    Notes: We demonstrate that multiwalled BxCyNz nanotubes can be efficiently converted to BN multiwalled nanotubes via an oxidation treatment. The microstructure and composition of the precursors and final products have been characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, electron energy-loss spectroscopy, and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. The conversion process is monitored by thermogravimetric analysis. Carbon layers of BxCyNz nanotubes start to oxidize at 550 °C, thereby transforming BxCyNz nanotubes into pure BN nanotubes. The remarkable thermal stability of pure BN nanotubes in an oxidizing environment is also established. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Aligned CNx (x〈0.1) nanotubes have been generated by pyrolyzing ferrocene/C60 mixtures at 1050 °C in an ammonia atmosphere. The structure and composition of the product were determined by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and high spatial resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy. The CNx tubes (15–70 nm diameter, 〈50 μm length) grown in large flakes (〈3 mm2) consist of a reduced number of "graphitic" layers (〈15 on either side) arranged in a bamboo-like structure. Areas of high nitrogen concentration were found within curved or corrugated "graphite-like" domains. The observation of a well-developed double peak in the σ* feature of the N K-edge suggests that the material has not undergone the transition to the fullerene-like phase known for nitrogenated carbons. Incorporation of nitrogen from the gas phase (NH3) into CNx nanotubes therefore leads to improved and more efficient N substitution into the network as compared to the synthesis with solid nitrogen-containing precursors reported earlier. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Herein we describe a pyrolysis route to the synthesis of gallium nitride (GaN) nanorods. GaN nanorods have been grown by the pyrolysis of gallium dimethylamide and ferrocene under an ammonia atmosphere. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive x-ray spectrometer show that they are GaN single crystals, the sizes of which vary from 3 to 30 μm in length and 15 to 70 nm in diameter. Iron acts as an important catalyst for the GaN nanorod growth. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A pyrolysis route has been used to synthesize arrays of highly aligned BxCyNz nanotubes in bulk. The structure and composition of the product were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and electron energy-loss spectroscopy. The length and diameter of the nanotubes are quite uniform in a large area of the reaction zone. The sizes of the aligned BxCyNz nanotubes from the whole reaction zone are 10–30 μm in length and 20–140 nm in diameter. The x/z ratio of BxCyNz nanotubes for most nanotubes is about 1:1. The x/y ratio of BxCyNz nanotubes is up to 0.6. Within one nanotube, the x/y ratio is usually heterogeneous. The growth mechanism is also discussed. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Summary Intensity forecasts of a hurricane are shown to be quite sensitive to the initial meso-convective scale precipitation distributions. These are included within the data assimilation using a physical initialization that was developed at Florida State University. We show a case study of a hurricane forecast where the inclusion of the ‘observed’ precipitation did provide reasonable intensity forecasts. Further experimentation with the inclusion or exclusion of individual meso-convective rainfall elements, around and over the storm, shows that the intensity forecasts were quite sensitive to these initial rainfall distributions. The exclusion of initial rain in the inner rain area of a hurricane leads to a much reduced intensity forecast, whereas that impact is less if the rainfall of an outer rain band was initially excluded. Intensity forecasts of hurricanes may be sensitive to a number of factors such as sea surface temperature anomalies, presence or absence of concentric eye walls, potential vorticity interactions in the upper troposphere and other environmental factors. This paper is a sequel to a recent study, Krishnamurti et al., 1997, on the prediction of hurricane OPAL of 1995 that was a category III storm over the Gulf of Mexico. In that study we showed successful forecasts of the storm intensity from the inclusion of observed rainfall distributions within physical initialization. In that paper we examined the issues of diabatic potential vorticity and the angular momentum in order to diagnose the storm intensity. All of the terms of the complete Ertel potential vorticity equation were evaluated and it was concluded that the diabatic contributions to the potential vorticity were quite important for the diagnosis of the storm's intensity. The present paper addresses some sensitivity issues related to the individual mesoconvective precipitating elements.
