    Notes: Abstract: The squid giant axon and extruded axoplasm from the giant axon were used to study the capacity of axoplasm for phospholipid synthesis. Extruded axoplasm, suspended in chemically defined media, catalyzed the synthesis of phospholipids from all of the precursors tested. 32P-Labeled inorganic phosphate and γ-labeled ATP were actively incorporated into phosphatidylinositol phosphate, while [2-3H]myo-inositol and l-[3H(G)]serine were actively incorporated into phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidylserine, respectively. Though less well utilized, [2-3H]glycerol was incorporated into phosphatide acid, phosphatidylinositol, and triglyceride, and [methyl-3H]choline and [1-3H]ethanolamine were incorporated into phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine, respectively. Isolated squid giant axons were incubated in artificial seawater containing the above precursors. The axoplasm was extruded following the incubations. Although most of the product lipids were recovered in the sheath (composed of cortical axoplasm, axolemma, and surrounding satellite cells), significant amounts (4–20%) were present in the extruded axoplasm. With tritiated choline and myo-inositol, the major labeled phospholipids found in both the extruded axoplasm and the sheath were phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylinositol, respectively. With both glycerol and phosphate, phosphatidylethanolamine was a major labeled lipid in both axoplasm and sheath. These findings demonstrate that all classes of phospholipids are formed by endogenous synthetic enzymes in axoplasm. In addition, we feel that the different patterns of incorporation by intact axons and extruded axoplasm indicate that surrounding sheath cells contribute lipids to axoplasm. A comprehensive picture of axonal lipid metabolism should include axoplasmic synthesis and glial-axon transfer as pathways complementing the axonal transport of perikaryally formed lipids.

    Notes: A new 50 mm powder gun was used to reproduce and to extend the real-time observations of ultra-fast exothermic reactions in a Ni/Al powder mixture at the shock front. Shock profiles measured by a manganin gauge show that (1) the threshold pressure for reaction is about 14 GPa; (2) the initiation criteria based either on shock energy or melting are in contradiction with experimental evidence. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Experimental observation of wave-packet propagation in the ion cyclotron range of frequencies in a tokamak plasma is reported. Studies were carried out in the Caltech Research Tokamak [Phys. Fluids 23, 614 (1980)] in a pure hydrogen plasma and in a regime where fast-wave damping was sufficiently small to permit multiple toroidal transits of the wave packet. Waves were launched by exciting a small loop antenna with a short burst of radio-frequency current and were detected with shielded magnetic probes. Probe scans revealed a large increase in wave-packet amplitude at smaller minor radii, and the packet velocity was found to be independent of radial position. Measurement of the packet transit time yielded direct information about the wave group velocity. Packet velocity was investigated as a function of the fundamental excitation frequency, plasma density, and toroidal magnetic field. Results are compared with the predictions of a cold plasma model that includes a vacuum layer at the edge.

    Notes: Electron temperature fluctuations have been investigated in the edge region of the Caltech research tokamak [S. J. Zweben and R. W. Gould, Nucl. Fusion 25, 171 (1985)], and an upper limit to this fluctuation level was found at T˜e/Te (approximately-less-than)15%. This measurement, together with previous measurements of density and electric and magnetic field fluctuations, allows a unique comparison of the heat transport resulting from three basic turbulent mechanisms: (1) heat flux from the particle flux resulting from microscopic density and electric field fluctuations; (2) thermal conduction resulting from microscopic temperature and electric field fluctuations; and (3) thermal conduction resulting from microscopic magnetic field fluctuations. The measurements indicate that, in the edge regions, the electron heat transport caused by the measured turbulence-induced particle flux is comparable to or greater than that caused by the thermal conduction associated with the electron temperature and electric field fluctuations, and is significantly greater than that resulting from the measured magnetic fluctuations. This electron heat loss caused by the plasma turbulence is found to be an important electron energy loss mechanism in the edge regions.

    Notes: Plasma flow to an obstacle is examined using the two-fluid equations. In this model the obstacle is assumed to be a two-dimensional strip that extends to infinity in the y direction (slab geometry). An obstacle inserted into a magnetized plasma will cast a "shadow'' along the magnetic field lines. The natural collection length of such an obstacle is a measure of the length of its shadow. This study shows that in a typical fusion tokamak, where cs/Ωcid(very-much-less-than)1 (Ωci, cs are the ion cyclotron frequency and the ion acoustic speed, respectively, d is the half-width of the strip), the particle collection length of an obstacle can be approximated as L(parallel)=0.23csd2/ D⊥, if D⊥/ csd (very-much-less-than)1; or 0.30d, if D⊥/ csd (very-much-greater-than)1. For the cases examined in this study, the inclusion of the electron–ion collisional drag parallel to B0 changes the solution only by an insignificant amount.
