Notes: The study objective was to determine the fuelwood harvesting rotation and magnitude of nutrient accumulation by the sodic tolerant species Dalbergia sissoo and Prosopis juliflora for the rehabilitation of sodic wastelands. Mean annual increment and current annual increment growth of these trees reached a peak in six-year-old stands. Leaves dominated the litter of these species and contained high concentrations of most nutrients. N, Ca, Mg, and Fe were present in larger concentrations than other nutrients. Organic carbon additions at harvest after six years averaged 16 Mg ha−1, while soil pH was reduced from 9.8 to 8.6. Exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP) values decreased 65 and 29% under P. juliflora and D. sissoo, respectively, after harvest. These tree species produced significant root spread and deep penetration and were able to rehabilitate sodic soil effectively.

Notes: Abstract Mössbauer absorption of Fe57 in synthetically grown crystals of FeS2 (marcasite) has been studied in ab and bc planes as a function of orientation of the crystal axes with respect to the unpolarised γ-ray beam. The analysis of peak intensity area ratios of the quadrupole split spectra yields the principal axis values, the asymmetry parameter, and the direction cosines of the efg with respect to the crystal axes.

Notes: Abstract Ten isolates of six species of ectomycorrhizal fungi were grown in vitro at nine concentrations of three sodium salts (NaCl, Na2SO4, Na3C6H5O7) for 4 weeks. Colony diamater, biomass and protein content of fungi were evaluated. Isolates of Pisolithus tinctorius and Suillus luteus were more tolerant of NaCl and Na2SO4 than of Na3C6H5O7. Fungi in the genera Cenococcum, Laccaria, and Thelephora were highly intolerant of Na3C6H5O7 and Na2SO4 in vitro. Biomass and protein content of fungi generally declined with increasing substrate salinity in solution culture. In situ ectomycorrhizal colonization by Laccara laccata and P. tinctorius and the dry weight of Pinus taeda seedlings were significantly reduced by 80 mM NaCl after 14 weeks. Only select ectomycorrhizal fungi appear capable of growth and symbiosis in saline soils.

Notes: Abstract Mössbauer spectroscopy is a useful technique for characterizing the valencies, electronic and magnetic states, coordination symmetries and site occupancies of the cation. The Mössbauer parameters of isomer shift and quadrupole splitting are useful to distinguish paramagnetic ferrous and ferric iron in several substances, while the internal magnetic field provides information on the crystallinity. In recent years artificial neural networks have shown to be a powerful technique to solve problems of pattern recognition of a mineral from its Mössbauer spectrum, Mössbauer parameters data bank, crystalline structure and magnetic phases of soil from Mössbauer parameters. A computer software named Mössbauer Effect Assistant has been developed. It uses learning vector quantization neural network linked to a Mössbauer data bank that contains Mössbauer parameters of isomer shift, quadrupole spliting, internal magnetic field and the references of the substances. The program identifies the substance under study and/or its crystalline structure when fed with experimental Mössbauer parameters. It can also list the references from the literature by feeding the name of the substance or the author of the publication. Typical application of Mössbauer Effect Assistant in iron-bearing materials Mössbauer spectroscopy is present in user friendly Microsoft Windows environment.

Notes: Abstract The application of Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, thermogravimetric analysis and PIXE in the characterization of the particulate matter in atmospheric aerosols in Metropolitan Region of Vitória (MRV), Brazil have been investigated. The main sources of particulate matter, natural, industrial and antropogenic from human activities, have been studied to identify its contribution in the atmospheric particles. During the years 1995 to 1999 samples of total suspended particles (TSP, Ø ≤ 100 μm) were collected from four points within MRV. The inhalable particles (PM10 Ø ≤ 10 μm) and sedimented particles (SP) were also collected from the same region. A receptor modeling was used for the identification of the source of particulate matter in the collected urban aerosol.

Notes: Abstract 57Fe and 151Eu Mössbauer spectroscopy as well as RF susceptibility measurements were applied to study the effects of Pr substitution either into the rare earth or into the Ba site in Eu1−x Pr x Ba2Cu3O7−δ and EuBa2−x Pr x Cu3O7−δ, respectively. Site mixing of Pr between the rare earth and Ba sites could be excluded by the utilization of 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy. It was found that there exists a correlation between the 151Eu isomer shift and the onset temperature of the superconducting transition independent of the location of Pr. RF susceptibility measurements provide an evidence for a difference in the magnetic moment of Pr substituted for the Eu or Ba sites. The obtained results can be explained by hole filling as the dominant effect of Pr substitution.

Notes: Abstract Mössbauer spectroscopy and X-ray diffractometry have been used to study Sm−Fe mixed oxides (with different Sm∶Fe atomic ratios) annealed at 550, 850, 1000 and 1250 °C. The room temperature Mössbauer spectra can be interpreted in terms of one, two or three sextets and in some cases by an additional doublet depending on the composition and the heat treatment. The sextets have been associated with SmFeO3 perovskite, Sm3Fe5O12 garnet and α-Fe2O3 hematite. These results are in agreement with those of X-ray diffractometric measurements, which give a clear, evidence of the presence of these phases.
