    Notes: Umbilical artery flow velocity waveforms were obtained using continuous wave Doppler ultrasound in 85 normal pregnancies (25 antepartum, 60 intrapartum) to examine the relation between fetal heart rate, end systolic/end diastolic ratio (A/B ratio) and resistance index (RI). Our results demonstrated a significant negative correlation between fetal heart rate, A/B ratio and RI (in the antepartum group r= -0·49, and in the labouring group r= -0·65). It is therefore important when performing mathematical analysis of umbilical artery flow velocity profiles to make a statistical allowance for fetal heart rate.

    Notes: A series of experiments investigating the quality of the signals obtained from intrauterine catheters was conducted in the labour rooms and laboratories.     Notes: Since there is some concern about the use of the Cardiff infusion pump in the automatic mode, experiments were devised to simulate some possible problems. The possibility of misleading information allowing overstimulation to occur was demonstrated. Even when the input signal was accurate there could, at least theoretically, be excessive stimulation. Some suggestions about future design and ways of correcting the problems are discussed.

    Notes: During plasmolysis of onion epidermal cells, the contracting protoplast remains connected to the cell wall by an intricate, branched system of plasma membrane (PM) ‘Hechtian strands’ which stain strongly with the fluorescent probe DiOC6. In addition, extensive regions of the cortical endoplasmic reticulum (ER) network remain anchored to the cell wall during plasmolysis and do not become incorporated into the contracting protoplast with the other cell organelles. These ER profiles become tightly encased by the PM as the latter contracts towards the centre of the cell. Thus, although the cortical ER is left outside the main protoplast body, it is nonetheless still bound by the PM of the cell. As well as being anchored to the wall, the cortical ER remains intimately linked with plasmodesmata and retains continuity between cells via the central desmotubules which become distended during plasmolysis. The PM also remains in close contact with the plasmodesmatal pore following plasmolysis. It is suggested that plasmodesmata, although sealed, may not be broken during plasmolysis, their substructure being preserved by continuity of both ER and PM through the plasmodesmatal pore. A structural model is presented which links the behaviour of PM, ER and plasmodesmata during plasmolysis.

    Notes: A growing body of evidence supports the use of fractals to approximate the heterogeneous structure of soil. Fractal models of transport processes in soil indicate that the fractal dimension and the upper limit to fractal scaling (denoted ξ) determine flow rates and scaling properties. A two-dimensional Monte Carlo simulation of soil aggregation is used to identify the key processes which may lead to fractal-like scaling in the soil matrix. A bonding law is developed which parameterizes the relative importance of chemical bonding to binding by microbial by-products and fungi. We investigate the sensitivity of the fractal dimension and ξ to the nature of the bonding law, and to aggregate fragmentation, initial particle size distribution and mechanical restructuring. Fractal-like structures result from the aggregation process. However, the measured fractal dimension is insensitive to the detailed form of the bonding law. The factor that most sensitively influences the fractal dimension is found to be mechanical restructuring such as would arise from the action of roots, soil fauna and natural weathering. By contrast, ξ is most sensitive to the bonding law. The results suggest that the fractal dimension and characteristic diameter of aggregates should be uncorrelated, and that increased binding by microbial by-products and fungi should produce larger, less dense, aggregates.

    Notes: Abstract.  Under a variety of conditions, the hyphal density within the expanding outer edge of growing fungal mycelia can be spatially heterogeneous or nearly uniform. We conduct an analysis of a system of reaction-diffusion equations used to model the growth of fungal mycelia and the subsequent development of macroscopic patterns produced by differing hyphal and hence biomass densities. Both local and global results are obtained using analytical and numerical techniques. The emphasis is on qualitative results, including the effects of changes in parameter values on the structure of the solution set.
