Notes: Summary. In a series of 500 consecutive deliveries there were 35 non-rotational forceps deliveries for delay in the second stage of labour. There was no statistically significant difference in the frequency of resuscitations in this group compared with that in 329 spontaneous vertex deliveries. It is concluded that a paediatrician need not be called routinely to these forceps deliveries when there is no evidence of fetal distress.

Notes: Onsager's reciprocity relations have been applied to the motion of a planar interface in a phase transformation in a two-component system, in order to provide a test of kinetic models of alloy solidification. Although applicable to such models in general, Onsager's relations yield no information for a subclass of models in which the thermodynamic driving forces are linearly dependent to first order, as is the case for several models of alloy solidification including the continuous growth model (CGM) of Aziz and Kaplan. As a consequence, experimental tests will likely be required to distinguish between these models. If the CGM is generalized to include diffusion in the growing phase, Onsager's relations are applicable under some circumstances.

Notes: A number of theories have been developed for the kinetics of steady-state interface motion during a phase transformation. One requirement of such theories is that they satisfy Onsager's reciprocity relations for coupled irreversible processes. We show how to apply Onsager's relations to a phase transformation at a moving planar interface in a two-component system. The appropriate pairs of thermodynamic forces and conjugate fluxes are determined and used to test two proposed theories for interface motion during solidification of binary alloys. It is shown that the continuous growth model "with solute drag'' of Aziz and Kaplan is inconsistent with Onsager's relations, but the continuous growth model "without solute drag'' is consistent with Onsager's relations.

Notes: A UHV compatible Mott polarization analyzer is described that employs electron accelerating voltages of ∼20 kV. The efficiency of the analyzer, ∼3×10−5, is competitive with those provided by other polarimeters. The present analyzer is considerably simpler and more compact than earlier designs and can be used to undertake energy- and angle-resolved polarization measurements with input beam currents below ∼10−14 A.

Notes: The stress state of heteroepitaxial film systems is examined using a boundary integral method together with boundary conditions that allow deflections at the substrate/film interface. It is found that for geometries that deviate from planar structures significant variations in surface strain and film energy arise. These calculations explain recent important experimental results for Ge growth on Si, including observations for Ge islands on Si that show the surface lattice constant can exceed the bulk Ge value, and observations that the preferred region for growth on terraced films is not necessarily at the steps. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Acid phosphatase and esterase cytochemistry performed on purified normal human T-cell populations showed that both methods produced distinctive localized dot patterns of reactivity in 60–70% of cells. By examination of rosette preparations formed with ox erythrocytes coated with IgM (EAM), with IgG (EAG), or anti-human κ and λ light chains, it was shown that this pattern of reactivity was largely restricted to small T lymphocytes possessing receptors for the Fc of IgG (Tμ cells). In addition, both B lymphocytes and T cells with receptors for the Fc of IgG (Tλ cells) were larger lymphocytes with more abundant cytoplasm and usually displayed scattered granular acid phosphatase activity; in esterase preparations both cell types were either negative or possessed similar scattered granular positivity. As compared with Tμ cells, Tγ cells were seen to form loose spontaneous rosettes with sheep erythrocytes. Combined esterase and acid phosphatase staining showed that both enzyme activities in the Tμ. cells are localized in the same area, and ultrastructural acid phosphatase cytochemistry established that this was in distinctive lysosomal structures. Tμ staining by both esterase and acid phosphatase cytochemistry was greatly reduced after rosetting with EAG, but not after rosette formation with EAM or sheep erythrocytes.

Notes: A new noninvasive method was used to evaluate gas exchange in 12 patients undergoing thoracotomy for a variety of surgical procedures. A plot of inspired oxygen partial pressure versus oxygen saturation was analysed to calculate the independent contribution of shunt and intermediate ventilation/perfusion ratio which occurs during general anaesthesia for thoracotomy. A model based on the inspired to arterial oxygen difference involving the shunt equation was used to show how the relationship between inspired oxygen partial pressure and oxygen saturation could be used to derive two parameters of oxygen exchange, the virtual shunt and an index of low ventilation/perfusion ratio. In all cases, there was a very good fit of the data to the model. Thoracotomy caused a mean increase in shunt from 13.8% to 20.8% and a worsening ventilation/perfusion ratio from 0.5 to 0.2, the magnitude of which depended on the underlying pathology. In two patients, the ventilation/perfusion ratio decreased to less than 0.1. The method enables the prediction of oxygen saturation at different inspired oxygen partial pressures and allows the two components of gas exchange to be isolated using simple routine measurements of inspired oxygen and pulse oximetry.
