Notes: Field trials were conducted to evaluate herbicides for weed control in groundnut from 1977 to 1979. The pre-emergence herbicides used were alachlor and metolachlor, applied alone or mixed with terbutryne. Some treatments were followed either by post-emergence bentazone or by one supplementary hoe-weeding. In the southern Guinea savanna zone, where early grass weed control was more important, alachlor or metolachlor at 1.5 kg ha−1 gave adequate weed control and pod yields comparable with that of the hoe-weeded check. There was no advantage in adding terbutryne, or in supplementary hoeweeding or post-emergence bentazone application. In the northern Guinea savanna zone, grass and broad-leaved weeds were equally important. Application of alachlor, metolachlor or mixtures with terbutryne (2:1) at 1.5 kg ha−1 required post-emergence application of bentazone or supplementary hoe-weeding for effective weed control and high pod yield. The reduction in pod yield on untreated control plots ranged between 18 and 70% of the best treatment in these trials.

Notes: Summary. Pre-emergence application of 2–5 kg/ha (a.i.) of atrazine or simazine was the most effective treatment for control of broad-leaved weeds in maize. Other triazines injured maize at all rates tested. Among the crops following maize treated with atrazine or simazine at 2–5 kg/ha, sugar beet was injured whereas wheat, oats, vetch, onions and soybeans were not.Post-emergence application of triazine herbicides was not effective and did not increase maize yields significantly over those of the unweeded plots. Wheat, oats, vetch and sugar beet were injured when following maize treated with post-emergence sprays; onions and soybeans showed no visible injury except from atrazine or simazine at 5 kg/ha or more, and from mixtures of atrazine+prometryne or atrazine+ametryne at 12–5 kg/ha.Les triazines herbicides sur le mais et leurs arrière-effets sur les cultures suivantes

Notes: Summary The cardiovascular responses to ketamine injected intracisternally were examined in chloralose anaesthetized cats. Blood pressure and heart rate were recorded at different time intervals after intracisternal injection of drug or saline vehicle. The low doses of ketamine (0.5 or 1.0 mg) elicited dose dependent increase in blood pressure and heart rate. In contrast the high dose of ketamine (4 mg), produced a fall in blood pressure and heart rate. The cardiovascular response elicited by the low dose was naloxone insensitive and completely blocked by haloperidol, but not by dopamine antagonist pimozide. The vasodepressor and bradycardiac effect of the 4 mg dose was naloxone antagonizable. These data show that excitatory cardiovascular effects of the low dose result from a naloxone resistant site while in high doses an inhibitory effect is elicited by action at naloxone sensitive opiate receptors.

Notes: Abstract. In this paper we present a unified treatment that combines the analyticity properties of the scattering amplitudes, the threshold and asymptotic behaviors, the invariance group of Moebius transformations, the automorphic functions defined over this invariance group, the fundamental region in (Poincaré) geometry, and the generators of the invariance group as they relate to the fundamental region. Using these concepts and techniques, we provide a theoretical basis for Veneziano type amplitudes with the ghost elimination condition built in, related the Regge trajectory functions to the generators of the invariance group, constrained the values of the Regge trajectories to take only inverse integer values at the threshold, used the threshold behavior in the forward direction to deduce the Pomeranchuk trajectory as well as other relations. The enabling tool for this unified treatment came from the multi-sheet conformal mapping techniques that map the physical sheet to a fundamental region which in turn defines a Riemann surface on which a global uniformization variable for the scattering amplitude is calculated via an automorphic function, which in turn can be constructed as a quotient of two automorphic forms of the same dimension.

Notes: Abstract Activity of Cu2+-diamine oxidase (DAO; E.C.1.4.3.6.) was measured in Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek cultivars K851, MH8320 and Pusa Baisakhi in light and in dark during ontogeny of seedlings. DAO activity was always the highest in cv. K851. In both light and dark grown seedlings maximum DAO activity was detected on day 2 after germination. Thereafter, in light grown seedlings it declined consistently upto non-detectable levels. In dark, DAO activity was higher than in light and it had the second maximum on day 7 following a similar declining pattern as observed for the light grown seedlings. The DAO activity was higher in a shoot apex alongwith leaves than in roots and shoot axis.

Notes: Abstract A concentration dependent decrease in root nitrate reductase (E.C.1.6.6.1) activity (NRA) by 0.1 to 2.0 mM lead acetate was noticed in three cultivars of Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek (K851, MH8320 and ML337). Leaf NRA, on the other hand, increased significantly with increasing lead concentration which was more pronounced in cvs. MH8320 and ML337 than in cv. K851. Total nitrogen content of root and shoot was generally increased due to supply of the lead acetate, whereas the total nitrogen content of the colyledons was hardly affected in cvs. MH8320 and ML337 and decreased in cv. K851 during the early growth phase. The inhibition of root NRA could be alleviated by addition of inorganic salts (K2HPO4 and KNO3, but not CaCl2) or 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) in the incubation medium. Lead mediated inhibition of root NRA was similar in light and dark grown seedlings, but lead induced increase in leaf NRA was more pronounced in the light than in the dark.

Notes: Abstract This paper gives an analysis of the distribution of thermal stress in an elastic layer bonded to two half-spaces along its plane surfaces and contains a penny-shaped crack parallel to the interfaces. The crack is situated in the mid-plane of the layer. The thermal and elastic properties of the layer and of the half-spaces are assumed to be different. The problem is first reduced to dual integral equations. These equations are further reduced to Fredholm integral equations of the second kind which are solved iteratively. Expressions for quantities of physical interest are derived.

Notes: Abstract With the increasing number of scientific applications manipulating huge amounts of data, effective high-level data management is an increasingly important problem. Unfortunately, so far the solutions to the high‐level data management problem either require deep understanding of specific storage architectures and file layouts (as in high-performance file storage systems) or produce unsatisfactory I/O performance in exchange for ease-of-use and portability (as in relational DBMSs). In this paper we present a novel application development environment which is built around an active meta-data management system (MDMS) to handle high-level data in an effective manner. The key components of our three-tiered architecture are user application, the MDMS, and a hierarchical storage system (HSS). Our environment overcomes the performance problems of pure database-oriented solutions, while maintaining their advantages in terms of ease-of-use and portability. The high levels of performance are achieved by the MDMS, with the aid of user-specified, performance-oriented directives. Our environment supports a simple, easy-to-use yet powerful user interface, leaving the task of choosing appropriate I/O techniques for the application at hand to the MDMS. We discuss the importance of an active MDMS and show how the three components of our environment, namely the application, the MDMS, and the HSS, fit together. We also report performance numbers from our ongoing implementation and illustrate that significant improvements are made possible without undue programming effort.
