Notes: Abstract Thymectomy performed on adult animals 6 months or more before infection withMycobacterium tuberculosis considerably reduces resistance to tuberculous infection; the longer the time after the operation, the greater the decrease in resistance. Disturbances of immunity connected mainly with damage to thymus-dependent cells (depopulation of the thymus-dependent zones, a decrease in the tuberculin sensitivity of the skin and the cytotoxic action of lymphocytes on antigen-containing target cells).

Notes: Conclusions Some results from the mastery of the thermal hydrolysis section of the pilot plant using the HCl method are reported. The main characteristics typifying the operation of the atomizing reactor for the thermal hydrolysis of magnesium chloride and the absorption section for the regeneration of the HCl are considered. Evaluations of the corrosion resistance of the design materials and the protective coatings of individual parts, units, and elements of the pilot plant are given. The data obtained during the run-in period indicate the suitability of the first Soviet-made plant for the chemical beneficiation of magnesite and the feasibility of using it in an appropriate modification as a low-tonnage plant for producing a beneficiation product with a mass fraction of MgO〉98%. Moreover, the plant can be considered as the experimental base for improving the technology and equipment for the purpose of conversion to large industrial chemical beneficiation plants for magnesite. The beneficiation product is suitable for the production of periclase powders with a mass fraction of 98–99% of MgO destined for the production of refractories for heavy-duty use.

Notes: Conclusions Experimental work was carried out to obtain from bromine liquors of bischofite of the Volgograd deposits magnesium oxide, using low capacity industrial equipment for chemical purification of magnesite, including a recuperator, a tank-collector, a spray-reactor, a cyclone, an absorption column, spray traps, a vacuum pump, and a filter press. We worked out the parameters for the processes of boiling off the liquor, thermohydrolysis of the magnesium chloride, absorption of the hydrogen chloride with the production of hydrochloric acid, washing and leaching the hydrolytic magnesium oxide, and filtration of the resulting magnesium hydroxide. During the reprocessing of the liquor containing the bischofite, using this technology, without preliminary purification to remove boron and sulfates, we obtained magnesium hydroxide with a high purity level (98.5–99.5% MgO on the calcined weight). It is shown that the magnesium hydroxide thus obtained is a high-quality raw material for the production of fused and sintered periclase with a purity of 98–99.5% MgO. The technology of sintering, including carbonization of the magnesium hydroxide, hot palletizing without bond, and firing at moderate temperatures, ensures the production of densely sintered periclase. Tiles with inserts made from fused periclase of high purity with a clear anisotropic structure facilitate the casting of two heats through the gate valves. The results obtained can serve as the starting data for the development of specifications (TLZ) and planning the production of magnesium oxide from the debrominized bischofite liquors at the Volgograd site using the thermohydrolysis method. We need to solve the problem of the use of the 20% HCl that is obtained.

Notes: Conclusions A complex investigation was made of the substance composition of commercial brucite raw materials at the Kul'dursk deposits. We established the polymineral composition of the varities of brucite and the assessory (impurity) rocks. It is shown that the predominant mass of the mined raw material corresponds to a mixture of brucite of 2nd and 3rd grades. The macrophysical properties of the brucite and the commonest impurity rocks (calciphyr) on the whole are similar, which excludes the possibility of their effective visual separation. We confirmed the conclusions made by the Geological Services of the Bogdanovich Production Association for the Manufacture of Refractory Materials about the noncorrespondence of the technological sorts of brucites with the natural varieties. In connection with the increase in the concentration of CaO and SiO2, it is necessary to develop highly effective methods of obtaining monomineral brucite concentrate, specifying all-around use of this unique mineral raw material.

Notes: Conclusions Natural and caustic magnesite can be concentrated by chemical methods to an MgO content of 98%. An analysis of these methods showed that they are technically feasible and economically advantageous. The hydrochloric acid and ammonium methods of beneficiation give not only pure magnesia but also magnesia-based composition materials with a regulatable components proportion including materials in the MgO-CaO system. A high degree of homogenization of the components can be achieved in these processes without the use of mixing equipment. In the chemical beneficiation of magnesite the sinterability of the magnesia can be regulated to give high-density sintered powders with the required grain-size distribution. It will be necessary to expand research in the field of the chemical beneficiation of raw materials including magnesium-containing rocks, and to develop methods of producing composition materials and regulating the sinterability of pure oxides.

Notes: Conclusions The activation analysis of aluminosilicate materials for their Al2O3 and SiO2 concentrations and a selective analysis for the concentration of Al2O3 can be used with confidence for production control in the refractory industry. Ampoules of neutron sources with an activity of ∼1·107–3·107 neutrons/sec were used. These sources require the minimum amount of safety precautions to ensure biological protection. The rapidity of the activation analysis and the fact that the samples are more representative than those in the quantitative chemical methods makes it possible to recommend this method primarily for monitoring the quality of the raw material in the mines.

Notes: Conclusions The surface γ densimeter makes possible the operational and sufficiently precise determination of the apparent density of large refractory products. Radioisotope quality control is included in the technical specifications of the production of silica and aluminosilicate refractory concrete blocks and panels. The use of the γ densimeter for the technical control and grading of the finished product makes it possible to improve the quality of large refractories.
