Notes: We present measurements and analysis of high-quality photoluminescence (PL) data from strained In0.13Ga0.87As quantum wells confined by unstrained GaAs barriers. Data were obtained from low temperature to room temperature on peak positions, intensities, and linewidth. The latter exhibits an unusual minimum at 31 K consistent with defect binding of excitons and one monolayer fluctuations in well size. The high-temperature linewidth agrees with that expected for phonon scattering. Peak positions show excellent agreement with a Kronig–Penny model augmented by a variational calculation of the n=1 bound-state energy of the heavy-hole exciton.

Notes: A high-energy (up to 28 keV) neutral molecular beam gun has been developed and put into routine use that takes advantage of the autoneutralization properties of the sulfur hexafluoride anion for the production of high-energy sulfur hexafluoride neutral molecules. The anions are produced in an electron-capture source, accelerated, and focused in a lens assembly designed to minimize residence time, allowed to drift at their terminal velocity for a suitable distance during which up to 30% auto-eject an electron, and all remaining charged particles are electrostatically skimmed, resulting in a focused neutral beam. Rasterable neutral beams focused to a 5-mm spot size up to 3 m from the source have been produced with beam currents up to 40 pA equivalent. Spot sizes of 1 mm can be produced with intensity levels of a few picoamperes equivalent.

Notes: SIMION PC/PS2 4.02 is a personal computer program for designing and analyzing charged particle (ions and electrons) lenses, ion transport systems, and various types of mass spectrometers and surface probes that utilize charged particles. The modification of an existing design or the generation of a completely new one is performed interactively with a graphics screen and mouse. Once the geometry has been defined, the operating conditions (electrode voltages and magnetic field configuration) can be quickly changed and the resultant fields viewed in several different 2D and 3D modes. The trajectories of charged particles moving in these fields are calculated utilizing sophisticated "look-ahead'' algorithms that dynamically control the time step to optimize speed and accuracy. A unique graphics display of the electrostatic fields and ion trajectories gives the user an intuitive, easily understood view of the performance characteristics. simion also includes a totally integrated capability for users to easily construct subprograms, which are automatically compiled and integrated into the main program, for defining and controlling all of the major functions of trajectory calculations. This makes it possible to model dynamic electric fields (e.g., rf), including ion-molecule collisions or neutralizations, etc. Operational experience with specific ion lenses designed with simion and tested in several different applications are discussed. SIMION PC/PS2 is available upon written request for the cost of distribution.

Notes: Abstract: The biosynthesis of brain intermediate filament proteins [neurofilament proteins and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFA)] was studied with cell-free systems containing either rat spinal cord polysomes (free polysomes or rough microsomes) and rabbit reticulocyte factors or wheat germ homogenate containing spinal cord messenger RNA. The products of translation were isoated by immunoaffinity chromatography and then analyzed by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2DGE) followed by fluorography. The free polysome population was found to synthesize two neurofilament proteins (MW 145K, p15.4, and MW 70K, pl 5.3) and three isomers of GFA (α, β, and γ) that differ in isoelectric point. Wheat germ homogenate containing messenger RNA extracted from free cord polysomes synthesized two proteins that comigrated with neurofilament protein standards at 145K 5.4 and 70K 5.3; these proteins were partially purified by neurofilament affinity chromatography. The wheat germ system also synthesized the α, β, and γ isomers of GFA as characterized by immunoaffinity chromatographic purification and comigration with standards in 2DGE analysis. Our data are consistent with the conclusion that synthesis of neurofilament proteins requires multiple messenger RNAs. Also, synthesis of intermediate filament proteins occurs in the free polysome population; detectable amounts of these proteins were not synthcsized by the rough microsomes.

Notes: Colchicine binding was used as a measure of the levels of microtubule protein (tubulin) in several regions of rabbit brain during postnatal development. All regions studied showed a decrease in tubulin per mg of total protein; however, each region showed an increase in total tubulin from 1 day of age to adulthood. The net change in tubulin during development coincided with a proliferation of dendrites (which are rich in microtubules) and a decrease in microtubules from spindle apparatus, axons and astrocytes. We suggest that the total amount of tubulin changes in response to demands of the maturing brain cell for microtubules with different functional roles.

Notes: Abstract— The possibility was considered that the sleep-like state seen after injection of short chain fatty acids salts into animals is a result of inhibition of the sodium-potassium activated ATPase. Tris salts of short chain fatty acids inhibited brain Na-K ATPase activity in vitro at concentrations similar to intravenous levels causing narcosis in vivo. The inhibition depended on the logarithm of the concentration of a given acid. The concentration of acid anion which caused 50 per cent inhibition of the enzyme system (I50) was determined for straight and branched chain acids with 4–12 carbon atoms per molecule. The log of I50 concentrations plotted against the number of carbon atoms in the molecule gave a straight line; the inhibitory capacity of an acid increased by a factor of 2·3 for each -CH2- added to the carbon chain.

Notes: The relative concentrations of microtubular protein (tubulin) in regions of rat brain were determined by taking advantage of its specific property of binding colchicine. In comparison with other tissues, all regions of the brain were rich in tubulin. The cerebral cortex, thalamus and hypothalamus had essentially the same concentration. The cerebellum and brain stem had a lower concentration (about 60 per cent of the cortical level). Although the functional significance of these differences is not clear, they may relate to two proposed functions of microtubules–cytoskeleton and cytoplasmic transport. The complex geometry of neurons and many glial cells with ramified processes must require extensive systems for maintaining shape and an active cytoplasmic transport.

Notes: : Eighty patients with untreated dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) were studied. The final diagnosis was made after completion of immunofluorescence (IF) studies of the skin, iodine provocation tests and gastrointestinal investigations. IgA deposits in the skin and the HLA-DRw3 B-cell alloantigen can be demonstrated in nearly all cases of DH. Positive iodine provocation test and gastrointestinal abnormalities are present in about 78% of the cases. For diagnostic purposes tissue typing and intestinal biopsy is of value in addition to IF studies of the skin.
