Notes: The dry matter and crude protein production of the perennial ryegrass varieties S24, S23, Premo, Houba, Barlenna, Melle and Sceempter Pasture at annual nitrogen application rates of 212, 425, 637 and 1062 kg ha−1 were studied for the years 1972–74 inclusive. The DM and CP response curves for the variety Melle were steeper than those for other varieties tested and levelled off at a higher N application rate. The results suggest that Melle is a variety with a genotype capahle of utilizing N more efficiently at higher rates than the other varieties tested.

Notes: —Using a simple apparatus designed to perfuse nervous tissue mini-slices retained on glass fibre filter discs, slices of adult (13 week) rat cerebral cortex and spinal cord were shown to release radioactive GABA and glycine, but not 2-amino-isobutyric acid, in response to increased potassium ion concentration of the perfusing medium. A major portion of this potassium-stimulated release was dependent upon the presence of calcium ions in the perfusing medium. Slices of cerebral cortex and spinal cord from rats of 1 day and 10 days postnatal age showed potassium-stimulated, calcium-dependent release of radioactive GABA and glycine respectively. These findings are consistent with other evidence that GABA and glycine are functioning as inhibitory transmitters in rats at least as soon as 1 day after birth.

Notes: D-Aspartate is accumulated by slices of adult rat cortex by a high affinity uptake which is abolished if the sodium ions in the incubation medium are replaced by choline. A small uptake of D-aspartate takes place if the sodium ions are replaced by lithium ions. It appears likely that D-aspartate shares the same transport system with L-aspartate, and that the uptake of D-aspartate is into the same osmotically-sensitive particles as those which accumulate L-aspartate. D-Aspartate is released from cerebral cortex slices by raised potassium concentrations, provided calcium is present in the perfusing buffer. Both D- and L-aspartate produce gross hyperactivity when injected intraperitoneally into immature rats.Radioactive D-aspartate may be very useful in examining the neurotransmitter role of the naturally- occurring L-aspartate e.g. in studies of the autoradiographic localization of high affinity L-aspartate accumulation, its main advantage being that, unlike L-aspartate, D-aspartate does not undergo rapid metabolism.

Notes: Abstract— High affinity uptake systems for GABA into slices of cerebral cortex and for glycine into slices of spinal cord have been demonstrated in rats of 1 and 10 days postnatal age and compared with the systems in tissue slices from adult rats. For both systems there was an increase in the maximal rate of uptake of the substrate with development. For glycine uptake there was no significant change in apparent Km during development, whereas there was a four-fold increase in the apparent Km for GABA uptake. There were some changes with development in the apparent substrate specificity of the two systems suggesting increased specificity with maturation. Bicuculline and strychnine, antagonists of the postsynaptic inhibitory actions of GABA and glycine, produced convulsions in 1-, 2- and 10-day-old rats following intraperitoneal injection of doses somewhat lower than those required to convulse adult rats. These findings are consistent with other evidence that glycine and GABA are functioning as inhibitory transmitters at least as soon as 1 day after birth.

Notes: Abstract— Of the amino acids found in the CNS of 10-day-old rats the concentration of glycine alone was significantly higher in the spinal cord than in all other regions. Spinal levels of glycine, cystathionine, isoleucine and lysine from 1- and 10-day-old rats did not differ significantly from adult values, whereas the levels of most other amino acids, including GABA, glutamate, glutamine and taurine, were higher in the young animals than in the adults. Aspartate was the only amino acid found in lower concentration in the spinal cord of young animals than in adult animals. These and other observations support the conclusion that glycine is used as an inhibitory transmitter in rat spinal cord early in postnatal life. There was a general decrease in the activity of serine hydroxymethyltransferase and a slight increase in the activity of glycine:2-oxoglutarate aminotransferase in the CNS during development. The activity of neither enzyme correlated on a regional basis with the glycine content. The high level of hydroxymethyltransferase activity in the cerebellum of 10-day-old rats suggests that the activity of this enzyme reflects cell growth rate.

Notes: Summary We compared the cost-effectiveness of general anaesthetic agents in adult and paediatric day surgery populations. We randomly assigned 1063 adult and 322 paediatric elective patients to one of four (adult) or two (paediatric) anaesthesia groups. Total costs were calculated from individual patient resource use to 7 days post discharge. Incremental cost-effectiveness ratios were expressed as cost per episode of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) avoided. In adults, variable secondary care costs were higher for propofol induction and propofol maintenance (propofol/propofol; p 〈 0.01) than other groups and lower in propofol induction and isoflurane maintenance (propofol/isoflurane; p 〈 0.01). In both studies, predischarge PONV was higher if sevoflurane/sevoflurane (p 〈 0.01) was used compared with use of propofol for induction. In both studies, there was no difference in postdischarge outcomes at Day 7. Sevoflurane/sevoflurane was more costly with higher PONV rates in both studies. In adults, the cost per extra episode of PONV avoided was £296 (propofol/propofol vs. propofol/ sevoflurane) and £333 (propofol/sevoflurane vs. propofol/isoflurane).

Notes: SUMMARY. The effects of a sewage effluent discharge into the River Cole, Birmingham, were determined by regular collections of water and biological samples from six comparable stations, one above and five below the sewage effluent. The effluent reduced the dissolved oxygen concentration and increased the ammonia, orthophosphate and BOD concentrations in the water. The effects were much more severe during the summer. The Chironomidae were very important constituents of the benthic macroinvertebrate community at the stations downstream of the effluent. Larval densities of over 30,000 m−2 were recorded. Eleven species were common and of these Chironomus riparius was the most tolerant. There was considerable variation in the seasonal incidence of the different species. Brillia longifurca was most abundant in the spring while Cricotopus bicinctus was most abundant in the summer. Brillia longifurca, Paratrichocladius rufiventris, Prodiamesa olivacea, Micropsectra atrofasciata and Eukiefferiella claripennis had three peaks in numbers of larvae during the year. The increase in the polluted state of the river in the summer resulted in changes in the chironomid populations. Some were suppressed, e.g. E. claripennis, while C. riparius extended its range and achieved maximum abundance further downstream during the summer.
