Notizen: Osteogenesis imperfecta or brittle bone disease (BBD) is a most unusual disease and a limited number of people in the world are suffering from it. Most studies focus on the medical aspects of the disease and very little has been done with regard to the pedagogical and psycho-social aspects of the disease. This article is based on a questionnaire answered by 30 families, and interviews with 10 families with children and adolescents with BBD, and the purpose is to survey the consequences of the disease in daily life. Although medical treatment is of utmost importance, it is necessary to regard also other aspects, as it is significant to have a holistic view of the child in his/her environment.

Notizen: Abstract With conventional manual triggering technique pulmonary exposures expected to time end-inspiration were made on 51 small children. These exposures showed a random distribution. Transthoracic impedance reflects the variations in the pulmonary air-fluid ratio during respiration. In 94 infants and small children the transthoracic impedance was monitored while pulmonary exposures were triggered by a pulse given at the level of end-inspiration or end-expiration. It was found that transthoracic impedance as a triggering device permitted precise matching of the exposures to end-inspiration or end-expination.

Notizen: Abstract Details of a female infant, who was born after 29 weeks gestation and who died within minutes of birth, are presented. The infant was hydropic, showed macroglossia and had very short limbs with normal sized hands and feet. Apart from a preductal aortic coarctation the pathological findings were confined to the skeleton. The radiographical and histological findings are described in detail; they differ from those of previous studies of similar conditions.

Notizen: Abstract The size of a kidney, as measured on a urogram, is a sensitive indicator of renal damage in a child with urinary tract infection and renal surface area correlates well with glomerular filtration rate. Sequential measurements can be invaluable in evaluating the efficacy of a regimen of treatment. A system utilizing a personal microcomputer has been developed to facilitate the measuring procedure and the handling and analysis of data.

Notizen: Abstract A flexible parametric random model of an ultrasonic signal is presented, by means of which a broad class of signals with well known properties can be simulated This model is used to examine two time-domain methods for estimating attenuation in soft tissue. It is shown that the estimate of attenuation given by these methods is in good agreement with values obtained experimentally and they are robust against large echoes in the ultrasonic signal. Since the amount of computation needed for estimation is feasible both methods are well suited for online implementation. The estimation methods are used forin vivo measurement of attenuation in liver tissue.
