Description / Table of Contents: Résumé.
Notes: Abstract. The clinical and functional outcome of ureteric division to the distal segment of a loop colostomy: the double-barrelled wet colostomy have been analysed. Methods: 13 patients (8 female and 5 male, age 37 to 72 years) underwent pelvic exenteration with double-barrelled wet colostomy. The primary tumour included endometrial (n = 6), rectal (n = 1), anal (n = 1), cervical (n = 2), prostatic (n = 1) and bladder (n = 2). Indications for pelvic exenteration were locally advanced disease, recurrence and severe radiation or surgical damage. Six patients had pre-existing colostomy, and three had a Bricker uretero-ileal diversion. The double-barrelled wet colostomy technique consisted in anastomosing both ureters to a colon segment 25 cm distal to the loop colostomy. There was no operative mortality. Complications included one urinary leak which closed with conservative management and one case of recurrent episodes of pyelonephritis which finally required nephrectomy. Intravenous urography in the remaining patients showed good flow through the ureters to the conduit with no reflux. Postoperative plasma electrolytes, urea and creatinine were normal from day seven onwards. Urodynamic studies in four patients showed efficient contraction of the colon conduit with pressure levels similar to those in the colon proximal to the colostomy. In five cases biopsies of the conduit were taken at 3 and 16 months; no dysplasias were found. Four patients died due to disease progression. The overall mean survival was 41.2 months. The remainder are currently disease-free, maximum followup period being 19 months. Double-barrelled wet colostomy is a safe and simple technique with low morbidity. The patient needs to carry only one stoma and functional results are good.

Notes: Summary We have studied in cultured blood lymphocytes a familial translocation by banding with Giemsa staining, and have unequivocally identified the translocated chromosomes as Nos. 3 and 8, and besides we have established without doubt that the translocation has occurred between the short arm of chromosome No. 3 and the long arm of chromosome No. 8.

Notes: Summary Non-inducible mutants have been isolated which synthesize the three galactose enzymes with the basal rate both in the absence and in the presence of inducers. These mutations are closely linked to the lysA gene, as are the constitutive mutations in the regulator gene first described by Buttin (1963). The non-inducible mutants are Gal − on EMB gal plates. Revertants to the Gal + phenotpye are constitutive. Heterozygotes have been prepared at the locus of the regulator gene (galR), abd dominance studies involving the different alleles at this locus have been carried out. The non-inducible mutations are dominant over the wildtype, and this in turn is dominant over constitutive mutations in the galR gene. Starting from the non-inducible mutations, deletions have been isolated, which extend from the galR gene into the lysA gene. These are constitutive. The behavior of the non-inducible mutations and of the deletions are strong arguments for negative control of the galactose operon.

Notes: Abstract Eight insular and continental populations from the south-western range of Drosophila subobscura have been studied with regard to molecular and inversion polymorphisms. Heterogeneity between populations with respect to allele frequencies of 4 gene loci (Amy, Est-8, Est-9 and Pep-1) is the highest known for natural populations of the species. Moreover, the most common allele for these loci is not the same in all populations. Cladograms based on UPGMA clustering of the genetic distances based on allele frequency do not coincide with those constructed with inversion data. The allele-frequency differences between the populations may be due to non-random associations between enzyme alleles and gene arrangements and to founder effects appearing in the insular populations.

Notes: Abstract Genetic variation at 59 gene loci coding for enzymes (50) and larval proteins (9) has been studied in sympatric populations of Drosophila melanogaster and D. simulans from insular and continental origin. The average number of alleles per locus, the mean proportion of polymorphic loci and the mean heterozygosity are similar both within and between species. There are however some significant differences between D. simulans populations in the genotypic frequencies for four polymorphic loci.
