    Notes: To study the growth mechanism in growing superconducting thin films by the liquid-gas-solidification process, oxygen diffusivities in liquid Tl1Ba2Ca2Cu3 and Ag1Tl1Ba2Ca2Cu3 precursor alloys were measured by a modified coulometric titration method. The diffusivities of oxygen are very high of the order of 10−4 to 10−3 cm2/s. The logarithm of oxygen diffusivities is found to be reciprocally proportional to the logarithm of oxygen concentrations. This concentration-dependent oxygen diffusivity phenomenon has not been observed in many metallic liquids investigated previously. An interstitial diffusion mechanism may contribute to the fast oxygen diffusion. The strong bonds between Ba and O atoms are proposed to enhance the configurational structural order and hence to quicken the oxygen diffusion that varies the oxygen concentration in Tl1Ba2Ca2Cu3 and Ag1Tl1Ba2Ca2Cu3 superconductor precursor liquids. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Three Y1Ba2Cu3O7−δ superconducting thin films with 20%, 60%, and 100% coverage of precipitates were fabricated into microbridges of 25×650 μm2 by a conventional photolithography method. These microbridges exhibit a Tco(R=0) from 83.6 to 87.2 K and a transition width of about 1.8 K. These also have (dR/dt)max values of about 71–78 Ω/K. We find that the fewer the precipitates on the film, the better the thermal conduction, and a larger responsivity (S) can be achieved. The best responsivity of 783 V/W measured at Ib=8 mA, Top=86.8 K, and f=2 Hz for various wavelengths of light sources is obtained from the film with 20% precipitation. The photoresponse signals decay exponentially with the precipitation coverages, which indicates that these precipitates behave as thermal resistance layers that smooth out the ac incident signal, suppress the rise in microbridge temperature, and result in a smaller photoresponse signal for the bolometer. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A photodetector with high responsivity has been fabricated with a high quality Y1Ba2Cu3O7−δ film on a regular SrTiO3 (100) substrate that has no thinning or etching. The film exhibits a precipitation-free morphology and has an extremely smooth surface having a rms roughness smaller than 5 nm. The film was patterned into a 25×650 μm2 long microbridge by a conventional photolithography technique. The Tco of the microbridge can be tuned by applying different bias currents, which results in a tunable operation temperature of the photodetector at 77.35±1 K. This makes it operationally more practical and economical. The noise voltage at 10 mA bias current is less than the resolution of our setup, 15 nV Hz−0.5. A high responsivity of 2.3×103 V/W was obtained when a bias current of 8 mA and a low power density He–Ne laser of 0.08 J/cm2 s chopped at 2 Hz were applied on the microbridge at 77.35 K. Under the same condition, the noise equivalent power (NEP) and detectivity (D*) have been measured to be 4.34×10−12 W Hz−0.5 and 3×109 cm Hz0.5 W−1, respectively. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Whereas organs from donors must be removed almost immediately after death to maximize organ viability in the recepient, there is a slightly longer window for tissue allograft recovery. To determine the maximum safe interval after death within which bone allografts may be harvested for clinical use, an experimental model was devised using adult Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats and duplicating cadaveric storage techniques. Allografts were procured at increasing time intervals after death. The grafts were then transplanted to 80 living SD rats, and the animals killed at 7 weeks to evaluate any increase in the risk of infection and bacterial colonization. None of the allografts procured within 48 h after death were colonized with bacteria, while 12% of grafts procured at 96 h and 50% of allografts procured at 1 week were colonized. The results suggest that it may be possible to extend the safe period within which cadaveric tissue may be procured for transplantation to up to 96 h following death, provided scrupulous measures to prevent and detect microorganism contamination are followed.

    Notes: Abstract Between 1989 and 1996, 21 skeletally immature patients were treated for osteosarcoma of the extremity. Their average age was 12.6 years (range 9–16 years). We classified the location and extent of the lesion in bone on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with reference to the growth plate and joint margin into five subtypes. This classification served as a guide for the level of resection and the type of reconstruction required for a limb salvage procedure. All patients received neoadjuvant chemotherapy using a modified T10 protocol before the definitive operation. These patients were followed up for periods ranging from 11–86 months, with a mean of 35.5 months. Patients were assessed for (1) local tumour recurrence, (2) metastatic disease, (3) allograft complications and (4) extremity function and joint stability. Excellent function was retained in 2, good in 13 and fair function in 6 patients. The MRI classification proved useful for the resection and provides an insight into the possible functional outcomes.
