    Notes: La0.67Ca0.33Mn1−xCuxO3 (x=0 and 0.15) epitaxial thin films were grown on the (100) LaAlO3 substrates, and the temperature dependence of their resistivity was measured in magnetic fields up to 12 T by a four-probe technique. We found that the competition between the ferromagnetic metallic (FM) and paramagnetic insulating (PI) phases plays an important role in the observed colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) effect. Based on a scenario that the doped manganites approximately consist of phase-separated FM and PI regions, a simple phenomenological model was proposed to describe the CMR effect. Using this model, we calculated the resistivity as functions of temperature and magnetic field. The model not only qualitatively accounts for some main features related to the CMR effect, but also quantitatively agrees with the experimental observations. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The irreversibility lines of Pr-doped Br2Sr2Ca1−xPrxCu2Oy single crystals have been studied systematically. It was found that for the Pr-doped samples as compared with the undoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2Oy the effective superconducting area shrinks, the irreversibility line Birr decreases, and the anisotropic parameter γ increases strongly due to Pr doping. It is evident that the substitution of Pr for Ca in the system effectively reduces the hole concentration on CuO2 layers to the underdoped state and destroys the Josephson coupling of the two superconducting regions of adjacent CuO2 layers. The vortex depinning is responsible for the irreversibility and the displacement value for vortex depinning is similar to that for vortex lattice melting, but with different physical meaning. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The Gd and oxygen doping effects on the Josephson coupling in Bi2Sr2Ca1−xGdxCu2O8+δ single crystals have been studied systematically. It was found that a pseudo-transition at temperature TcJ, attributed to the Josephson coupling between CuO2 layers, shifts dramatically to lower temperature with increasing magnetic field, and the temperature dependence of the pseudo-upper-critical-field HcJ associated with the coupling shows a clear upward curvature. For the Gd-doped as compared with the oxygen-doped crystal, the value of TcJ is smaller at the same carrier density, which implies that the substitution of Gd for Ca reduces the Josephson coupling more severely. The characteristics of the pseudo-transition associated with the Josephson coupling between CuO2 layers are different from those of the superconducting transition occurring in the CuO2 layers. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract The basic equations of the representation of plasticity at an interface crack by an inclined strip yield superdislocation model are derived. With a special combination of the material properties and small-scale yielding case, the problem is reduced to an algebraic equation in an unknown, the ratio of the plastic zone size. The structure of the ICBD C60 films are studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The electrical characteristics of the ICBD C60 films on silicon substrates are investigated by current-voltage (I–V) measurements. TheICBD C60/p-Si and C60/n-Si heterostructures show strong current rectification, which is analyzed using band theory.

    Notes: Abstract This paper reports on the results of the numerical simulation of the motion of solid spherical particles in shear Stokes flows. Using the completed double layer boundary element method (CDLBEM) via distributed computing under Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM), the effective viscosity of suspension has been calculated for a finite number of spheres in a cubic array, or in a random configuration. In the simulation presented here, the short range interactions via lubrication forces are also taken into account, via the range completer in the formulation, whenever the gap between two neighbouring particles is closer than a critical gap. The results for particles in a simple cubic array agree with the results of Nunan and Keller (1984) and Stoksian Dynamics of Brady et al. (1988). To evaluate the lubrication forces between particles in a random configuration, a critical gap of 0.2 of particle's radius is suggested and the results are tested against the experimental data of Thomas (1965) and empirical equation of Krieger-Dougherty (Krieger, 1972). Finally, the quasi-steady trajectories are obtained for time-varying configuration of 125 particles.

    Notes: Abstract This paper is concerned with a traction-based Completed Adjoint Double Layer Boundary Element Method to solve for the surface traction of a system of rigid particles embedded in an elastic matrix. The main feature of the method is a single layer representation of the displacement field, which leads to a system of second-kind integral equations for the traction field, the extreme eigenvalue of which could be deflated, allowing iterative solution strategies to be effectively applied. The method is therefore most suitable for large-scale simulations of particulate solids. The method is benchmarked against some known analytic solutions, including the difficult stress singularity problems at sharp edges. The effectiveness of the method in dealing with a large number of inclusions is also demonstrated with an elongational deformation problem involving up to 25 inclusions.
