Notes: [Auszug] Minerals were located on dried filter paper curtains through the use of a 0-004 per cent solution of malachite green in nitrobenzene5. The stain was sensitive to as little as 1 jjLg of each mineral when used in the virtual absence of residual glycerol. Minerals were obvious as blue areas once the ...

Notes: Approximately 200 km from the mouth of the Fraser River, British Columbia, Canada, adult sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka, were gastrically implanted with radio transmitters without anaesthetic. Subsets of the transmitter implanted fish were also biopsied which included drawing blood from the caudal peduncle (3 ml), removal of gill tissue (0·03 g) and quantification of energetic status using a microwave fat meter. Several experiments were used to test the hypothesis that the biopsy had a negligible effect on the subsequent survival and migratory behaviour of transmitter implanted fish. In the first experiment, no difference was found in the survival (both 100%) or tag retention (both 100%) between the two treatment groups (transmitter implanted with and without biopsy) when fish were held in pens for 24 h in the marine environment. Similarly, in other experiments where fish were released to the ocean to resume their migratory journey, no statistical differences were found in the travel times of fish in the two treatment groups, or in the proportion of fish that passed in-river telemetry checkpoints. These results indicated that the handling and biopsy methods produced similar levels of mortality and tag retention as the telemetry treatment alone and that any changes in behaviour between the two treatment groups did not adversely affect migration time. Based upon the evidence provided from the biotelemetry of 〉300 adult sockeye salmon, it was felt that this general type of approach could be applicable to other fish species.

Notes: YBa2Cu3O7 films 2000–7500 A(ring) thick were deposited onto [100] LaAlO3 substrates using a novel single source metalorganic chemical vapor deposition technique. We have so far observed critical currents as high as 4×106 A/cm2 at 77 K, transition temperatures (Tc at R=0) as high as 91 K, and the 10 GHz microwave surface resistance Rs as low as 40 μΩ at 4.2 K and 400 μΩ at 77 K.

Notes: We report the apparently successful treatment of an endodermal sinus tumour. The patient became pregnant after unilateral oophorectomy and adjuvant chemotherapy, and was delivered of a normal female infant. The levels of serum alphafetoprotein, having been raised before treatment of the tumour, were within the normal range during pregnancy and undetectable before and afterwards.

Notes: Summary Maize and ryegrass seedlings (2.5 weeks old), the roots of which were dipped into 10-3M 14C-carboxyl-labeled D-leucine and 14C-ε-labeled D-lysine, readyly absorbed and converted or conjugated within 34 hr some 75–90% of the labeled compound supplied. The metabolic intermediates and products were generally similar for both maize and ryegrass. Radioactive intermediates from the carboxyllabeled D-leucine were L-leucine, N-malonyl-D-leucine (provisionally identified), and α-ketoisocaproic acid. Intermediates from ε-labeled D-lysine were numerous, with greater amounts and numbers detected in roots than in tops. Pipecolic acid was a major intermediate particularly in shoot tissue. Pathways of conversion appeared analogous to those for the L-isomer, and conversion may be by the usual L-configuration machinery, since the labeled L-isomer of the originally supplied 14C-D-amino acid was always found. How the 14C-D-amino acid gets to 14C-L-isomer is not known, but finding significant proportions of unlabeled D-alanine in plants treated with both the labeled L-leucine and D-lysine suggested that formation of the α-keto-acid analog and subsequent reamination was possibly an important route.

Notes: Summary Potential growth stimulation of two hosts by acid-tolerantAcaulospora laevis was tested in a soil adjusted to 5 pH levels from 5.0 to 7.7. By wet-sieving methods, the field-source inoculum was essentially a pure culture ofA. laevis spores. Upon harvest of sweetgum a completely different spore-type was found in large quantities;A. laevis spores were relatively few to non-existent. The results dramatically underscore the need for caution against relying solely on pre-trial identifications of inoculum spores or presuming that apparently single-species cultures/inoculum will remain pure throughout an experiment.

Notes: Summary In a continuing search for field sources of endomycorrhizal fungi that tolerate high levels of available phosphorus in soil, samples were obtained from long-established liberally fertilized hops (Humulus lupulus L.) and peppermint (Mentha piperita L.) fields. In hops fields, where extractable P (Bray) levels ranged from 21–196 ppm, spores of twoAcaulospora spp. and sixGlomus spp. were isolated. From peppermint fields with P levels of 44 to 244 ppm, spores of oneAcaulospora sp., fourGlomus spp. and oneGigaspora sp. were obtained. Vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi were found colonizing most roots to some extent, despite the very high fertility of several sites. Although percentages of colonization in hops tended to be low, ranging from 0 to 9.3%, colonizations in peppermint roots were considerably higher averaging 26.5% between the sampled fields, notwithstanding P levels as high as 244 ppm. Curiously, considerable external VAM hyphae were found adherent to or entangling roots in many cases, even where percentage of root length with internal VAM structures was low. The functional benefit, neutrality, or detriment to plants of such high-P tolerant species remains to be determined.

Notes: The mass spectra of hexanal, heptanal and nonanal variously labeled with deuterium confirm γ-hydrogen migration and β cleavage as the mechanism leading to [C2H4O]+· and [M — C2H4O]+·, although the data on the latter are complicated by contributions from other, related paths. In addition, they show that three other major primary decomposition products, [M — C2H4]+·, [M — H2O]+· and [C3H5O]+, all arise in large part by processes involving γ-hydrogen migration to the oxygen atom. The ethylene lost to yield the first of these products consists of the α and β methylene groups. The loss of ethylene most likely occurs by way of a cyclobutanol intermediate, which, via alternative reaction paths, may well contribute to the yields of the other two products as well. These findings further extend the range of parallelism between photochemical and electron-impact-induced reactions.
