This setup avoids mounting of the polarization analyzer on a rotation stage, whose axis has to be aligned with the diffracted beam. The tangent-arm is driven by motorized micrometers, which are equipped with encoders to obtain an angular resolution of 0.001°. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Spin resolved resonant Raman scattering measurements in Gd metal made by exciting x-ray resonant Raman scattering with circularly polarized x rays near the LIII edge of Gd are presented. The incident photon energy was fixed at the peak of the 2p→4f quadrupolar transition, and the scattered photon was energy analyzed around the 3d→2p fluorescent energy. Asymmetry ratios in the scattered intensity much larger than that of the LIII XMCD effect (x-ray magnetic circular dichroism) were observed upon reversal of the magnetization of the sample or the helicity of the photon. A detailed comparison of these results with XMCD results from both the MIV,V edges and LIII edge of Gd metal will be discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The results from a new crystal spectrometer for high-resolution inelastic scattering and resonant Raman scattering spectroscopy are presented. It is based on a cylindrically bent silicon crystal in standard Rowland circle geometry where the energy dispersion is obtained nonconventionally by placing a position sensitive detector perpendicular to the scattering plane. The advantage of this geometry is that the energy dispersion is only about one order of magnitude larger than the intrinsic energy resolution of the instrument, allowing the optimization of the collection efficiency within a narrower energy range of interest while preserving the practical realization of a cylindrically bent crystal. A total energy resolution of 0.7 eV at 8 keV with an energy dispersion of only a few eV was reached. Potential applications of this new geometry as well as comparison with other focusing geometries are also discussed. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A fixed-exit double crystal monochromator based on one rotation has been designed for an absorption spectroscopy beamline. The first crystal is mounted in the center of rotation, while the second crystal is translated by simple mechanical means. This change of the gap distance d keeps the beam offset constant. The second crystal is tuned by a simple digital feedback system, which allows us to control both θ and χ. The first crystal is mounted in the center of rotation to improve its cooling compared to the existing boomerang design, which only allows indirect cooling. In the present design, the cooling lines are fixed on the circle and are moved together with the crystal, so that no additional force acts on the crystal. The monochromator has been tested between 5 and 11 keV for the Si(111) reflection and between 6.5 and 8 keV for the Si(333) reflection. The beam motions were less than 300 μm with the mechanism not optimized. Measurements of the Cu K edge extended x-ray absorption fine structure in CuO gave the same result as from a conventional double crystal channel-cut crystal. See J. A. Golovchenko, R. A. Levesque, and P. L. Cowan, Rev. Sci. Instrum. 52, 509 (1981). © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary Two men, who had been treated with anticoagulants, got a large hematoma under the tongue. The hematoma of one of them was so large, that he got a severe dyspnoe. After the substitution of the lack of coagulation factors the dyspnoe disappeared. The lack of prothrombin had been intensified by other drugs.

Notes: Abstract: Results of high-energy magnetic X-ray diffraction on pure antiferromagnetic chromium are presented. The temperature dependence of the propagation vector of the spin-density wave (SDW) and the strain-wave (SW) could be reproduced. The temperature dependence of the magnetic integrated intensity could be measured in the transversally as well as in the longitudinally polarised SDW phase. The magnetic form-factor has been determined in the transversally polarised SDW phase with five magnetic satellites. For the first time a spin-orbit separation has been performed by comparing X-ray to neutron data. The small orbital contribution to the magnetisation density turns out to be negligible, in agreement to our relativistic band-structure calculations. In addition, measurements of strain-wave reflections have been undertaken, and the results complement previous studies.

Notes: Abstract. We have investigated the magnetic ordering of Nd2-x Ce x CuO4 for x = 0, 0.09, 0.13, 0.15 and 0.18 by neutron diffraction at low temperatures down to 33 mK and under magnetic field up to 5 tesla applied along [1,-1,0] crystallographic direction. At zero applied magnetic field Cu magnetic sublattice orders at $T_{N} \approx 250$ , 210, 130 and 105 K for x = 0, 0.09, 0.13, 0.15, respectively. No long range magnetic order of the Cu could be detected for x = 0.18. The magnetic order of Nd was found in all samples, with a gradual increase of the polarized magnetic moment with decreasing temperature, saturating around 1 K. Hyperfine induced nuclear polarization of the Nd nuclear spin has been observed below about 400 mK for samples with x = 0, 0.13, 0.15 and 0.18. Field variation of the intensities of the principal and superstructure reflections of Nd2-x Ce x CuO4 at millikelvin temperatures shows a field-induced second-order double-k to single-k phase transition at H c = 0.75 and 0.56 tesla for samples with x = 0 and 0.15, respectively at T = 50 mK. We have also investigated the polarization of the Nd electronic sublattice due to the field of the Cu sublattice by the element specific X-ray resonant magnetic scattering investigation with synchrotron radiation.

Notes: Zusammenfassung 1.
