    Notes: An assessment of the feasibility of installing the TEXT 2 MeV heavy-ion beam probe on the DIII-D tokamak has been completed. Detailed drawings of the machine cross section were imported into the CAD application AutoCAD. A set of programs written in AutoLisp were used to generate trajectories. Displays of the accessible cross section of the plasma, scan lines for the entire range of primary beam energy and injection angle ranges, and sample–volume dimensions can be rapidly generated. Because of the large deflection between the primary input beam and the emergent secondary beam, either the analyzer needs to be tracked over a ±20° angle or secondary poloidal deflector plates need to be installed at the exit port. Toroidal deflector plates will be installed at both the injection and exit ports to compensate for toroidal displacements and deflections. The sample volumes generated by this procedure are within a few centimeters of the locations derived from a full three-dimensional calculation.© 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A procedure is described for precision modeling of the views for imaging diagnostics monitoring tokamak internal components, particularly high heat flux divertor components. Such modeling is required to enable predictions of resolution and viewing angle for the available viewing locations. Since oblique views are typically expected for tokamak divertors, fully three-dimensional (3D) perspective imaging is required. A suite of matched 3D CAD, graphics and animation applications are used to provide a fast and flexible technique for reproducing these views. An analytic calculation of the resolution and viewing incidence angle is developed to validate the results of the modeling procedures. The tokamak physics experiment (TPX) diagnostics1 for infrared viewing are used as an example to demonstrate the implementation of the tools. As is generally the case in tokamak experiments, the available diagnostic locations for TPX are severely constrained by access limitations and the resulting images can be marginal in both resolution and viewing incidence angle. The procedures described here provide a complete design tool for in-vessel viewing, both for camera location and for identification of viewed surfaces. Additionally, these same tools can be used for the interpretation of the actual images obtained by the diagnostic cameras. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Wave absorption in the ISX-B tokamak [Phys. Rev. Lett. 44, 647 (1980)] at the second harmonic (ω=2ωce) of the electron-cyclotron frequency is reported. Measurements of the absorption of a wave polarized in the extraordinary mode and propagating perpendicular to the toroidal magnetic field are in agreement with computations.

    Notes: Abstract Background: In germ-cell tumours (GCT), there is continuing controversy over the relative merits of dose dense therapy (increased frequency over a given time) versus vertical intensification (increased dose per fraction). The value of using a cisplatin-based dose dense approach in the salvage setting has not been documented and in addition the role of methotrexate remains uncertain. This paper reviews results from our investigations of these issues. Patients and methods: Between 1987 and 1996, 65 patients with relapsing or refractory germ-cell tumour received weekly m-BOP (methotrexate, bleomycin, vincristine and cisplatin) as salvage therapy. Residual masses were excised if possible and patients progressing after this received cisplatin and ifosfamide based chemotherapy with or without high dose chemotherapy (HDCT) consolidation. Results: With a median follow-up of 33 months, 34% are progression free following m-BOP, 11% who had surgery for residual masses which showed viable cancers are progression free. A further 15% who progressed following m-BOP with or without surgery were rendered progression free by third-line therapy. Conclusions: The use of m-BOP as second line therapy with deferment of cisplatin and ifosfamide based treatment to third line therapy with consolidation of third line responses with HDCT, leads to an overall progression-free survival of 60%. It does not appear that M-BOP prejudiced the response to third line therapy suggesting a lack of cross resistance. The potentially lower risk of leukaemia and infertility from m-BOP requires further evaluation.

    Notes: Summary Pregnant mice were exposed to ultrasound (continuous wave, 2 MHz) on Day 8 of gestation to determine effects on the progeny. The most significant finding was a decrease in mean uterine weight of the female progeny. The thresholds for this effect were 140 s at 0.5 W/cm2 and 60 s at 1 W/cm2, which were below the thresholds previously reported for other effects in mice. We suggest that this indicates a delay or impairment of maturation of the mice exposed in utero. Exposure of the dams to spatial average intensity of 1 W/cm2 for 40 and 60 s had no effect on body weight of the progeny, compared with sham-treated controls. In this experiment the body weights of progeny from sham-treated controls were significantly lower than those from untreated controls on Days 10, 17, and 25 of age. After exposure in utero to 0.5 W/cm2 for 180 s, statistically significant decreases in mean body weights of the neonates were observed, but only on Day 25 of age, in both sexes compared with sham-treated controls. At necropsy at Day 25 of age, neonatal organ weights relative to body weights were not significantly affected for the thymus in either sex or for the seminal vesicles and testes in comparison with sham-treated controls.

    Notes: This article reviews significant advances in understanding the basis for the magnitude of ultrasonic absorption in proteins and related biological materials. Carstensen and Schwan's accurate and extensive measurements on blood and hemoglobin solutions provided the initial experimental data; these were augmented by data from measurements on aqueous solutions of gelatin, bovine serum albumin, lysozyme, various polypeptides, and amino acids. The initial frequency range of 1-10 MHz; was expanded to 0.035-1000 MHz; temperature and pH dependences of absorption were studied. Theoretical approaches included consideration of the relative motion of blood cells in plasma, perturbation of water structure around macromolecules, solvation of charged entities, proton-transfer reactions, and helix-coil transitions.Proton-transfer reactions between amino and carboxylic groups and water proved to be largely responsible for the observed peaks in the pH dependence of absorption coefficient; the peaks occurred in the basic and acidic regions corresponding to the pKs for titration of these groups. Such reactions could not account for the magnitude of absorption at physiological pH because only histidine titrated in this range. Extensive analysis, using relaxation theory, and, measurements have shown that the proton transfer reaction between the imidazole group of histidine and hydrogen phosphate ion (in solution) provides sufficient volume change for significant ultrasonic absorption at physiological pH. Excellent agreement between theory and experiment was found with the peptide bacitracin in phosphate buffer solutions. By generalizing these results to the case of a protein, Slutsky et al estimated maximum values of frequency-dependent absorption coefficients for “typical tissue” and found them to be correct to order of magnitude, even exceeding observed values in soft tissues in some instances, instead of being far too small as was always the case in the past. Thus, in principle, adjustment of parameters, such as pK values, could bring theory and experiment into agreement for the first time.
