    Notes: Abstract: Changes in cerebral cortical adenine nucleotide and adenosine levels during 10-, 20-, or 40-min periods of four-vessel occlusion producing cerebral ischemia in rats and reperfusions of 10, 45, or 90 min were determined to evaluate the effects of ischemia duration on mitochondrial function. Substantial recovery was evident following 10 or 20 min of cerebral ischemia but not, however, after a 40-min period of ischemia. A secondary decline in the cortical levels of ATP became evident following 40 min of cerebral ischemia and 90 min of reperfusion. Longer periods of ischemia may be associated with a loss of adenosine, limiting the resynthesis of ATP during reperfusion. A separate group of rats, resuscitated with 100% O2, demonstrated a more rapid recovery of mitochondrial function compared with animals that received room air during reperfusion following 20 min of cerebral ischemia. No detrimental effects of 100% O2 were observed during the 90-min period of reperfusion, indicating that 100% O2 does not promote early mitochondrial dysfunction.

    Notes: The dietary effect of arachidonic acid (20:4n-6, AA) on the composition of the head and the body, and on the pigmentation of Japanese flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus (T. & S.), was studied by means of microbound diets. Increasing levels of this essential fatty acid produced higher growth and pigmentation success in juveniles after 45 days of feeding. The role played by AA in the composition of phosphatidylinositol and eicosanoid synthesis is discussed in relation to the normal function of the neural system and the production of hormones involved in the metamorphosis and pigmentation of flatfish.

    Notes: Emulsions with different content of (n-3) PUFA and vitamin A were used to enrich Artemia and examine the effect of these nutrients on pigmentation success in turbot, Scophthalmus maximus (L.). The best pigmentation rates were obtained using an overdose of vitamin A (500 000 IU L−1), but coincided with a high incidence of skeletal deformations. Higher growth and pigmentation rates were achieved by increasing the quantity of (n-3) PUFA oil in the emulsion. The use of (n-3) PUFA-deficient diet caused the highest occurrence of albinism as well as a cessation of metamorphosis.

    Notes: Diets reduced in methionine (Met) and with oxidized oil were formulated to induce visual deficiencies in Japanese flounder, Paralichthys alivaceus (T. & S.), in an attempt to link vision with pigmentation development. Even though Met-deficient diets have proved to be cataractogenic in salmonids, no cataracts were formed in flounder eye. However, both diets produced an abnormal morphology in the retinal pigment epithelium and the photoreceptor outer segments of the fish retina. The high presence of dead nuclei in the photoreceptor inner segment suggests a loss in the visual capability of fish fed these two diets, which produced lower pigmentation success than the control. A significant correlation was also found between pigmentation success and fatty acid composition (docosahexaenoic acid and arachidonic acid) of the head polar lipid fraction. The results suggest that a deficient intake of amino acids and fatty acids produces a change in retinal structure and composition, leading to reduced visual capability and suppression of the development of normal pigmentary pattern in flatfish.

    Notes: Abstract Experiments were conducted in order to observe the effect of five diets on the population development of the rotiferBrachionus plicatilis Müller under laboratory conditions. Diets were based on baker’s yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and the algaeTetraselmis suecica andIsochrysis galbana, mixed, or as simple diets. Growth rates, fecundity and biometric parameters were studied for 15 days. The cultures were divided in a logarithmic phase and a harvesting phase. Rotifers fed onTetraselmis, alone or mixed with yeast orIsochrysis, gave good performances with the best results in all the parameters studied. Average growth rates in all diets were similar during the exponential phase, with values ranging from 0.72 (Tetraselmis andTetraselmis + yeast) to 0.47 (yeast). During the harvesting phase there were high differences between diets, with rates highly reduced in the yeast-group (0.17) and good rates whenTetraselmis was ingested (0.65–0.51). This alga had a positive influence on the rotifers, increasing individual growth and fecundity.

    Notes: Abstract —The usefulness of microtremors as a geophysical exploration tool has been analyzed. This application is possible due to the relationship between the main resonance frequency of a given soil, obtained from the H/V spectral ratios of microtremors, its thickness and average shear velocity. We first measured the ambient noise at 33 sites and determined their main resonance frequency. Detailed geotechnical information was available for 23 of the sites, thereby allowing us to establish a quantitative relationship between the resonance frequency and the thickness of the soil, and indirectly between either of them and the shear velocity of the soil. The practical application of this relationship has revealed its usefulness in determining the surface structure of a valley with excellent accuracy, with an error of only 15% in the depths calculated. These errors are due to the simplification of the problem that this method implies: it requires that the shear velocity vary constantly with depth throughout the study region, which is evidently not always so, and that the input data themselves intrinsically have a certain degree of uncertainty. This method is therefore not valid when there is no mechanical contrast between the study soil and the underlying layer or when the shear velocity varies irregularly with depth in the study area.

    Notes: Abstract The use of cactus pear ( Opuntia ficus indica L.) to obtain a new natural liquid sweetener was studied. The juice of the fruit (16.5 ° Brix) was clarified with enzymes, treated with active carbon to take out the color and vacuum concentrated to obtain a 60 °Brix syrup or liquid sweetener. Physical and chemical characteristics determined included: aw; reducing sugars (as inverted sugar); glucose (%); ash content (%); sugar composition by TLC; OD (420 nm) and Y, x, y chromaticity coordinates; viscosity (cps) and density (g ml-1). Sensory analyses to determine the relative sweetness were also conducted. Cactus pear syrup contained 52.38% reducing sugar. The syrup had a pH of 4.31, a viscosity of 27.05 cps, an Aw of 0.83, a density of 1.2900 g ml-1, an acidity (as citric acid) of 0.74% and an ash content of 1.4%. Compared with traditional sweeteners such as fructose and glucose syrup, the acidity was greater than that of HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) of 0.035%, and the ash values were considered a little high compared to glucose syrup which is 1.0%; these disparities can be attributed to the different processing conditions employed. Sensory evaluation revealed the same relative sweetness for cactus pear syrup and glucose, but lower than fructose; cactus pear syrup had a relative sweetness value of 67 with respect to sucrose (100).
