    Notes: High-energy multiparticle production events have been heavily studied using varies models, particularly the QCD-based parton branching model first proposed by A. Giovannini [Nucl. Phys. B 161, 429 (1979)]. Presented here is an asymptotic solution that is the probability distribution by using a simple saddle point approach. Its mechanism and properties will also be elucidated.

    Notes: Abstract The multifractal behaviours of the various types of high energy collisions are analyzed using the normalized factorial moments which are calculated from the experimental data. Thef(α) curves for the various types of collision are constructed. The ‘width’ of thef(α) curves seems to indicate roughly degree of intermittency or fluctuation of the data. The width of the curves also does not seem to be affected by the energy.

    Notes: Abstract We present a multiplicity distribution which is a solution to the stochastic branching equation proposed by Giovannini. This solution is more commonly known as generalized multiplicities distribution (GMD) and has already been successfully applied to bothpp andp $$\bar p$$ collisions. It assumes that shapes and energy dependence of distributions are basically determined by hard parton scattering and subsequent branching. We apply GMD to the recente + e − data by Tasso Collaboration.

    Notes: The debate on the performance of Lagrangian and Serendipity elements in Mindlin's plate theory has been going on for quite some time. Limited published results for static and vibration analysis based on exact integration demonstrated a drastic deterioration in accuracy as the thickness of the plate decreases, and reduced/selective integration schemes have been suggested to improve their performance. Appreciable improvement for Lagrangian elements has been recorded, but it is only marginal for the Serendipity elements. On the strength of such observations one would then be tempted to rule out the exact integration schemes and Serendipity elements.In this paper, the above problem is reviewed for stability analysis of plates. Two elements are chosen from each family, one representing the higher order and the other the lower order element. Contrary to published results, all elements can attain very accurate solutions independent of the integration schemes for a sufficiently restrained plate, although in general the Serendipity elements will require a more refined mesh than the Lagrangian ones. However, for loosely restrained plates, the solution failed when integration is performed by reduced/selective schemes. The failure marks the limitation of the reduced/selective schemes which have somehow introduced spurious modes into the system, but on the other hand it is ironical that these spurious modes in fact contribute to the improvement of performance of the restrained cases. Therefore, one can equally improve the Serendipity elements by a selective scheme which can introduce additional zero modes. A scheme based on (5 × 5) integration points for flexural stiffness and (3 × 3) integration points for shear stiffness improved the 17SE (Serendipity elements) remarkably. However, because of the lack of bounds in most cases, the use of reduced/selected schemes is still not recommended. Finally, this paper also proposed an approximate formulation of the geometric stiffness matrices to replace the full formulation. Such an approximate formulation reduces the number of variables considerably in the eigenvalue search and can still give reasonably accurate results for thin plates with a/t 〉 15.

    Notes: This paper presents a simple procedure for modifying the dynamic coupled soil-pore fluid equations in a manner which allows a stable and efficient staggered solution procedure to be used. The solution method is simpler than an alternative suggested by Park15 and has a direct physical interpretation. This stabilized procedure is efficient in numerical time domain analysis of soil-pore fluid occurring in earthquake and consolidation problems. Numerical examples of one and two dimensional saturated poroelastic media demonstrate the procedure.

    Notes: Abstract The behaviour of non-linear systems often yield unexpected phenomena which are extremely sensitive to initial conditions. The hydrodynamic journal bearing is a common machine element which is strongly nonlinear for large excursions within the clearance space. A simple model of a rigid journal, supported hydrodynamically using a short bearing theory is shown to behave chaotically when the rotating unbalance force exceeds the gravitational load. At these values of the force ratio the time history of the response is very sensitive to initial conditions and a spectral analysis demonstrates a significant broadening from the expected peak at the rotational frequency. A once per revolution sampling of the time history (Poincaré plot) revealed an apparent aperiodic pattern. An estimate of the fractal dimension using the Grasberger-Procaccia algorithm resulted in a lower bound of 2.15, a typical result for low dimensional systems with significant dissipative action. The required levels of unbalance are only an order of magnitude greater than acceptable levels for rotating machinery and thus could be achieved with in-service erosion or minor damage. The subsequent non-synchronous response could result in fatigue and potential shaft failure.

    Notes: High pressure CO2 sorption data in polycarbonate (PC) are reported as a function of temperature and thermal history. The bulk physical structural changes produced by annealing at 125 and 135°C were monitored by density and thermal property changes. The sorption data are analyzed by the dual sorption model which assumes the sorption isotherm to consist of Henry's law and Langmuir sorption terms; The Langmuir capacity term CH′ of PC can be grossly correlated with the reported volumetric parameters of the polymer. This excess volume interpretation of CH′ has found support in the good correlation between CH′ and the corresponding enthalpy relaxation from parallel Differential Thermal Analysis of the samples. Density measurements provide gross evidence of the free volume interpretation of CH′. The experimental uncertainties in the data compromise a more critical test of the relationship between CH′ and the density of annealed samples.

    Notes: Glassy polycarbonate has been subjected to sub-glass-transition annealing and exposure to high-pressure CO2. The subsequently measured solubilities of nitrogen, argon, and CO2 in these specimens were found to be decreased by the former and increased by the latter. Annealing decreases the enthalpy of polycarbonate and mechanically embrittles it, whereas subsequent exposure to CO2 erases these effects of annealing, can make the polymer even more ductile than the untreated material, and can apparently give it a higher enthalpy. Annealing densifies the glass, whereas the CO2 treatment dilates it. The gas sorption observations are in accord with the dual-sorption model, and the effects of prior history are apparently the result of changes in the Langmuir capacity, which evidently is a sorption mechanism that exists as a result of the nonequilibrium nature, or excess volume, of the glassy state.
