Abstract The counterion of the anionic surfactant aerosol-OT (sodium bis-2-ethylhexylsulphosuccinate) was exchanged for Mg2+ in order to produce the surfactant Mg(AOT)2. With this surfactant we produced both reverse micelles and water-in-oil microemulsions. In this work we investigate the effect of change the nature of counterion on the hydration mechanism and dynamical properties of AOT microaggregates. To this aim the dielectric permittivity was measured by a frequency domain coaxial technique in the range 0.02–3 GHz, as a function of surfactant concentration and water content. A relaxation phenomenon has been observed whose behavior depends on surfactant hydration and is markedly affected by interparticle interactions. These results have been compared with those obtained for the corresponding NaAOT system, showing significant differences in dynamical properties and interparticle interactions.
