Notizen: The design and construction of a novel capacitive probe array to directly measure the ionization growth in high-voltage discharges is presented. By optimizing the design geometry, the probe output is made to be dependent only on the variation of charge development or potential changes at the vicinity of the probe in the interelectrode space. A set of these probes was used in an experiment to allow the time and space development of a virtual anode to be directly observed.

Notizen: Observations of a vacuum spark discharge are presented using a coaxial line driver. A 120 ns, 1.5 Ω coaxial line is used to give peak discharges of 90 kA. The usual line spark gap is shorted out giving a new mode of operation. The discharge is initiated once the rising sinusoidal voltage is applied by focusing a Nd:YAG laser onto the cathode front surface, peak current is reached at 250 ns after this. Reproducible hot spot formation is observed at this time. Holographic interferometry combined with time and space resolved x-ray observations show emission from a dense anode plasma as well as from the dense plasma column in which hot spot forms at peak current.

Notizen: The design and construction of a millimeter size noninvasive capacitive probe array to investigate ionization growth phenomena in pulsed capillary discharges are presented. The probes estimated to be characterized by a time response better than 0.5 ns, with very good electric noise rejection. The probes have identified a fast ionization wave in the prebreakdown phase of a hollow cathode initiated fast pulsed capillary discharge. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The design of a fast multiframe holographic interferometry system for rapidly evolving transparent objects is described. Essential elements to the configuration are a multipulse laser, an electro-optic deflector (EOD), and a concave spherical mirror. The hologram, EOD and concave mirror are in a circle whose radius is the same as the spherical mirror. The different frames are superimposed on the same area of the hologram. On reconstruction separation of multiple images is achieved on the Fourier plane of a lens which is used to image the reconstruction of the hologram. The total number of optical components is kept to a minimum and only two of these are used in transmission. Due to the low component count the quality of interferograms obtained is very high.

Notizen: A two-frame Mach–Zender interferometer is used to investigate the dynamics of X pinches formed from two 10 μm aluminum wires at current levels of 100 kA. Particularly, the columns of plasma that form on the interelectrode axis of the X pinch are studied quantitatively. It is demonstrated that the plasma which forms these columns does not come solely from expansion of the corona from the limbs of the X pinch but rather predominantly from the crossing point region. The results suggest that the plasma column is indeed a jet which consists of several components. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Experimental observations of the plasma dynamics in a vacuum spark are presented which permit measurements of the electron density and temperature during a large part of the compression phase of the pinch. The vacuum spark is generated by a low-impedance pulse forming line with a maximum current in excess of 100 kA. The discharge is operated in the hybrid mode in a titanium plasma. A laser focused onto the cathode provides the preionizing source. Soft x-ray emission from the current sheath is observed with an x-ray framing camera well before maximum compression. These observations are compared with holographic interferograms, both showing the formation of an axisymmetric rhombic boundary to the plasma sheath. The temperature and density of both the sheath and the internal plasma are observed until the formation of hot spots at the time of maximum compression. The temperature evolution of the hot spots is presented, showing a repeatable behavior that depends on the axial position. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Experimental observations are presented of a vacuum spark driven by a low impedance pulse forming line delivering 100 kA to the load. A pulsed laser is used to form a preionizing plasma on the cathode. The combination of axial and radial optical streak camera observations, together with the time and space resolved soft x-ray emission, permit the evolution of the plasma dynamics, density and temperature to be measured. Three kinds of behavior are observed according to axial position. A close correlation is found between the x-ray and the optical emission, with the observation of micropinch formation. A discussion is presented in which the behavior of the vacuum spark under differing operating conditions is compared. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Comparative observations of the Vacuum Spark discharge are presented under differing electrical drive conditions but identical geometrical conditions. A 1.5 Ω 120 nsec, coaxial line is used to provide maximum currents to 90 kA. The line may be operated in the usual switched mode to give a rectangular voltage and current wave form, or in the Hybrid mode, in which case the voltage builds slowly until breakdown occurs. In both modes of operation the value of dI/dt is about 1×1012 A/sec. A Nd:YAG is focused onto either electrode to initiate the discharge. With the laser focused onto the anode a low-density plasma accompanied by intense electron beams is formed. With the laser focused on the cathode a much higher plasma density is observed in the gap, with the formation of a dense tight pinch close to the cathode, in which hot spots form at peak current. The Hybrid mode is favored for its reproducible behavior.

Notizen: A small Faraday cup of coaxial design for use in plasma physics experiments is presented. The construction permits an approximately 50-Ω geometry to be maintained, allowing direct coupling to coaxial cable. The detector rise time is less than 0.4 ns, and is designed for beam currents of between 0.1 and 100 A. The design is well screened to reject spurious electrical noise.

Notizen: The thickness dependence of the subgap optical absorption in plasma-deposited hydrogenated amorphous silicon is carefully studied by photothermal deflection spectroscopy. The deep-level defect concentration decays from the top surface into the bulk where it approaches the thermal equilibrium defect density. This defect profile is interpreted in terms of the annealing, during growth, of growth-induced surface defects. It is also shown that this defect profile is compatible with the known growth-temperature dependence of the defect density in amorphous silicon.
