Notes: Summary An unusual case of Sjögren's syndrome presenting with severe anemia as the predominant clinical feature is described. Histological examination of a bone marrow biopsy specimen demonstrated that the patient's anemia was caused by myelitis and vasculitis of the small intraosseous vessels. Our report might stimulate a more thorough investigation of bone marrow in patients with connective tissue diseases and anemia.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Immunoglobulin (Ig) synthesis and secretion by peripheral blood lymphocytes activated by pokeweed mitogen (PWM), and by phytohemagglutinin (PHA) was measured in normal individuals and in subjects with primary immunodeficiency. Unstimulated cultures demonstrated stable, low Ig synthesis of all major Ig classes; PWM showed a peak of Ig synthesis at day 5; PHA cultures demonstrated a late peak of Ig production at day 9. Three cases of common variable immunodeficiency showed different patterns of data when the percentage of B cells in blood and Ig production in vitro were used as parameters. Two persons with immunodeficiency and thymoma showed decreased Ig production in vitro, and had suppressor cells capable of blocking Ig production by normal lymphocytes in co-cultivation experiments.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A modification of the Raji cell technique for the detection of circulating immune complexes is described. Raji lymphoid cells bind immune complexes via the C 3 receptor. Prior to incubation with the test serum it is necessary to block the IgG Fc receptor which would interfere with the assay. In the present modification the IgG Fc receptor is blocked with monoclonal IgG myeloma proteins thereby facilitating the detection of C 3 bound immune complexes with fluorescein-conjugated anti-light chain serum. This modification is presently used in a survey of immune complexes in a number of autoimmune diseases.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Using monospecific antisera against human liver specific protein (LSP) it could be demonstrated that Chang liver cells bear LSP on their membranes. Chang liver cells can therefore be used as in vitro system to study immune reactions against LSP in human inflammatory liver diseases.
