Summary Seen from the standpoint of art history, the profile is a specific compositional form. The various theories of proportion deal with problems regarding the geometric constitution of an artwork and do not refer directly to the subject depicted. The profile as a conventional compositional form could take on special significance, the context of which depended on the stylistic and formal vocabulary of the respective period. The profile promotes in general the effect of distance between the subject and the viewer, in most cases to enable the exaltation of the portrayed person (as an immortalization), yet also to facilitate criticism (portrait caricature as initiated by Leonardo). Starting in the Renaissance, artist emphasized more and more the study of profiles; these served as basic material for various other sciences (anthropology, criminology, biology, medicine). As an “experimental” composition, the profile appears today to be an especially “unnatural” form, not corresponding to the everyday customary fashion of looking at people. The following questions arise: What is the importance of the “geometry of beauty” for modern medicine? Is a patient in a sense a “living artwork”, the doctor a “creative artist”? In this lecture, these issues will be discussed and illustrated with examples showing their application in profiles throughout the history of art and also in the professional orthodontic literature.
