    Notizen: Specimens of hypertrophic scar tissue (n= 9). non-hypertrophic, flat scar tissue (n= 5) and control skin (n= 3) were obtained from eight adult females (aged 22–56) and three adult males (aged 22–59). The specimens were studied histologically and immunohistochemically for vasoactive intestinal polypeptide, neuropeptide Y, calcitonin gene-related peptide, substance P, somatostatin, [Met]enkephalin, [Leu]enkephalin, and the enzyme dopamine β-hydroxylase. The non-hypertrophic scar tissues were not dissimilar to the control tissue, but contained connective tissue in bundles with a greater number of collagen fibres. In the hypertrophic scar tissue of some patients, the dermis contained adipose tissue displaced upwards from the hypodermis. The connective tissue contained densely packed collagen fibres and fibroblasts; this region was devoid of hair follicles, sweat glands and blood vessels, although they were observed in the region of loosely packed connective tissue.The normal skin contained all the neuropeptides studied, except somatostatin-, and dopamine β-hydroxylase-immunoreactive nerves, which were seen as single fibres or in nerve bundles, and were associated with blood vessels in the dermis. Neuropeptide Y-immunoreactive nerves were found in the arrector pili muscle, and neuropeptide Y-, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide-, calcitonin gene-related peptide-, [Met]enkephalin- and dopamine β-hydroxylase-containing nerves were found within sweat glands. In patients with flat, non-hypertrophic scar tissue, neuropeptides and dopamine β- hydroxylase-containing nerves were absent. In patients with hypertrophic scars, the density of neuropeptide Y-, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide-, substance P-, calcitonin gene-related peptide- and dopamine β-hydroxylase-immunoreactive nerves was greater in the dermis when compared with controls. They were found at the base of the epidermis, around blood vessels, and in sweat and sebaceous glands. Only substance P-immunoreactive nerves penetrated the densely packed collagen and fibroblast matrix, whereas neuropeptide Y-, calcitonin gene-related peptide-, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide- and dopamine β-hydroxylase-containing nerves were found in the loosely packed connective tissue. [Met]enkephalin-, [Leu]enkephalin- and somatostatin-immunoreactive nerves were rarely seen in all three groups of patients.In conclusion, neuropeptide-containing nerves appear to be present in patients with painful, hypersensitive, hypertrophic scars, but absent in flat, insensitive, non-hypertrophic scars.

    Notizen: Summary The distribution of substance P (SP)-, somatostatin (SOM)-, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP)- and met-enkephalin (mENK)-immunoreactive nerve fibres and cell bodies has been studied in the gastrointestinal tract, lateral blood vessel (heart) and segmental ganglia of the leech (Hirudo medicinalis). In the crop and intestine, there was a sparse distribution of VIP-, SP-, SOM- and mENK-immunoreactive nerves, while in the intestine, a dense network of SP-, a moderate network of SOM-, and a sparse distribution of mENK- and VIP-immunoreactive nerve fibres was seen. SP-, SOM- and VIP-immunoreactive nerve cell bodies were found in all the gut regions studied, the greatest number being in the intestine. No mENK-containing cell bodies were seen in any region of the gastrointestinal tract. The heart contained a few SP-, SOM-, and VIP-immunoreactive nerve fibres, but no nerve cell bodies were found. Immunoreactive nerve cell bodies were also present in the segmentai ganglia. A typical midbody ganglion contained up to seven pairs of SP-containing neurones, four pairs of SOM-containing neurones, two pairs of VIP-containing neurones and one to three pairs of mENK-immunoreactive nerve cell bodies. The lateral pair of large SOM-immunoreactive nerve cell bodies is of similar size and correct position to the lateral N cells. One of the pairs of large SP-immunoreactive nerve cell bodies is probably identical to the Leydig cells. A tentative identification of other immunofluorescent nerve cells is attempted. Immunoreactive nerve fibres to all four peptides were distributed throughout the neuropil, those to SP being the most numerous.

    Notizen: Summary Gene expression can be activated by external oxidants which are reduced at the cell surface by plasma membrane electron transport. The signals generated in response to the plasma membrane electron transport include activation of proton release, internal calcium changes, and change in reductant/oxidant ratio in the cytosol. H2O2 generated in response to ligands which bind to plasma membrane receptors can also activate protein tyrosine kinases and gene expression. Inhibition of oxygen radical generation at the cell surface in response to the mitogen, phorbol myristate acetate by retinoic acid is consistent with a role for the plasma membrane electron transport as the source for H2O2 in Balb 3T3 cells. Agents which affect the binding of coenzyme Q to redox sites in the plasma membrane electron transport may increase formation of semiquinone radicals in the membrane which can be a source of oxygen radicals and H2O2. The generation of H2O2 by transformed cells indicates that oncogene product expression in the plasma membrane may also increase quinone-based oxygen radical generation.

    Notizen: Abstract A survey of 1592 lakes ( 〉4 ha and ≤ 2,000 ha) was conducted in Fall, 1984. The study area was three regions of the eastern United States (Northeast, Upper Midwest, and Southeast) expected to contain the most lakes with acid neutralizing capacity (ANC) ≤400 μeq/L. The design of the survey provides statistically reliable estimates of the number, location and chemical characteristics of lakes in the study area. Frequency distribution statistics are presented for pH, ANC, sulfate and organic anion. The highest percentages and numbers of acidic lakes occurred in Florida, the Adirondaks, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The highest percentages and numbers of lakes with high sulfate concentrations occurred in the Poconos/Catskills, Southern New England and Florida. The highest percentages and numbers of lakes with high organic anion concentrations occurred in Northeastern Minnesota, the Upper Great Lakes Area and Florida. The percentage of acidic lakes by sulfate concentration class revealed no discernable pattern across subregions. In contrast, the acidic lakes occur with the highest frequency in the lowest organic anion concentration class. The complex distribution of low ANC lakes cannot be explained simply by sulfate concentrations or organic acids.

    Notizen: Summary The ontogenesis of small intensely fluorescent (SIF) cells and the adrenergic nerve plexus is described in stretch preparations of the rabbit portal vein. On the 25 to 26th days of gestation there was a predominance of SIF cells (8 to 30 μm in diameter), but a few nerve fibres in bundles were also present. Each portal vein preparation contained 6 to 9 groups of cells. The distribution and number of SIF cells and nerve bundles remained constant until the 31st day of gestation at which stage the number of SIF cells had decreased, while the density of the nerve plexus had increased approximately 4-fold. The adult portal vein exhibited a dense adrenergic plexus, but SIF cells were absent from nine out of ten preparations.
