    The electrocardiographic and anticholinergic effects of trazodone and imipramine in man (1982)

    Notes: Summary The electrocardiographic and anticholinergic effects of trazodone (150 mg) and imipramine (75 mg) were investigated in 8 healthy volunteers. Both agents increased the QTc interval and decreased T wave height, but the effects occurred earlier with trazodone (from 30 min onwards) than with imipramine (150 and 180 min after dosing). Both drugs decreased heart rate, imipramine at 30 and 60 min and trazodone at 90 min. After 120 min, heart rate began to increase with imipramine an effect which was not seen with trazodone. Salivary volume was significantly decreased by imipramine at 120 and 180 min whereas trazodone did not influence salivary volume. Plasma levels of trazodone and imipramine were significantly related to the decrease in T wave amplitude. The increase in QTc interval correlated significantly with the plasma level of imipramine. These results suggest that trazodone, like the tricyclic antidepressants prolongs ventricular repolarization; but, in contrast to imipramine, it does not have anticholinergic activity.

    Potential of SeHCAT retention as an indicator of terminal ileal involvement in inflammatory bowel disease (1985)

    Notes: Abstract The absorption of 75Se-23-selena-25-homotaurocholate (SeHCAT) was compared with vitamin-B12 absorption and conventional radiography in 44 patients with inflammatory bowel disease. The retention of SeHCAT was normal in 11 patients with ulcerative colitis but was abnormally low in 9 patients with terminal-ileal resection, 9 out of 14 patients with small-bowel Crohn's disease and in 2 out of 10 patients with Crohn's colitis. The 5 patients with small-bowel Crohn's disease and normal retention had either inactive disease or no radiological evidence of terminalileal involvement. Measurements of the absorption of vitamin B12 did not discriminate between these groups, and there was very poor correlation between B12 and SeHCAT absorption (r=0.506, P〈0.05). There was extremely good correlation of SeHCAT retention measured using a whole-body counter with that measured using an uncollimated gamma camera (r=0.96, P〈0.001). The results suggest that SeHCAT retention may prove complementary to conventional methods of assessing small-bowel disease in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. As measurement by gamma camera is feasible, this test can be used in most departments of nuclear medicine.

    Notes: Abstract The ability of impedance plethysmography to measure changes in volume of the forearm in normal subjects is assessed by comparison with water-displacement plethysmography. The forearms were subjected to venous occlusion and simultaneous assessment of absolute volume changes of the same section of arm were made using the two techniques. The linear correlation between the two measurements had a coefficient of 0·93 but the impedance values were lower than those from water displacement by a factor of 0·41. These results are discussed by comparison with those from similar measurements described in the literature.
