    Notes: A novel system to measure the ratio of transverse velocity to axial velocity (α) of a low voltage, axis-rotating electron beam is described herein. With the system, more information about the beam can be obtained than from the usual slit/phosphor screen system. Since most of the beam is undisturbed before the phosphor screen, the beam radius and azimuthal symmetry can be quantified in combination with the beam α along various axial positions. The diagnostic is applied to a Cusptron microwave tube to measure these electron beam parameters which are important for high tube efficiency. Two magnetic field profiles are used to study various causes of low beam quality, while a third profile is used in attempt to maintain a high quality beam. By using the described system, it is shown that the third profile significantly increases beam quality. The system can easily be extended to higher energy beams with an appropriate scintillator.

    Notes: The improvement of luminosity and luminous efficiency is the one of the most important tasks in alternating current plasma display panels. The influence of gas mixture ratio, Ne–Xe and He–Ne(27%)–Xe(3%), on luminosity and luminous efficiency in surface discharge alternating-current plasma display panels has been investigated. It is found that discharge power does not strongly depend on the gas mixtures, while the luminosity for three species mixture gas, He–Ne(27%)–Xe(3%), is shown to be much higher than those for the two species mixture gas of Ne–Xe. The three species mixture gas, He–Ne(27%)–Xe(3%), can be suggested as the one of the candidates for achieving high luminosity and luminous efficiency for color plasma display panels, based on the experimental observations of luminosity, discharge power, response time, and efficiency. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Conductivity and ion density of a plasma channel induced by a mildly relativistic electron beam (300 kV, ∼2 kA, 10–50 ns) have been experimentally investigated under various gas pressures. Pressures of filling gas (air) in this experiment ranged from 10 mTorr to 100 mTorr. The net currents of the beam-induced plasma channel were measured by four Rogowski coils located along the propagating region, while the electron beam currents were measured by a Faraday cup. The inductive plasma currents observed at the above pressure regimes have been characterized by magnetic decay time. Plasma-channel conductivity and ion density induced by the beam are measured along the propagating axial positions under various gas pressures. The numerical result of the ion density is also obtained at the charge neutralization time when the ion density is just the same as the electron beam density, and the digitizing experimental data of the beam current Ib(t) and voltage Vd(t) have been used. As expected, in both numerical and experimental results the ion density increases to a peak value of about 3.0×1011 cm−3 and 3.3×1011 cm−3, respectively, at 50 mTorr and slowly decreases for both cases as the gas pressure increases from 50 mTorr to 100 mTorr. Moreover, the results of ion density predicted by the theoretical model developed here are also found to be in remarkably good agreement with experimental and numerical results at pressure regimes from 10 mTorr to 100 mTorr. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A theoretical model for energy spread and shift of peak energy distribution in a charged particle beam is developed. The beam may expand radially and axially as it propagates downstream. Charged particles placed randomly in the beam possess different potentials, which are converted to different kinetic energies as the beam propagates and expands. This randomness introduces energy spread in the beam. It is also shown that the shift of peak energy distribution in beam particles is proportional to the one-third power of the beam current, which is the manifestation of random particle locations. The theoretical predictions of the energy-distribution shift agree remarkably well with experimental data. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report a case of cutaneous tuberculosis presenting as cellulitis. The patient was a 63-year-old Korean woman who also had diabetes mellitus and a 20-year-history of oral corticosteroid medication prescribed for arthralgia. In addition, she had had pulmonary tuberculosis 20-year previously for which she received systemic treatment for 1 year. Her clinical cellulitis failed to respond to antibiotic therapy. Subsequent investigations, using histopathology and polymerase chain reaction, established an alternative diagnosis of cutaneous tuberculosis. The skin eruption cleared after treatment with isoniazid, rifampicin, ethambutol and pyrazinamide. This case represents a most unusual presentation of tuberculosis in the skin. The atypical features may reflect the patient's general medical state.
