Notes: Abstract In 931 leprosy patients from Bankura, West Bengal, India, the relationship between the AB0 blood group and the immunological type of leprosy (lepromatous vs. nonlepromatous) was examined. Among the 472 lepromatous patients, there was a slight excess of blood group A (and also AB and B) as compared with the nonlepromatous group. This excess was not significant statistically in our material. However, combination of the data with those published by Beiguelman (1964) from Brazil and Yankah (1965) from Ghana renders a significantly higher incidence of group A (and probably B and AB) in lepromatous patients.

Notes: Summary Haemagglutination-inhibiting variola antibodies were compared in 50 smallpox survivors (P), 50 siblings who had shown no signs of smallpox (CI) and 44 persons living in villages which had apparently been free of the infection during recent years (CII). Only unvaccinated persons were examined. Distribution of titres was identical in groups P and CI, whereas the average values in group CII were lower.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Zwei Probleme wurden untersucht: 1.
Notes: Summary Two problems were examined: 1. Is there an association between prevalence and clinical course of leprosy and the Inv(1) polymorphism? 2. Do the Inv(1) types influence the amount of gamma globulin present in the serum? Material: 961 Indians (302 with lepromatous, 284 with nonlepromatous leprosy; 375 controls) from 5 different caste groups, districts of Bankura and Purulia, West Bengal; 494 leprosy patients from Thailand (240 with lepromatous, 254 with nonlepromatous leprosy); 988 controls; this control group was examined only for Inv type, not for gamma globulins. Results: 1. There seems to be no association between leprosy and Inv type. 2. No association between Inv type and gamma globulin content of the serum was found. 3. The phenotype frequencies in the Inv system are within the range known for other Indian and Asian populations.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Zwei Bevölkerungsgruppen in Assam (Indien) wurden untersucht.
Notes: Summary Two groups in Assam (India) were examined. Among 80 Khasi (Bhoi subgroup), an austroasiatic tribal group, there were 41% HbE carriers; and in 82 Ahom, a group related to the Thai population, 58% of HbE carriers were found. This high prevalence of HbE in groups with ethnic relations to Southeast Asia supports the contention that the HbE gene was introduced to India from that area.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Beziehungen zwischen AB0-Blutgruppen sowie Häufigkeit, Typ und Verlauf der Lepraerkrankung wurden an 1034 Indern aus West-Bengalen (Lepra-Patienten und normalen Kontrollen) untersucht.
Notes: Summary The associations between ABO blood groups and prevalence as well as type and severity of the leprosy infection were examined in 1034 Indians from West Bengal (leprosy patients and normal controls). There are no associations in the present series; combined analysis of 41 series from the literature (ours included) gives a slightly, but significantly higher frequency of groups A and AB as compared to B and 0 in leprosy patients. Groups A, B, and AB are also somewhat more frequent in lepromatous as compared with nonlepromatous leprosy. A lower level of α2-globulins in the serum of leprosy patients of groups A and AB as compared with patients of groups B and 0, which had been described earlier in 683 leprosy patients from Thailand, was confirmed in the present series. In the Thai series of patients, a significant association between the AB0 blood groups and the Inv serum groups was observed: Persons having blood group A and AB as well as the Inv (1) type were significantly more frequent than expected. This association, however, was not confirmed in the Indian material.

Notes: Abstract The problem was reexamined whether there is a relationship between the AB0 blood groups and incidence, severity and outcome of smallpox. In persons suffering from smallpox, and living in rural areas of West Bengal and Bihar, India, severity and outcome of the disease were registered, and the AB0 blood groups were determined. Healthy siblings were used as controls for incidence. Four series were available: 1. 200 suffering patients and 200 controls examined during summer 1965 in the Burdwan district. West Bengal. 2. 237 suffering patients and 228 controls examined during spring 1966 in West Bengal and Bihar. 415 of the cases contained in series 1 and 2 had never been vaccinated; the mortality was about 50%. 3. 402 survivors of a 1964 epidemic, who were examined during the 1965 survey in the Burdwan district, and 350 control siblings. 4. 147 survivors of the 1966 epidemic who were examined during the 1966 survey in the same area. Relative incidence of smallpox was shown to the much higher in suffering patients of groups A and AB, when compared with the healthy siblings (x=6.09; χ2 (DF=1)=128.92). Within the patient group, severe forms and fatal outcome were significantly more frequent in groups A and AB as compared with groups B and 0. The surviving cases showed a much higher frequency of groups B and 0 than the fresh cases of the same area, indicating a much higher mortality of A and AB persons also in these series. Within the group of survivors, severe smallpox scars were significantly more frequent in groups A and AB. The combined results of an examination of 986 smallpox patients and 778 controls gave conclusive evidence in favour of a strong disadvantage of groups A and AB towards the smallpox infection. However, as comparison with other series shows, the influence of the blood group seems to be confined to severe manifestations in unvaccinated persons who are living under natural, primitive conditions without medical care. Some immunological implications of the result are discussed.

Notes: Summary On a sample of n=601 leprous individuals and n=386 healthy controls from West Bengal (India) the question is discussed, if there are existing any associations between leprosy and several serum protein groups like haptoglobin, Gc, ceruloplasmin, transferrin, β 2 I and Pi. No associations were found concerning the haptoglobins and transferrins. Certain associations came out respecting ceruloplasmin, β 2 I and Pi phenotypes. However, these associations, which were found in connection with the different types and clinical courses of leprosy, should be reexamined by further research. The most striking results were obtained concerning the Gc proteins. In accordance with previously performed investigations on Brazilians and in particular on Negroes from Moçambique statistically high significant surplusses of Gc 1-1 phenotypes in individuals suffering from leprosy could be demonstrated. This indicates in our opinion the existence of a relationship between Gc proteins and leprosy, which, however, must also be disclosed by further genetical and especially by pathophysiological research.

Notes: Abstract The present review was visualised as a search for relationship between non-ABO blood group systems including the AB(H) secretor types and susceptibility to representative group of diseases associated with various systems of the body. The materials were collected from all publications available to us during 1950–1967. For statistical evaluation, the method of Woolf (1955) was followed. It becomes evident from the various reports that many of the authors were aware of the possible biases, and did their best to avoid them. Three degrees of probabilities have been considered. The possible association of certain diseases to particular blood groups or types has been discussed. It is the main purpose of this review to show, where there are possible relationships, and to encourage further investigations in the same direction.
