Notes: We present images of the source of extreme ultraviolet (XUV) harmonic emission at a wavelength of 220 Å from the interaction of a 20 TW, 1.053 μm Nd:glass laser beam focused to intensities up to 4×1018 W cm−2 onto a solid target. From these measurements we determine an upper limit to the source size and brightness of the harmonic emission to show its efficacy as a novel source of short-pulse, coherent XUV radiation. We also demonstrate the empirical scaling of the harmonic generation efficiency with irradiance up to 1019 W μm2 cm−2, and extrapolate to estimate the possible source brightness at higher irradiances. These source brightnesses are compared to those available from an x-ray laser system. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The energy region just above the first dissociation limit in SO is investigated by a combination of jet cooled 1+1 multiphoton ionization spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. Two electronic states, the C 3Π and d 1Π states, are found to give sharp, rotationally resolved spectra, and a complete analysis of these is presented for the first time. The potential energy curve for the d 1Π is found to be unusual, with only four bound levels and a maximum that does not correspond to a conventional avoided crossing. Our assignments are supported by ab initio calculations, which also predict the interactions between electronic states from spin–orbit coupling. Experimental evidence for these, in the form of perturbations in the observed spectra and predissociation is discussed. Based on our ab initio calculations we also reassign some previous observations to the e 1Π state. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Laser induced fluorescence and 1+1 resonance enhanced multiphoton ionisation spectra of the A 3Π–X 3Σ− transition of SO radicals prepared by an electric discharge in a supersonic jet expansion are presented. Rotational constants are given for A state vibrational levels with v′=0–13, extending to within 190 cm−1 of the A state dissociation limit. The Rydberg–Klein–Rees curve derived from these constants shows significant anharmonicity, even around the equilibrium geometry. In addition, several small local perturbations of the rotational structure are observed. Collision free fluorescence lifetimes are determined for the complete range of vibrational states, and are found to fall smoothly from 29.5 μs for v′=0 to 6.45 μs for v′=12. Combining these data with earlier measurements leads to a better determination of the A–X transition dipole moment over the range 1.4–2.0 Å. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: This paper extends our knowledge of the higher excited states of the ammonia molecule by presenting detailed measurements of the 2+1 resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) spectrum of both NH3 and ND3 obtained following excitation in the wavelength range 298–242 nm, i.e., at energies up to the first ionization energy. Complementary analyses of the wavelength resolved REMPI spectrum and the accompanying REMPI-photoelectron spectra leads to the identification of ten new Rydberg origins of NH3 (four for ND3) with principal quantum numbers n≤8 and, in most cases, of the accompanying out-of-plane bending vibrational progression. Symmetry assignments for the various newly identified excited states are offered, based on band contour simulation and/or quantum defect considerations. Dominant amongst these are the E˜″ 1A2″ (5sa1′←1a2″) state: ν0=74 118(2) cm−1 [NH3], ν0=74 258(2) cm−1 [ND3], the F˜″ 1E″ (5pe′←1a2″) state: ν0=76 220(50) cm−1 [NH3], ν0=76 240(50) cm−1 [ND3], the F˜′ 1A1′ (5pa2″←1a2″) state: ν0=76 674(1) cm−1 [NH3], ν0=76 770(5) cm−1 [ND3], and the G˜′ 1A1′ (6pa2″←1a2″) state: ν0=78 494(1) cm−1 [NH3]. The present work serves to reinforce the previously noted dominance of np←1a2″ Rydberg excitations in the 2+1 REMPI spectrum of ammonia. In addition, the adiabatic ionization energy of ND3 is estimated to be 82 280±40 cm−1 based on the assumption that analogous Rydberg states of NH3 and ND3 will have very similar quantum defects. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The A 3Π1 v=28 state of I35Cl is known from previous studies to be strongly mixed with v=69 of the X 1Σ+ state. Spectra of both these mixed states are taken at high resolution to allow accurate measurement of the hyperfine splittings due to the iodine nucleus. The hyperfine structure in both parity components of the A state is found to be perturbed, though the common rotational-electronic induced mixing should only affect the e components. Detailed analysis shows that hyperfine terms in the Hamiltonian also contribute significantly to the rovibronic state mixing. A Hamiltonian for these states is described that accounts for the hyperfine structure in both the A and X states to within the observed linewidth. The hyperfine parameters of this Hamiltonian, including the perturbation parameters, can be accounted for semi-quantitatively in terms of a separated atom model. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In a semantic priming paradigm, the effects of different levels of processing on the N400 were assessed by changing the task demands. In the lexical decision task, subjects had to discriminate between words and nonwords and in the physical task, subjects had to discriminate between uppercase and lowercase letters. The proportion of related versus unrelated word pairs differed between conditions. A lexicality test on reaction times demonstrated that the physical task was performed nonlexically. Moreover, a semantic priming reaction time effect was obtained only in the lexical decision task. The level of processing clearly affected the event-related potentials. An N400 priming effect was only observed in the lexical decision task. In contrast, in the physical task a P300 effect was observed for either related or unrelated targets, depending on their frequency of occurrence. Taken together, the results indicate that an N400 priming effect is only evoked when the task performance induces the semantic aspects of words to become part of an episodic trace of the stimulus event.
