    Notes: Abstract The development of a low-temperature method of producing bioactive coatings for medical implants has been shown to bypass the problems associated with high temperature processing routes, in particular the appearance of amorphous phases and non-stoichiometric hydroxyapatite (HA), and delamination of the coating from the substrate. An electric field/aqueous solution technique for producing adherent, crack-free calcium phosphate coatings on titanium and stainless steel substrates is described. The characteristics of the coating are a function of electrode spacing, supersaturation, temperature and current and voltage conditions. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) characterized the surface morphology of the coatings, which were shown to be HA. The possibility of producing a coating of carbonate-substituted HA having the same chemical composition as bone apatite, and forming at physiological temperatures, has also been demonstrated. The size of the microstructure decreased and the morphology changed as the carbonate ion concentration in the calcium and phosphate ion solution increased. © 1999 Kluwer Academic Publishers

    Notes: Abstract Ceramics containing zirconia exhibit increased fracture toughness because of the transformation mechanism. Because the acoustic microscope yields contrast at regions of differing elastic properties, it is possible to obtain unique information from these regions. Acoustic micrographs of phase-transformed regions surrounding Vickers indentations showed contrast within grains. Radial cracks were strongly visible, while up to five types of line contrast have been imaged. Much of the contrast in the acoustic micrographs is interpreted in terms of the interaction between Rayleigh waves and the microstructure of the zirconia ceramic. Line-contrast types A and B are accounted for in the literature while types C–E are new.

    Notes: Abstract The hardness behaviour of four partially stabilized zirconias has been examined as a function of load and temperature. For all materials, it was found that as the load was decreased the hardness increased, by up to 50%. However, a further reduction in load caused a drastic reduction in hardness. The degree of this near-surface softening could be correlated to the proportion of tetragonal phase present. As the temperature of indentation was increased the hardness decreased. Irrespective of alloying and ageing, the hardness values tended towards the same value at the eutectoid temperature.

    Notes: A biomaterial composite was formed by the room-temperature precipitation of calcium phosphate (in the form of brushite) on to collagen. It was found that the addition of 1 mM O-phosphoserine (Ser P) causes the morphology of the brushite crystals to change from large plates to small needles. An increase in the surface coverage and weight fraction of brushite incorporated into the collagen was observed. The mechanical properties of this composite were tested in the wet state. The ultimate tensile strength (UTS) was 45 MPa compared with 34 MPa for the wet collagen. Osteoblastic differentiation was promoted on the surface of the material and new bone formed.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of chemical environment (a homologous series ofn-alcohols) on the near-surface hardness and wear behaviour of two glass-bonded ceramics has been investigated. A change by upto a factor of two in both these parameters may be observed, with a good correlation between them. The indentation fracture behaviour of one material was also studied, and the environmental dependence of crack length suggests a slow crack-growth mechanism. The results show that the near-surface mechanical properties of ceramics may be modified by environmental means.

    Notes: Abstract The wear behaviour of a number of engineering ceramics sliding against polyethyleneterephthalate (PET) has been examined. Microscopical examination of the worn surfaces has shown a wide distribution of size of grooves, from 50 nm to 1 μm. The smaller grooves seem to be made by anatase particles in the PET sheet. The larger grooves are made by particles ejected from the samples' surfaces by a fatigue mechanism. By relating the hardness of the engineering ceramics at a scale appropriate to the measured wear rates, some degree of agreement found. Further, it was found that the near-surface hardness of all the materials was lower than the macroscopic hardness values: the sole exception was anatase. Although the macroscopic hardness values of anatase were much lower than the alumina-based ceramics, the near-surface hardness values became relatively greater. In this way, what was originally thought to be a “soft” ceramic can now abrade a nominally “harder” one. The wear of the carbides is thought to be by an oxidation-assisted process.
