Notes: Expression of human mucin genes in normal kidney and renal cell carcinoma Aims: Human mucins are large O-glycoproteins expressed by epithelial cells. Mucins are thought to be implicated in cell protection, cell adhesion and signalling. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of the human mucin genes (MUC1–4, 5AC, 5B, 6–7) in normal kidney and renal cell carcinoma. Methods and results: We analysed by in-situ hybridization, immunohistochemistry and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) the expression of these genes in normal adult kidney (n=14) and renal cell carcinomas (n=29). MUC1, MUC3 and MUC6 were expressed both in normal kidney and in renal carcinomas. In normal kidney, MUC1 was expressed in the distal convoluted tubules and in collecting ducts, whereas MUC3 was restricted to the proximal tubules. MUC4 was strongly expressed in epithelial urothelial cells of pyelocalyceal cavities. MUC6 was only detected by RT-PCR. In renal carcinoma, we showed a heterogeneous expression of MUC1 and MUC3 with an over-expression of MUC3 in renal clear cell carcinoma. The level of MUC3 expression by in-situ hybridization was associated with the nuclear grade in clear cell carcinoma. Conclusions: This study is the first large series investigating human mucin gene expression in the kidney. MUC1, MUC3 and MUC6 are expressed in normal and tumour kidney. The over-expression of MUC3 in renal cell carcinomas favours its implication in renal tumorigenesis.

Notes: The effect of bruising on total phenols, total glycoal/kaloids (TGA), and ascorbic acid content of Katahdin potatoes was studied. Following bruising, tubers were stored at either 5° or 20°C for I, 3, 6, and I2 wk. Unbruised whole tubers served as controls and bruised halves were compared with unbruised halves. Both halves of bruised tubers were higher in phenols, TGA and lower in ascorbic acid than unbruised controls. Bruised halves contained significantly more phenols, TGA and less ascorbic acid than unbruised halves. Storage temperature did not affect ascorbic acid content but the greatest accumulation of phenols occurred at 5°C and the highest TGA at 20°C storage temperature. Cortex tissue was significantly lower in ascorbic acid than pith tissue.

Notes: This paper covers circuits and systems techniques for the construction of high reliabilitybiosensing and stimulation medical devices. Such microsystems are dedicated for interconnectionsthrough either the central or the peripheral nervous systems. Low-power high-reliability wirelesslinks are used to power up the implanted devices while data are exchanged bidirectionaly betweenthese implants and external controllers. A global view of main devices is given, case studies relatedto applications such as bladder control, intracortical monitoring and microstimulation are discussed, altogether with modeling, characterization, as well as microsystems assembly and packaging. Also, dedicated electrode arrays and their interfaces to tissues interfaces are summarized

Notes: Abstract An unusual case of neonatal bowel obstruction is presented. The patient had bilious vomiting and a tender left abdominal mass, which at operation proved to be an avulsed spleen adherent to the small bowel mesentery, with no signs of significant haemorrhage. Theories of events that led to this rare occurrence are discussed.

Notes: Summary Eosinophils from two patients with eosinophilic granuloma of bone (EGB) were studied by combined immunohistochemical and immuno-ultrastructural methods with antibodies directed against three eosinophil granule proteins: major basic protein, eosinophil cationic protein, and eosinophil peroxidase. Immunohistostaining showed the presence and distribution of large numbers of eosinophils in the granuloma. Immuno-ultrastructural methods showed alterations of eosinophil fine structure associated with some steps in the release of granule proteins. No granule extrusion was seen, but rather cationic proteins diffused within cytoplasmic tubulo-vesicular structures. Furthermore, the three granule proteins were found within phagolysosomes of surrounding macrophages, suggesting an interaction between eosinophils and phagocytic cells at the destructive stage of EGB.

Notes: Summary Three cases of splenic involvement in three different types of generalized mastocytosis (systemic mast cell disease) are reported. The macroscopic, histological and ultrastructural modifications of the spleen are described. Each case exhibited a different morphological pattern. Giemsa staining, fluorescence after acridine orange staining and naphthol ASD chloracetate esterase reaction are shown to be valuable for diagnosis. By comparison, immunohistochemistry seemed not to be very useful, because no specific antigens are expressed. These findings are compared to previously published cases. Their value for the diagnosis and the prognosis are discussed.

Notes: Summary We retrospectively analyzed overall survival and survival after progression in 91 patients with low-grade follicular lymphoma (LGFL). Histological subtype was B in 75 patients and C in 16 patients. Twelve patients with localized disease received involved-field radiotherapy; seven patients without bulky disease had no initial therapy. The remaining 72 patients received long-term chlorambucil (9 patients), MOPP or COPBleo (42 patients), or a CHOP-derived regimen (21 patients). Forty-two patients (46%) achieved a complete remission (CR) and 28 patients (31%) achieved a partial remission; 48 of these 70 patients relapsed or progressed. Nineteen of the other 21 patients with stable LGFL progressed. Two other patients failed to respond and rapidly died. Thirty-two of the 67 patients with progressive or relapsed LGFL have died. Median overall survival was 111 months. Age ≥70 years, male sex, B symptoms, histological subtype follicular mixed-cell NHL, tumor size ≥10 cm, number of extranodal sites of disease ≥2, pleural effusion, and Ann Arbor stage III or IV were found to adversely influence overall survival. Failure-free survival 〈 24 months, failure to achieve a CR after the progression, initial histological subtype follicular mixed cell, initial Ann Arbor stage III or IV, and initial tumoral size ≥10 cm were found to adversely influence survival after progression. Our results suggest that most prognostic factors for overall survival in LGFL are related to histological subtype or tumor burden. Some initial adverse prognostic factors for survival may be also associated with a poor survival after progression.

Notes: Abstract Erdheim-Chester disease is a distinctive pathological radiographic entity, most commonly characterised by a typical skeletal involvement resulting from histiocytic infiltration of the bone marrow. Although lung involvement is often absent, we report a case of diffuse infiltrative lung disease characterised by a wide-spread reticular pattern on high-resolution CT scans associated with cystic airspaces and mild honeycombing observed throughout both lungs. Interstitial infiltration with lipid-laden histiocytes was histologically confirmed by means of transbronchial biopsy.
