Notes: We studied 201 unrelated French Basque individuals for HLA and Bf polymorphisms. The haplotypes of eighty-seven of them were deduced from family studies. The results show the frequency of the Bf F1 allele (0.1393) which is the highest one currently reported. They confirm the high frequencies of HLA-Aw19.2 and B18 previously reported in that population and show that a whole haplotype with strong linkage disequilibria, namely Aw19.2, Cw5, B18, Bf F1, DRw3 is frequent. On the other hand, the gene frequency of Bf S is decreased (0.5497) as compared with the other European Caucasoïd populations, while a slight increase in the Bf F gene frequency (0.2960) appears. These results point out that it is of importance to consider the genetic background in choosing the population where linkage disequilibria are to be studied.

Notes: [Auszug] In September 1961, a suitcase containing a sum of money was stolen, and it was recovered on waste ground; its lid had been cut, probably with a sharp knife. A thorough examination revealed two very small brown-red stains, looking like blood, on the lid. A suspect arrested soon afterwards had a ...

Notes: [Auszug] As these modifications occur most often in the course of acute myelogenous leukaemias, and as there are strong reasons for believing that the alterations of the chromosomes observed in the leukaemias of this type also affect the erythroblasts, the blood group modifications are perhaps a result of a ...

Notes: [Auszug] We for our part have observed, following many authors, ABO modifications in various leukaemic patients2'3. We have also observed a decrease of inhibiting power of Gm factors in these diseases. Table 1 shows our results. We should point out, however, that these modifications are almost always ...

Notes: Summary Two hundred and one unrelated French Basque individuals were studied for HLA-A, B, C, DR and Bf polymorphisms. The results show that the Bf S0.7 (Bf S1) variant, which is known to be associated with HLA-Bw21, presents a highly significant linkage disequilibrium with a subtypic specificity, i.e., Bw50 (Δ=0.0123, ΔS=100%, P〈10−8). As neither Bf S0.7 variant nor Bw50 antigen is found in Mongoloid populations, it is suggested that in evolutionary terms, the Bf S0.7 mutation is a more recent event than the HLA-Bw21 split.

Notes: Abstract In vitro enzyme activities of glycolysis, pentose-phosphate pathway and dark CO2 fixation were assayed in batch cultures of heterotrophic Catharanthus roseus cells under various gassing rates and partial pressures of carbon dioxide. Detrimental effects of low pCO2 culture conditions on the growth characteristics could be linked to marked changes in levels of enzymes of primary metabolism during growth. The enzyme levels observed during the early stages of growth were found to be more stable when a constant pCO2 (20 mbar) was maintained and enabled exponential growth to be reached more rapidly. The importance of carbon dioxide as a “conditioning factor” of the culture medium is discussed.

Notes: Abstract In vitro secretion of antibodies to cytomegalovirus was investigated by analysis of peripheral blood mononuclear cell culture supernatants from subjects infected with cytomegalovirus. Patients with primary or recurrent cytomegalovirus infection showed transient in vitro cytomegalovirus-specific antibody secretion. A high proportion of patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus and seropositive for cytomegalivirus showed in vitro cytomegalovirus-specific antibody secretion. All peripheral blood mononuclear cell cultures from patients with symptomatic human immunodeficiency virus infection were found to secrete in vitro antibodies to cytomegalovirus, despite the fact that isolation of cytomegalovirus from some of these patients was not achieved. In human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients, in vitro secretion of anti-cytomegalovirus antibodies appeared to be persistent. In vitro cytomegalovirus-specific antibody secretion by peripheral blood lymphocytes probably reflects an in vitro cytomegalovirus-specific B cell activation. This new assay could be considered an interesting method for detecting both acute or chronic cytomegalovirus infection, with potential use in routine laboratory practice.
