Notes: Abstract The amphibian pupillary response is mediated by two mechanisms. One is restricted to the iris itself, the other involves the central nervous system. In the present study we investigated the dynamic of the pupillary response and separated the parts by experiments with lesions of the optic and oculomotor nerve. The pupillary response of urodeles is comparable to that in other vertebrates. Differences are observable in amplitude and time course. Furthermore there are no binocular summation or consensual reactions. The central control of the pupillary response increases amplitude and velocity of the pupillary response in sudden luminance changes, compared to the pure iris related reaction. The separation of central and peripheral pupillary reflex control was shown more quantitatively through the introduction of a theoretical model. The investigation of the dark response gives evidence that there is no dilatator pupillae in urodele amphibians, since comparison to results in anuran species show that this is not a general feature in amphibians.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Climatological water balance means the difference between precipitation and potential evapotranspiration at a given place. The potential evapotranspiration was calculated by means of the Penman formulae, however, the energy input (just net radiation with Penman) was parameterized by the formula set of Albrecht, the procedure is specified in [1]. In this paper — in addition to [1] — the mean yearly climatological water balance is broken down to the yearly amounts of water surplus and water deficit. The total of surplus contributes to an assessment of the water resources, while the sum of deficits points out climatological water famine which, if necessary, has to be gridged by means of surplus water stored earlier in the water year. In North America, data quantifying the climatological water balance are of special interest because a water shortage occurs in about all areas which are utilized agriculturally - and that nearly always during the main vegetation period.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The climatological water balance is comprehended as the difference between precipitation and potential evapotranspiration. The computation of the potential evapotranspiration was carried out after Penman [1, 2], the energy term of the Penman-formula was calculated, however, after Albrecht [3]. The map of the annual average of the climatological water balance (Fig. 1) demonstrates that the areas where the balance is negative — i. e. the arid regions — are much more extended compared with earlier representations of climates. Additionally the length of the humid period is given at the stations (Fig. 2) by which it is revealed that the humid climate remains limited to relatively small areas. The eastern parts of the continent to which hitherto a humid climate was attributed quite generally show an arid period of 6 to 7 months for large areas, and this space of time coincides with the main growth period.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The evaluation of three complex climatological parameters allows to demonstrate that the five large North American deserts have advanced, owing to desertification processes, and varying in expanse, from the areas of desert and semi-desert climates into their neighbouring regions with shrub-grassland and grassland climates. The parameters used are the ratios of the average annual amounts of the fluxes of sensible and latent heat (Bowen-ratio; range found: 1.3–9.5), of net radiation and the heat needed to evaporate precipitation (Budyko-ratio; range found: 2.3–10.4) and of precipitation and potential evapotranspiration (Transeau-ratio; range found: 0.05–0.32). For 23 stations, the amounts of the ratios mentioned are tabulated, together with the annual and the extreme monthly amounts of net radiation, the flux of sensible heat, the potential evapotranspiration, and the degree of aridity which is expressed as the difference between the respective amounts of potential evapotranspiration and precipitation. Except for the latter, all quantities were estimated from conventional climatological data by means of the semi-empirical formulae sets [1, 2, 3, 4].

Notes: In an extension of recent work [Y. Kim, K. Patton, J. Fleniken, and H. Meyer, Chem. Phys. Lett. 318, 522 (2000)], overtone pumping followed by resonantly enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) detection is used to record spectra corresponding to excitation of the lowest five bend–stretch vibrational levels of the NO(X 2Π,v=2)–Ar complex. High-quality ab initio potential energy surfaces, coupled-electron-pair (CEPA) and coupled cluster single double triple [CCSD(T)], are used to predict the positions of these same five states, but in the NO(X 2Π,v=0)–Ar complex. The vibrational wave functions and basis set expansion coefficients, determined within the adiabatic bender model, are then used to simulate the observed spectrum for excitation of the NO(X 2Π, v=2)–Ar complex. The overall position and rotational substructure matches the experiment extremely well, particularly when the simulation is based on the presumably more accurate CCSD(T) potential energy surfaces. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract: Tryptamine was degraded by incubation with rat brain homogenate to an unknown product. The reaction was stimulated by the nonionic detergents Triton X-100 and Lubrol PX and less by the zwitterionic detergent 3-[(3-cholamidopropyl)dimethylammonio] 1 -propanesulfonate (CHAPS). The same results were obtained with pig brain and bovine brain. The monoamine oxidase inhibitor pargyline inhibited the reaction strongly, indicating the partici pation of the enzyme on the reaction. Addition of 17,000 g supernatant from rat brain homogenate increased the for mation effectively whereas phospholipids or chloroform/methanol (7:3) extract from the 17,000 g supernatant showed only little or no effect. Chromatographic and electrophoretic properties as well as the chemical reaction of the product with specific reagents suggest that the compound consists of an indole part and an amino acid part. The product could be identified by fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry and by comparison with the synthetic substance (4R)-2-(3-indolylmethyl)-1,3-thiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid. It is formed by the enzymatic oxidation of tryptamine producing indole-3-acetaldehyde which sponta neously cyclizes with free l-cysteine from the tissue. The results suggest that the reaction of biogenic aldehydes with brain macromolecules may proceed via an analogous reaction.
