    Notes: A novel angular motion feedthrough to vacuum has been designed and implemented at the Large Plasma Device at UCLA. The mechanism is easy and inexpensive to build. If linear motion capability is added, then one can arbitrarily and precisely position a probe within a specific volume in a vacuum chamber. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Shear Alfvén waves are studied in the kinetic and inertial regimes. The waves are launched from an antenna which is on the order of the electron collisionless skin-depth, δ=c/ωpe, in size. The experiment is performed in the LArge Plasma Device, LAPD [W. Gekelman et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 62, 2875 (1991)] at the University of California, Los Angeles, using a new antenna design that modulates parallel plasma electron current. The plasma is 100 skin-depths in diameter and 3.6 Alfvén wavelengths long. The results include the calculation of the wave currents based on measurements of the wave magnetic field. Differences in the perpendicular phase velocity of the wave in the kinetic regime as compared to the inertial regime are also reported. Results generally compare favorably with predictions of a theory which includes collisional damping and kinetic electron dynamics with fluid ions. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Magnetic field-aligned structures in current, density, and temperature are common features of the auroral ionospheric plasma. These structures both generate and transform low frequency waves in the plasma. The results of laboratory studies of two processes involving magnetic field-aligned density depletions (striations) that play a role in auroral plasma dynamics are presented. The first process involves the spontaneous generation of density and magnetic fluctuations at the striation edge. The nature of the fluctuations depends upon the electron plasma beta. At high beta (greater than the electron to ion mass ratio, m/M) the drift Alfvén wave is excited. At lower beta the density and magnetic field fluctuations separate and the shear Alfvén wave dominates. This process creates an environment conducive to electron acceleration along the magnetic field when the striation size is on the order of the electron skin depth because the shear Alfvén wave then has a substantial field-aligned electric field. The second process is the direct conversion of electromagnetic whistler waves to electrostatic lower hybrid waves at the striation edge. This process provides a mechanism for concentrating lower hybrid wave energy in the vicinity of striations where it may play a role in electron and ion heating. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Experiments are performed in the Large Plasma Device (LaPD) [Gekelman et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 62, 2875 (1991)] at the University of California, Los Angeles to study the propagation of the shear Alfvén wave in a parallel gradient of the background magnetic field. The waves are excited by modulating a field-aligned electron current drawn to a disk antenna with a radius on the order of the electron skin-depth, δ=c/ωpe. The resulting shear waves have a nonzero parallel electric field and propagate both parallel and perpendicular to the background magnetic field. In this experiment, the wave is launched in a region where its frequency, ω equals one-half the local ion-cyclotron frequency, ωci and the local Alfvén speed, vA, is approximately equal to the electron thermal speed, v¯e. The wave propagates along a slowly decreasing background field to where ω=ωci and vA(approximate)v¯e/2. The wave thus propagates from a region where Landau damping is significant to where ion-cyclotron damping dominates. Detailed two dimensional measurements of the wave magnetic field morphology are presented. The measured wavelength decreases in accord with WKB solutions of a modified wave equation. Wave damping is also observed and dissipation by both ions and electrons is required in the WKB model to fit the data. Suppression of the damping via electrons in the model results in a predicted wave magnetic field amplitude twenty times larger at the ion-cyclotron resonance point than observed. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A neutral magnetic sheet, in which the current is carried mainly by the electrons, is set up in a laboratory plasma. By forcing the current through a thin slot, the ratio of the length to height t of the sheet may be varied; the current is observed to tear when t(approximately-greater-than)30. The structure of the magnetic islands and their associated currents is fully three dimensional, although a linear two-dimensional theory gives a very good estimate of the tearing mode growth time. Tearing is accompanied by the generation of significant Hall currents, and magnetic disturbances are observed to propagate at the whistler wave speed.

    Notes: The large plasma research device (LAPD), a large, linear plasma research device designed to study space plasma processes, has been constructed at UCLA over the past four years. The LAPD has a 0.5×0.5 m2 oxide-coated cathode as a source which produces a 10-m-long plasma column with densities up to the mid 1012/cm3 range. The linear machine is surrounded by a set of 68 magnet coils which can generate an axial magnetic field of up to 3000 G. The vacuum chamber has 128 radial ports to ensure excellent access for probes and antennas. An internal probe drive capable of moving a set of probes to any position within the plasma column is described in a companion paper. This machine is a scientific instrument in its own right and was designed to be versatile enough to study a large variety of phenomena. The techniques employed in the design and construction are sufficiently useful to be discussed here so that others can benefit from our experience.

    Notes: A CAMAC-based LSI microcomputer coupled to a VAX minicomputer with a high (200 kbyte/s) transfer rate network make possible real-time data processing and control of a data-intensive plasma physics experiment. The system is constructed out of reliable, commercially available components. Most of the network software is written in fortran and is easy to maintain and modify. A description of its four software layers and illustrations of the type of experiments it has been used on are presented.
