Description / Table of Contents:
Summary The rare gas concentrations and isotopic compositions were determined in the Khor Temiki aubrite. This meteorite contains large amounts of light trapped gases. They are located only in the fine grained matrix and not in the larger enstatite crystals. The trapped gas content of six grain size fractions of the matrix shows a strong anticorrelation with grain size. The concentration of the trapped gases in the finest fraction (3 microns) is six times higher than in the coarsest fraction (90 microns). Measurements on separated minerals prove that this is a true grain, size effect and not due to spurious enrichment of feldspar in the fine fractions. These results strongly suggest a surface effect. The implications of our results for the different theories on the origin and trapping mechanism of trapped gases are discussed.
Notes:
