    Notes: Abstract We are concerned with approximate methods to construct global solutions with geometrical structure to the compressible Euler-Poisson equations in several space variables. A shock capturing numerical scheme is introduced to overcome the new difficulties from the nonlinear resonance of the system and the nonlocal behavior of the source terms. The convergence and consistency of the shock capturing scheme for the equations is proved with the aid of the compensated compactness method. Then new existence results of the global solutions with geometrical structure are obtained. The traces of the weak solutions are defined and then the weak solutions are proved to satisfy the boundary conditions. The initial data are arbitrarily large withL ∞ bounds.

    Notes: Abstract Preflare phenomena have been analysed in 76 radio bursts observed in four frequencies (1.42, 2.13, 2.84, and 4.26 GHz). For 23 in the 76 events the rapid fluctuation rate of the radio radiation in one of the frequencies started to rise prior to the flare onsets by a time range from several minutes to tens of minutes. Three examples of the 23 events are presented in detail to demonstrate this kind of precursor.

    Notes: Abstract Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) are synthesized by many bacteria as inclusion bodies, and their biodegradability and structural diversity have been studied with a view to their potential application as biodegradable materials. In this paper, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) was used to carry out rapid qualitative analysis of PHA in intact bacterial cells. The FT-IR spectra of pure PHA containing short-chain-length monomers, such as hydroxybutyrate (HB), medium-chain-length hydroxyalkanoate (mclHA) monomers including hydroxyoctanoate (HO) and hydroxydecanoate (HD), or both HB and mclHA monomers, showed their strong characteristic band at 1728 cm−1, 1740 cm−1 or 1732 cm−1 respectively. Other accompanying bands near 1280 cm−1 and 1165 cm−1 helped identify the types of PHA. The intensity of the methylene band near 2925 cm−1 provided additional information for PHA characterization. In comparison, bacterial cells accumulating the above PHA also showed strong marker bands at 1732 cm−1, 1744 cm−1 or 1739 cm−1, corresponding to intracellular PHB, mclPHA and P(HB + mclHA) respectively. The accompanying bands visible in pure PHA were also observable in the intact cells. The FT-IR results were further confirmed by gas chromatography analysis.

    Notes: Abstract. In this paper we analyze a shock capturing method, developed by Chen-Glimm [4], to construct approximate solutions of the transonic nozzle flow and the spherically symmetric flow for the compressible Euler equations and related equations. The $L^\infty$ -stability, $H^{-1}$ -compactness, and convergence of the approximate solutions are proved for any adiabatic exponent $\gamma〉1$ for the isentropic Euler equations. The corresponding global solutions are obtained for arbitrarily large $L^\infty$ initial data.

    Notes: Abstract. We are concerned with the asymptotic behavior of entropy solutions of conservation laws. A new notion about the asymptotic stability of Riemann solutions is introduced, and corresponding analytical frameworks are developed. The correlation between the asymptotic problem and many important topics in conservation laws and nonlinear analysis is recognized and analyzed, such as zero dissipation limits, uniqueness of entropy solutions, entropy analysis, and divergence-measure fields in $L^\infty$ . Then this theory is applied to understanding the asymptotic behavior of entropy solutions for many important systems of conservation laws.

    Notes: The time evolution of a line puff, a turbulent non-buoyant element with significant momentum, is studied using the renormalization group (RNG) k-∊ model. The numerical results show that the puff motion is characterized by a vortex pair flow; the computed flow details and scalar mixing characteristics can be described by self-similar relations beyond a dimensionless time of around 30. The added mass coefficient of the puff motion is found to be approximately unity. The predicted puff flow and mixing rate are substantially similar to those obtained from the standard k-∊ model and are well supported by experimental data. The computed scalar field reveals significant secondary concentration peaks trailing behind in the wake of the puff. The present results suggest that the overall mixing rate of a puff is primarily determined by the large-scale motion and that streamline curvature probably plays a minor role. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
