    Notes: Background Leucocyte migration within inflammatory skin compartments in allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is the result of a sophisticated multi-step event where multiple molecules are involved.Objective Since non-antigen-specific mechanisms have been described as an early participant in elicitation of ACD, we investigated the kinetics of the expression of monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1/CCL2) and the type of infiltrating cells. We compared the time course production of MCP-1/CCL2 with connecting segment-1 (CS-1) fibronectin and thymus and activation-regulated chemokine (TARC/ CCL17) expression.Methods Biopsies from 10 individuals challenged in their back with the antigen responsible for their contact dermatitis and an irrelevant antigen were taken at different times and histology, immunohistochemistry for CS-1 fibronectin, TARC/CCL17, CD3, CD68, CXCR3, CCR4 and in situ hybridization for MCP-1/CCL2 were performed.Results At positive antigen stimulated sites expression of MCP-1/CCL2 by basal keratinocytes and isolated cells in dermis started at 10 h. CS-1 fibronectin and TARC/CCL17 expression by blood endothelial cells was found at 2 and 10 h, respectively. This was followed by dermal accumulation of mononuclear cells with a significant increase of CD3+ and CD68+cells. At 48 h, approximately 58% of infiltrating cells were CXCR3+, and 35% CCR4+.Conclusions We showed evidence of the fact that CS-1 fibronectin expression precedes the production of MCP-1/CCL2 and TARC/CCL17 in the skin of patients with ACD, suggesting that these molecules participate in the early complex process of migrating mononuclear cells during elicitation of ACD.

    Notes: Contests between matched pairs of sexually mature convict cichlids Archocentrus nigrofasciatus were staged to determine if size alone affected the ways in which the males fought. Both small and large contests began with a period of visual displays. As fights progressed, displays diminished, and were replaced by more escalated behaviours. Small and large contests were also of similar duration. Despite these consistencies with sequential assessment, large and small contests were not entirely alike. For example, large males engaged in more lateral displays and were slower to escalate than small males. Small males displayed less and escalated to biting sooner than large males. Two possible explanations are suggested for these contrasts in contest structure: absolute opponent size and differences in the males’ ages coupled with differences in experience.

    Notes: Abstract  Fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) analysis is commonly used by soil scientists as a sole method for identifying soil bacteria. We observed discrepancies with this method for identifying certain species of bacteria. Therefore, we used carbon substrate oxidation patterns (BIOLOG) and some simple physical and chemical tests to determine the extent of these discrepancies. Identification with FAME profiles gave false positives for Arthrobacter globiformis, Micrococcus kristinae, and M. luteus, and identification with BIOLOG patterns gave a false positive identification for A. globiformis. A visual check and Gram stain are recommended when FAME analysis identifies soil isolates as M. kristinae or M. luteus, and an additional spore formation test is recommended when FAME and BIOLOG analyses identify isolates as A. globiformis.

    Notes: Abstract Choledochal cyst presenting during pregnancy is a rare condition, associated with potentially life-threatening complications for both the mother and developing fetus. Clinical symptoms are nonspecific, and radiographic evaluation is complicated by the presence of the gravid uterus. The authors describe a 34-year-old pregnant female presenting in the third trimester with obstructive jaundice and a right upper quadrant mass. Multiplanar and multisequence imaging with MR established the antepartum diagnosis of choledochal cyst, avoiding the use of ionizing radiation during pregnancy.

    Notes: Abstract The research reported herein involves the study of the steady state and transient motion of a system consisting of an incompressible, Newtonian fluid in an annulus between two concentric, rotating, rigid spheres. The primary purpose of the research is to study the use of an approximate analytical method for analyzing the transient motion of the fluid in the annulus and the spheres which are started suddenly due to the action of prescribed torques. The problems include cases where: (a) one (or both) spheres rotate with prescribed constant angular velocities and (b) one sphere rotates due to the action of an applied constant or impulsive torque. In this research, the coupled solid and fluid equations of motion are linearized by employing the perturbation technique. The meridional dependence in these equations is removed by expanding the dependent variables in a series of Gegenbauer functions with variable coefficients and employing the orthogonality property of these functions. The equations for the variable coefficients are solved by separation of variables and Laplace transform methods. Results for the stream function, circumferential function, angular velocity of the spheres and torque coefficient are presented as a function of time for various values of the dimensionless system parameters.
