    Notes: Abstract The concept of a shock tunnel with gaseous detonation driver is discussed. A detonation driver presents an alternative to a free-piston driver because comparable values of high enthalpy can be attained, however, without the fast movement of a heavy piston. Wave diagrams, pressure and temperature distributions are presented. Finally, first experimental results are given.

    Notes: Abstract A diffusion equation including source terms, representing randomly distributed sources and sinks is considered. For quasilinear growth rates the eigenvalue problem is equivalent to that of the quantum mechanical motion of electrons in random fields. Correspondingly there exist localized and extended density distributions dependent on the statistics of the random field and on the dimension of the space. Besides applications in physics (nonequilibrium processes in pumped disordered solid materials) a new evolution model is discussed which considers evolution as hill climbing in a random landscape.

    Notes: Abstract Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) is an established technique for the detection of long-lived radionuclides at environmental levels. At LLNL, planned facility upgrades and advances in detection techniques are allowing us to explore the applicability of AMS to isotopes not previously pursued. One such isotope is99Tc. We have performed a number of preliminary tests to examine the technical feasibility of AMS for the detection of99Tc. The questions addressed were negative ion production in the cesium sputter source, transport efficiency for the ions through the spectrometer, and detection efficiency for99Tc ions after the spectrometer. Based on the positive results of these tests, we have begun to develo measurement protocol.

    Notes: Abstract A complete analysis of the transfer dynamics in an asymmetric nonlinear dimer model with different cubic site polarizations is given. The analysis is performed for both the dynamics of the full density matrix on the Bloch sphere (location of fixed points, bifurcation in dependence on the polarization strength) and of the reduced space of the occupation difference using a potential function. For a time dependent harmonic perturbation the appearance of chaotic transfer regimes near a homoclinic structure on the Bloch sphere is demonstrated. A comparison with spin models is performed. It is shown that the chaotic regime corresponds to chaotic motion in a classical spin model witha−S z 2 nonlinearity and an external magnetic field having its constant and time dependent parts in the same direction.

    Notes: Abstract A classification of quantum systems into three categories, type I, II and III, is proposed. The classification is based on the degree of sensitivity upon initial conditions, and the appearance of chaos. The quantum dynamics of type I systems is quasi periodic displaying no exponential sensitivity. They arise, e.g., as the quantized versions of classical chaotic systems. Type II systems are obtained when classical and quantum degrees of freedom are coupled. Such systems arise naturally in a dynamic extension of the first step of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, and are of particular importance to molecular and solid state physics. Type II systems can show exponential sensitivity in the quantum subsystem. Type III systems are fully quantized systems which show exponential sensitivity in the quantum dynamics. No example of a type III system is currently established. This paper presents a detailed discussion of a type II quantum chaotic system which models a coupled electronic-vibronic system. It is argued that type II systems are of importance for any field systems (not necessarily quantum) that couple to classical degrees of freedom.

    Notes: Abstract The relations between the different stationary and nonstationary states of molecular excitations described by a nonlinear dimer model with cubic site polarization terms and the corresponding optical emission spectra are considered in detail. For the stationary states emission is explicitly calculated for both the symmetric case with equal optical coupling constants of both molecules constituting the dimer as well as the asymmetric case where one of the molecules is optically active only. The time-resolved emission from the nonstationary states is treated by using a quasistationary approximation based on slow transfer dynamics compared to the polarization. Of particular interest in the nonstationary case is the chaotic transfer regime induced by a harmonic perturbation. For the latter case the evolution of the spectrum from an ensemble of dimers spreading within the stochastic layer on the Bloch sphere is presented.

    Notes: Abstract The dynamical properties of exciton transfer coupled to polarization vibrations in a two site system are investigated in detail. A fixed point analysis of the full system of Bloch-oscillator equations representing the coupled excitonic-vibronic flow is performed. For overcritical polarization a bifurcation converting the stable bonding ground state to a hyperbolic unstable state which is basic to the dynamical properties of the model is obtained. The phase space of the system is generally of a mixed type: Above bifurcation chaos develops starting from the region of the hyperbolic state and spreading with increasing energy over the Bloch sphere leaving only islands of regular dynamics. The behaviour of the polarization oscillator accordingly changes from regular to chaotic.
