Description / Table of Contents:
Notes:
The polymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) initiated by the system of 1,1,4,4-tetramethyl-2-tetrazene (TMT) and pyruvic acid (PA) was investigated in dimethylformamide (DMF). The TMT/PA system could polymerize AN more easily than TMT alone. The polymerization was confirmed to proceed by a radical mechanism. The rate of polymerization was proportional to [TMT]0,52, [PA]0,59, and [AN]1,63. The over-all energy of activation of the polymerization was found to be 7,7 kcal · mol-1 within the temperature range of 50 to 70,5°C. The reaction of TMT with PA in benzene gave products whose analysis corresponded to nitrogen, hydrogen, carbon dioxide, tetramethylhydrazine, and N,N-dimethylacetamide. From these results and from the data of the ESR measurement of the TMT/PA system, a possible initiation mechanism is proposed.
