Notes: Abstract The diagnosis of drowning is one of the most difficult in forensic pathology and previously we proposed criteria for a positive tissue analysis according to the qualitative and quantitative diatom investigations. In the positive cases, we studied the reliability of determining the site of drowning by comparing the diatom taxa found in the lung samples with those of the water samples or in the absence of these samples with the results of the water diatom monitoring programme set up in our region. In this study, we present two series of cases, the first is one of 20 corpses who died from accidental or suicidal drowning with known drowning site, and the second of 20 corpses for which the drowning site was unknown. The results showed that a concordance of the abundance of the diatom taxa in tissues compared to the site of drowning and their distribution relative to one another was 65% in the group where the site of drowning was known and 35% in the other group. The concordance of the individual distribution in the lungs of water diatom taxa may be an interesting method to guide the investigations for determining the site of drowning. The two limiting factors are the concentration of diatoms in the lungs and the development of a river monitoring programme in the district of the study.

Notes: Abstract The performance of six diatom indices to evaluate water quality has been studied in the Artois-Picardie water basin. Results show that all of them satisfactorily assess organic pollution which is the main phenomenon responsible for the degradation of water quality throughout the year. However, only the Specific Pollution Sensitivity Index (SPI), the Generic Diatom Index (GDI) and the Commission of Economical Community Index (CEC) show significant correlations with the ionic strength (expressed by chlorides, sulphates and conductivity) and eutrophication (expressed by chlorophyll and nitrates). Diatom indices do not integrate chemical parameters in the same way. Best correlations are obtained through simultaneous or average chemical analyses whereas for other parameters, best correlations are noted with chemical analyses carried out just before diatom sampling. Tests performed on different chemical data sets show that it is possible to make a realistic estimation of water quality during the summer in the Artois-Picardie water basin by using SPI in September.

Notes: Abstract Software for calculation of 6 diatom indices and diversity indices has been created for both Macintosh and IBM compatible computers. This software runs with the data base Omnis 5 under Windows 3.0. It includes three taxonomic files: families, genera and species, and an inventories file. Four types of data inputs are possible. It is always possible to operate simulations and to carry out investigations with simple or combined characters. All files and results of investigations can be listed in different ways. This data base is compatible with both word processing and spreadsheet systems.

Notes: Abstract The effects of inorganic mercury (HgII) and methylmercury (MeHg) on the colonization of artificial substrates by periphytic diatoms were studied using indoor freshwater microcosms. These consisted of a mixed biotope– water column + natural sediment – with rooted macrophyte cuttings (Elodea densa) and benthic bivalve molluscs (Corbicula fluminea). The periphyton was collected on glass slides in the water column after 34and 71 days. The two Hg sources were introduced either by daily additions to the water column, or once at the beginning into the sediment, using two nominal concentrations: water column, 0.5 μgL-1 and 2 μg L-1 for both compounds: sediment, 0.5 mg kg-1 (fw) and 2 mgkg-1 (fw) for MeHg and 1 mg kg-1 (fw) and 10 mgkg-1 (fw) for HgII. Several complementary criteria were used to analyse the structural and functional perturbations induced: cell density, species richness, diatom size, relative abundance. Exposure to MeHg added to the water column resulted in reduced cell density and changes in species composition with enhancement of e.g. Fallacia pygmaea or Nitzschia palea; inorganic Hg had less effect on the population structure. After contamination via the sediment, the effects of the two compounds were less pronounced than for the water source.

Notes: Abstract The reliability and applicability of quantitative and qualitative diatom analysis by an enzymatic digestion method in the diagnosis of drowning of putrified bodies has been evaluated. The authors report the analysis of water and organ samples of 12 immersion cases using light microscopy. This study included control organ samples from the bodies of persons who died from causes other than drowning. Organ samples were treated by both chemical and enzymatic methods, the first one using concentrated nitric acid and the second proteinase K. Diatoms were present in most organ samples of the immersed corpses; no diatoms could be found in the control samples. Our experience was that the enzymatic method seemed to be more convenient in terms of rapidity, safety and environmental protection than chemical digestion. The number of diatoms recovered with both methods was similar. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of both water and organ samples of immersion cases supported the diagnosis of death by drowning in 41.6% of the putrified cases studied. The authors suggest that diatom analysis using enzymatic digestion of organs can be used as a criterion for positive diagnosis of drowning in cases involving putrified bodies.
