    Notes: Abstract  The effects of subthreshold transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) on simple and go/no-go reaction time (RT) tasks were studied in seven healthy volunteers. Subjects were asked to respond by abducting the thumb in a warning-imperative signal paradigm. TMS was randomly delivered at variable delays to the imperative signal (IS). Simple RT was significantly shortened when TMS was delivered to the left motor cortex and parietal regions simultaneously with IS. In the go/no-go paradigm, a similar trend to shorter RT was seen at a delay of 0 ms. Additionally, a significant shortening was observed at a delay of 90 ms with TMS over the contralateral motor cortex only. Movement-related potentials (MRPs) in the two paradigms showed a predominantly contralateral negativity approximately 80 ms preceding EMG onset. Our findings support the existence of two differentiated effects of TMS on RT: (1) one non-specific effect, evidenced in both the simple and go/no-go paradigms at a 0 ms delay, which can be at least partially explained by intersensory facilitation; and (2) a motor-specific effect of TMS, unveiled in the go/no-go paradigm at a 90 ms delay.

    Notes: Abstract  We previously isolated three chitin synthase genes (chsA, chsB, and chsC) from Aspergillus nidulans. In the present work, we describe the isolation and characterization of another chitin synthase gene, named chsD, from A. nidulans. Its deduced amino acid sequence shows 56.7% and 55.9% amino acid identity, respectively, with Cal1 of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Chs3 of Candida albicans. Disruption of chsD caused no defect in cell growth or morphology during the asexual cycle and caused no decrease in chitin content in hyphae. However, double disruption of chsA and chsD caused a remarkable decrease in the efficiency of conidia formation, while double disruption of chsC and chsD caused no defect. Thus it appears that chsA and chsD serve redundant functions in conidia formation.

    Notes: Using bipolar fine-wire electrodes, we examined the right and left longus colli (LC) and sternocleidomastoideus (StM) muscles electromyographically in ten healthy young adults. Action potentials were recorded on FM magnetic tape and each experiment was also videotaped. The head-neck motions were recorded using a special neck goniometer. The muscles were studied in sitting, supine, prone and lateral positions, both during free movements and against resistance. There was complete inactivity in both muscles in relaxed sitting, normal breathing, deep expiration, and wet and dry swallowing. There was very marked synchronous EMG activity of the LC and StM muscles during resisted forward flexion, marked activity during neck flexion against head weight in the supine position, and during resisted right and left side-bending. Variable activity was found in both muscles during deep breathing, coughing, forceful blowing, loading on top of the head, resisted backward extension, neck holding against head weight in the prone position and in twisting movements downwards and upwards. During free flexion-extension movements, LC and StM act synchronously. During free lateral bending they work homolaterally, but during free rotation to the right, the right LC works with the left StM and vice versa.

    Notes: In Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectra resulting from the signals detected with a single pair of detection plates (i.e., real-time-domain signals), the foldback of spectral information about the Nyquist frequency occurs. In heterodyne mode FT-ICR mass spectrometry, using quadrature reference signals, a complex ICR signal consisting of two quadrature reference signals, a complex ICR signal consisting of two quadrature signal components can be acquired easily. By Fourier transform of the signal, the reflection of peaks about the Nyquist frequency in the frequency-domain spectrum can be eliminated. As a result, the available bandwidth of the spectrum is doubled. Validity of this quadrature heterodyne method is confirmed by the experimentally obtained spectrum of Xe+ ions.
