Notes: A study of the ultrastructural and gross organization of the kidney vascular supply of the fighting bull (Toro de Lidia)A study of the ultrastructural and gross organization of the morphologic architecture of the arteries and veins of the kidney of the fighting bull (Toro de Lidia) was carried out through the study of 30 kidneys. These organs were perfused with polyvinyl followed by digestion in hydrochloric acid. The blood vessels were then described and illustrated through gross and scanning electron microscopic photography. Special attention was given to the organization of the glomerular and stellate veins.

Notes: The teratogenic effect of alcohol on chick embryos has been confirmed by many investigators. However, how this occurs is unknown. The aim of this study was to establish a teratogenic pattern of alcohol effects, on the first stages of development in avians.Fertilized eggs were infused through the air space of the shell on day 0, with ethanol in concentrations of 20%, 40% and 60%. The control group was infused with 0.1 ml of NaCl at 0.9%. At a second stage, the eggs were treated on the 4th day of incubation, using the same method. In both groups the eggs were removed on the 11th day of incubation. The teratological manifestations that appeared more frequently were evisceration, haemorrhagic embryos, oedema, cranial deformities, lack of eyes, and umbilical hernia, showing every embryo a clear reduction in size and body weight.

Notes: The development of the cephalic region of rainbow trout in the 24th, 30th and 36th stages, corresponding to the table of development by Vernier (1969), was studied using light microscopy and SEM.The 24th stage shows a voluminous cephalic region as a principal feature. At this time, most components of this region have started their differentiation. The 30th stage can be considered as an intermediary phase in the embryonic formation, and it is characterized by the high degree of differentiation between the nervous system and the sense organs. In the 36th stage, the basic final shape of the embryo has been reached. The results of this study show that the differentiation of gill lamellae and the opening of the mouth takes place later than that moment described by other authors. This suggests that development between 30th and 36th stages is a critical survival period for rainbow trout, in which respiratory and digestive functions start.

Notes: Abstract A method for quantitative evaluation of pentachlorophenol (PCP) in sawdust has been developed. Pentachlorophenol is extracted from the solid matrix with 0.5 M sodium hydroxide and preconcentration was carried out using quinolin-8-ol immobilized on controlled pore glass. Determination was carried out by using liquid chromatography with detection at 240 nm. Recoveries were between 84 and 97% at 1–3 μg/g.

Notes: Summary The efficiency of ion chromatography columns packed with styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer containing quaternary ammonium groups to preconcentrate phenols at μg l−1 levels has been established. Retention is carried out in acidic medium based on non-polar interactions between the column and phenols. Pure acetonitrile was used for one step elution. Enrichment factors of at least 100 times are achieved. Regeneration of the column can easily be accomplished with a mixture of 60 mM nitric acid: methanol (1∶99). Recoveries from a river water sample for nine priority pollutant phenols were in the range 92–105%. Other retained organic substances do not disturb liquid chromatographic determination of the phenols studied.

Notes: The usefulness of the Kalman filter as an algorithm for calibration in a real system is shown. Results are compared with classical least squares and pure component calibration. The prediction of four priority pollutant chlorophenols in binary, ternary and quaternary mixtures was also carried out by Kalman filtering. The condition number, standard deviation and prediction error have been employed to choose the most suitable wavelength range. Comparison of the standard error of prediction in the validation set shows significant differences between the evaluated chlorophenols, the best results being obtained with Kalman multivariate calibration.

Notes: Abstract The influence of thermal discharges on thephytoplankton community from a coastal zone of theGulf of Mexico was evaluated through their structureand photosynthetic behaviour focusing on responses tochanges in light and temperature. Biological andphysicochemical parameters were measured over a periodof two years in an area with permanent hot waterdischarges from a thermoelectric plant. Thetemperature in the sampling area ranged from 23.5 to36 °C with differences between the coldest andthe hottest station from 5.3 to 9.2 °C.Photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) were reducedin the discharge area water column, due to turbulence. One hundred and one different taxa were identifiedwith a strong predominance of Diatoms. The chlorophylla concentration ranged from 0.3 to 6.1 μgL-1, with highest values of thephaeophytin:chlorophyll ratio found at the hottest station. The community structure did not show significativedifferences among sampling stations with respect totemperature variations. However, in the algalassemblages influenced by thermal discharges, it waspossible to observe alterations in the photosynthesisbehaviour. Phytoplankton response to short termphotosynthesis experiments was segregated according tocomposition and origin of microalgal assemblages.Samples with larger heterogeneous composition had moreconsistent oxygen production responses. Algalcommunities exposed to hot effluent showed differentdegrees of photosynthesis rate reduction, higher light requirements (〉500 μE m2 s-1)and lower temperature (25 °C) to achieve Pmaxthan algae sampled in sites without such exposure.

Notes: Summary A FIA method is proposed for the determination of non-ionic surfactants, applying spectrophotometric detection. The method is based on the formation of a “surfactant-K+-picrate” adduct and subsequent extraction into 1,2-dichloroethane. The method can handle samples containing large excesses of ionic and amphoteric surfactants, which are retained on ion-exchange columns inserted in the flow system. Beer's law is obeyed at 380 nm in the 0.02–1.2 mg·l−1 range for Triton-type non-ionic surfactants (X-100, X-405 and WR-1339). Relative standard deviation (n=10) is 0.3% at the 0.5 mg·l−1 level. The method has been applied to several samples and its applicability evaluated by ANOVA statistical comparison with two other methods.
