Notes: Summary:  V, D, and J gene segments rearrange at very different frequencies. As with most biological systems, there are multiple levels of control of V gene recombination frequency, and here we review some of the work from our laboratory that addresses these various control mechanisms. One of the important factors that affect non-random V gene rearrangement frequency is the natural heterogeneity in recombination signal sequences (RSSs). Not only does variation in the heptamer and nonamer affect rearrangement, but variation in the spacer can also dramatically affect recombination. However, there are clearly other factors which control V gene rearrangement, as revealed by the fact that genes with identical RSSs can rearrange at different frequencies in vivo. Some of these other influences most likely affect the earliest stages of control – the change from an inaccessible state to an accessible state. Transcription factors can play a role in inducing these changes. Rearrangement of many VκI genes can be induced in a non-lymphoid cell line after ectopic expression of E2A, while neighboring VκII and VκIII genes do not rearrange, demonstrating that at least one level of control of induction of accessibility occurs at the level of the individual gene. Also, changes in chromatin structure can affect accessibility and might influence individual V gene rearrangement frequency.

Notes: Summary 26 of both blind or partially blind children were subjected to equilibriometric tests. By way of a vestibular-ocular test they were given the Rotatory-Intensity-Damping test. During the tests the per and postrotatory nystagmus reactions were electronystagmographicly registrated. For the vestibular-spinal tests the Unterberger's stepping test with photographic registration of the body-sway in the Cranio-Corpo-Gram was used. In most of the children you could identify a definite per and postrotatory reaction in spite of considerable spontaneous reactions. The strong eyelid movements of these patients, the intensive spontaneous deviations and diminished corneo-retinal potential made precise judgement of the electronystagmogram difficult. Comparison between the blind and partially blind children enabled the differences to be objectified. Blind-born children have a higher spontaneous activity, slightly diminished per and postrotatory nystagmus reactions and a diminished body equilibrium. These results can be explained on one side by habituation and on the other side by efferent structures, which have an inhibitory effect on the vestibular input.

Description / Table of Contents: Reaction of Chlorosulfonyl Isocyanate with 1,3-DienesThe reaction of chlorosulfonyl isocyanate with 1,3-butadiene leads to a stable N-chlorosulfonyl-β-lactam 2 and, after hydrolysis, to 4-vinyl-2-azetidinone (3). On the other hand a number of alkyl-substituted 1,3-butadienes yield N-chlorosulfonyl-azetidinones, which are unstable in the presence of polar solvents and undergo rearrangement to 6-chlorosulfonyl-imino-δ3-dihydropyrans 7 as well as varying amounts of unsaturated N-chlorosulfonyl-δ-lactams 9 and/or unsaturated N-chlorosulfonyl carboxamides 8. Since the chlorosulfonyl group can be readily removed by hydrolysis, this reaction affords an easy route for the preparation of β-alkenyl-β-lactams and unsaturated δ-lactones.
