Notes: The magnetic properties of Ag/Ni multilayered films, prepared by the vacuum evaporation method, as a function of different thicknesses of Ni and Ag layers have been studied. It has been found that the magnetic moment of the Ni layer decreases greatly with increase of the thickness of the Ag layer. The temperature dependence of magnetization exhibits the features of Bloch's T3/2 law with a large value of the Bloch coefficient, B3/2, which also depends on the thickness of the Ag layer when the thickness of the Ni layer is fixed at 30 A(ring). These phenomena can be explained by means of the itinerant electron theory. Furthermore, the magnetic size effect of Ag/Ni multilayered films, such as a reduced Curie temperature as a function of the thickness of the Ni layer tNi and a linear dependence of magnetization on temperature for T〈175 K when tNi=10 A(ring), have been discussed.

Notes: The ability to measure resistive current resulting from high-field carrier mobility in dielectrics provides insight into transport phenomena and high-voltage performance. The threshold electric field for the formation of a space-charge limited field region under highly inhomogeneous field conditions has fundamental significance in that above this field, rapid degradation takes place from hot electrons and UV photons generated by carrier recombination. A guarded needle electrode with a tip radius in the range of 5 μm and an electrical guard which extends to within about 35 μm of the tip provides the basis for measuring high-field mobility as the resistive current can be measured independent of the displacement current. The residual displacement current resulting from the fF capacitance from the needle tip to the opposite plane electrode is compensated out of the measurement. In this article, we provide construction details for such a guarded needle. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Diamond-Like carbon (DLC) films were prepared under different bias voltage by directcurrent magnetic filter cathode vacuum arc deposition (DC-MFCVAD). Bias voltages changed from0 to -200 V. The study intends to investigate the effect on the properties of DLC films forbiomedical applications. X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS) was used to investigate compositionof the films. Nano-scratch tests were used to characterize effects of bias voltage to adhesion.Furthermore, the wettability of the DLC films was investigated by contact angle measurementsusing four common liquids. Finally, platelet adhesion experiments were done to evaluate theinteraction of blood with DLC films. The results showed that the adhesion, wettability andhemo-compatibility of DLC films were affected by bias voltage

Notes: Abstract The long-term stability of hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings has been under investigation for a long time. The evaluation of crystallinity is important since a relationship exists between the degree of crystallinity and the degradation by in vitro cellular reaction. However, the choice of a representative peak to calculate the crystallinity is the subject of some controversy with the (2 1 1) peak and the (0 0 2) peak being the most commonly analysed peaks. Thus the determination of the degree of crystallinity may be biased due to preferred orientation (texture) in the coatings. Therefore, the dependence of texture on thickness during plasma spraying was investigated by the calculation of a texture coefficient (TC). Experiment results showed that the TC value of the (0 0 2) and (0 0 4) peaks increased with thickness and that the TC value in the (2 1 1) peak decreased. This was caused by a high temperature gradient during spraying and also the growth direction for a hexagonal system. It was observed that appropriately controlled temperature increases during annealing did not bring about notable texture to the recrystallized crystallites. However, if the temperature gradient was high during annealing, notable (0 0 2) texture can exist. The effect of particle size on the texture was also investigated.

Notes: The three-dimensional EHMO crystal orbital calculations for crystalline C60, Ca3C60, and Ca5C60 are reported. The ground states of both undoped solid C60 and partially doped Ca3C60 are found to be insulating with an indirect energy gap of 1.2 and 0.5 eV, respectively. In contrast, Ca5C60 forms a metallic conducting phase with a set of three half-filled bands crossing the Fermi level, which is found to be located close to a peak of the density of state. The character of crystal orbitals near the Fermi level for both Ca3C60 and Ca5C60 is completely carbonlike. In both cases, the Ca atoms are almost fully ionized and C60 molecules form a stable negative charge state with six to 10 additional electrons. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: X-ray diffraction was used to characterize the increment of crystallinity of HA coatings after heat treatment. Coatings were heated over the temperature (T) interval of 300°-460°C with a partial water vapor pressure of 0.01 MPa and 0.001 MPa. Heat treatment also was done in air, as a contrast. It was found that the ratio (n) of the increment of crystallinity to the crystallinity of the as-received HA coatings was more significant for the coatings heated in atmosphere with water vapor than for those heated in air. This ratio also increased with water vapor pressure. The logarithm of the ratio increased linearly with 1-T, indicating that the ratio is exponential to T. The reason might be that recrystallization of the amorphous phase is a diffusion controlled process; the nucleation rate and growth velocity of the crystallites are in proportion to the diffusion coefficient, which is exponential to the temperature (T). Incorporation of water vapor in the atmosphere during heat treatment may decrease the activation energy for diffusion, which helps raise the diffusion coefficient of the atoms. Thus recrystallization of the amorphous phase can be accelerated. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
