Notes: A standard rotational matrix method is described for determining the k-space components of photoelectrons emitted from a crystal surface, which is arbitrarily oriented with respect to the experimental frame. This simplifies the analysis of angle-resolved photoemission data from a crystal surface not aligned to the experimental chamber axes.

Notes: Synchrotron-excited resonant-photoemission measurements at rare-earth 4d → 4f and transition-metal 3p → 3d thresholds have been carried out using a variety of complex cuprates and nickelates on stations 6.1 (grazing-incidence monochromator) and 6.2 (toroidal-grating monochromator) at the SRS CLRC Daresbury Laboratory. The systems studied are Nd2Ni1 − xCuxO4, La2 − xSrxNi1− yFeyO4 + δ and Bi2Sr2Ca1 − xYxCu2O8 + δ. A combination of EDC and constant-initial-state data is used to examine the 4f and 3d contributions to the valence-band density of states and their binding-energy positions relative to the Fermi energy. This allows the study of the valence states of the transition-metal ions and their modulation on doping. For La2 − xSrxNi1 − yFeyO4 + δ, this approach is used to infer a valence state of ≥ 3.0 for Fe. In the case of Bi2Sr2Ca1 − xYxCu2O8 + δ, the effect of Cu valence modulation on the 3p resonance is observed as x is varied. This is discussed in the light of controversy surrounding shifts in core-level photoemission with doping for this system.

Notes: Abstract Since the discovery of high-T c superconductor oxides in 1986, much research and development have been carried out, and much progress has been made. In the last ten years our efforts have been devoted to the development of materials technologies for these difficult materials, and remarkable progress has been made. This is a great contribution not only for application but also for fundamental research on high-T c superconductors. In this paper, we will present a review of applications of high-T c superconductors discovered in the last ten years. At present, it can be said that we are in the transition period from the period of growth to the period of specialization, looking for future applications of high-T c superconductivity.

Notes: Abstract The possibility that surfaces of YBa2Cu3O7-x may be intrinsically non-metallic is discussed in relation to recent photoemission data, which reveal an abnormally low density of states at the Fermi energy. A mechanism for electron localisation at the surface is presented, as well as alternative explanations for the photoemission data.

Notes: Abstract Ceramic model catalyst materials of general formula SrSn1−x Sb x O3 are synthesised by solid state reaction. X-ray diffraction shows the materials to be single phase over the composition range 0 ⩽x⩽0.085, with a second phase, identified as SrSb2O5, being produced at higher antimony doping levels. XPS, Auger electron spectroscopy and valence band photoemission show strong segregation of Sb to the surface of the material even within the single phase regime. The catalytic properties of the materials are examined using methanol oxidation as a test reaction. The activity and selectivity to formaldehyde production shown by these materials is found to be strongly correlated with the attainment of the bulk solubility limit of Sb in the SrSnO3 perovskite host.

Notes: Investigations were carried out on superconducting Ag/(Bi0.9Pb0.1)2.3Sr2.0Ca1.9Cu3.0O10+x (BSCCO) wires and tapes using high-spatial resolution x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Chemical maps at the interfacial region between the sheath and the superconducting core of the wire samples and also of the core of the tape after peeling were produced using the VG ESCASCOPE, which is capable of sub-10 μm resolution. Linescans across the Ag/BSCCO interface were produced using the SCIENTA ESCA 300 instrument, which combines high energy resolution with a lateral resolution of ∼25 μm. A series of heat-treated BSCCO pellets of the same composition as the wire core were also studied. Characterization by x-ray diffraction, vibrating sample magnetometry and energy-dispersive analysis by x-rays showed that the amounts of 2212 and 2223 phases present are a function of the number of heat treatments. Core-level photoemission studies using the SCIENTA showed changes in the Bi 4f and O 1s peak shapes, which correlate with the change in the proportion of the two phases.
